See Carlton have traded their State League compensation picket Geelong.  Means Geelong can pick up some 19yo kid from SA (has played 1 season of senior footy in the SANFL), and they (Carlton) are getting a pick in the National Draft in return.

I didn't read much about the compensation picks they and the Gold Coast got, and the conditions of those picks, but I'm sure Gil's intentions wouldn't have been for them to trade in to the National Draft with.

What's a bet this bloke turns out to be a star for Geelong, and Carlton manage to fluck up their ND pick?!  (That said, the AFL website was talking about the possibility of the pick being involved in the McGovern deal).

I bet they didn't expect this:

"...the AFL moved this week to advise Carlton that the cost of the charter flight to fly Dylan Shiel to Noosa had to be included in the soft cap or football department spend...even if it was a donation".

Ha!Ha! Small pennies but it is good to see the AFL take some action.

I wonder if Judy still holds his 'environmental ambassador' role for VISY?  Could be a vacancy open for Shiel should he arrive?

Hopefully they don’t use Carlton’s self valuation of the said charter flight ??!! Would the AFL have a barcode re jet charters to go by ?

Mathieson was there because he is a long-time, deep-pocketed Carlton tragic (who gifted them the majority of their poker machines)!

True, got me there.

However I’m quite bullish about Carlton’s list build. I expect them to go past at least half a dozen sides over the next 24 months. You can rise up pretty quickly with astute drafting/trading. Case in point - us!

I reckon under the right coach their spine has great potential, but their midfield is still bog ordinary aside from Cripps and Curnow. Dow might be okay but with SOS' record could well be a bust too.

Rorting the salary cap for Carlscum is part of their DNA, isn't it?

Was a story last week, teams can do this but the money has to come out of the clubs soft cap.

Blues received pick 42... deal makes no sense to me. Why would you not want to pick up a mature player that can be a bridge for a couple of years to allow the young players to grow.

Pick 42 (on its own, not part of greater deal) is a massive cr ap shoot.

Add Walsh and Shiel and natural progression of Dow, maybe a couple of big bodied mature journeymen to support Cripps and their midfield looks dramatically different inside 24 months.

I agree on their spine. Looking good.

What an insanely stupid trade from Carlton. Morons. Completely defeating the entire purpose of what that pick is meant to serve.

It was meant to be traded.

It's kind of the Clayton's second round pick. The priority given to the recipient clubs did not upset the other clubs with their various draft picks including for that matter the MFC.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
