Very surprised our captain has come out and said this, despite missing finals by 2 goals last year

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2018/08/01/melbourne-skipper-jones-clarifies-'booze-ban'-claims/

We are never going to be a premiership team with our captain telling the boys itโ€™s ok to drink and undermining the professional guys like Oliver who are vowing to give it up during season.

He said that they agreed to not over do it, focus on recoveryย but it doesnโ€™t meanย banningย booze all together

This is very sensible when you think about it. ย

Jones said he enjoyed a couple of reds after Saturday nights game.

Not even possible to do, would only end up getting players off side, Matthew Lloyd said on footy classified he tried to bring it in at Essendon in his last year he said it was shut down pretty quick, as some of the young guys said to him your older with a family, we want an outlet so it doesnโ€™t suit every individual, I like that a few of our young guns are doing it shows commitment but I wonโ€™t worry if some are not keenย

Im furious and will write the club a stern handwritten letter first thing tomorrow once ive sobered up demanding an explanation

The minute you โ€œbanโ€ something is the minute you open up a whole host of opportunities for media and players to get themselves in trouble. All of a sudden a glass of wine is a big deal. A beer after a game is a sin.ย

I think itโ€™s great that the players are making sacrifices to be at their peak, but having a drink here and there is also ok if it doesnโ€™t affect a players recovery.ย

I think to try to inspire the boys and show solidarity all us supporters should give up booze till they win a flag...

Iโ€™d be interested to see a positive post from your good self Oli.

I heard this live, itwas a little surprising that it took till Wednesday to quash the rumour. Also said that he had a couple of beers after the game. Iโ€™d say Clarry has taken this upon himself which is still great to see.ย

You'll be interested for a while, Cards.ย  Won't happen.

It's a non story.ย  If beer or wine, in acceptable amounts, hindered recovery and performance to a large degree then clubs would ban it full stop.

Prohibition doesn't work. The title of the thread is misleading.Only the clubs leaders have made their decisions public at this stage.

I willย say this.

I have associated with Dermott Brereton more closely than is necessary for any decent human.

Two things he will tell you.

Not one Hawthorn premiership player drank in '87 or '88 for the whole season.

He got up after the hit against Geelong with a punctured lung and broken ribs to send out a message that he would not be beaten.

He is a great root.

Ok three.

Jones contradicted what Lewis has been poaching.

I know it is common for people to react to posts without reading the full link, but it seems this time the actual original poster starting the thread didn't read the article either. New record?

Far far too much information Biff.

Other than that I am speechless.

Post was read and itโ€™s a contradiction to the post earlier this week regarding Oliver and advice given to him from Lewis. Seems some muppets just want to agree with everything that comes out no matter how contradicting they are to one another

Itโ€™s personal choice for me. I have no probs with the boys having a few beers ? after a game.ย

But i would hope no one drinks again until after the next game.ย

That is not on

I know for a fact this bolded bit is not true Biffen.

But I'll take your word on the great root part

If the booze is banned thereโ€™s no need for the โ€˜Noโ€™ in the title. The no suggests there isnโ€™t a ban on the booze.ย

Did he tell you this prior to his alleged accident caused by a faulty dismountย while doing the no pants dance?

Thatโ€™s correct, it isnโ€™t banned as the title suggests.ย

Cant remember ever seeing another afl captain encouraging the drinking of alcohol

Is having a beer or two during the week against the law?ย  Does it hinder your recovery and preparation?ย ย

I would not have thought so Wiseblood. I can tell you from experience over the last decade and a half it sureย helps my recovery from the MFC.ย

Of course, itโ€™s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. Itโ€™s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologistย  Itโ€™s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now letโ€™s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmedย the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).ย

  • CASEY: Essendon

Caseyโ€™s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckmanโ€™s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demonsโ€™ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
