Normally this is true and he's got a very accurate long kick, but boy there were some shanks on the weekend. Don't get me wrong he was fantastic for us, and he was a key part of our third term destruction of the dogs, but that one that came off the side of the boot and went out would've made Simon Godfrey himself blush!

Loving seeing Gus play great footy, gives me a warm fuzzy feeling every time I see him singing the song. He's done it the hard way, and boy he deserves it.

He deliberately pulled his kick because he looked up and saw Bulldogs all down the line. We were right behind it and saw what he saw. It was a deliberate skill error.

It would seem to be a fundamental skill of the game, and one that if mastered, gives a big advantage over opponents.

I have heard (don't know how true it is) that senior coaches tell their players DO NOT kick with your non-preferred. Play the percentages instead. A mediocre kick on your "right" foot is likely to be as good as or better than a good one on your "wrong" foot.

That would filter to junior ranks in a jiffy. "To prepare you better for AFL level, you are now banned from kicking on your non-preferred."

It would explain why we see so many awkward kicks under pressure. Not a good look. Another area where coaches are harming the game. Not sure what can be done about it though.

My grandson who plays under17's for werribee districts tells me that they practice on both sides kicking and handballing. he is also in the western jets Brad Johnson under 16's squad and they do the same there.

I remember in junior football with the good players that they would play a season on their non preferred foot in order to develop. Made a lot of sense.

I seem to recall one club, maybe even MFC, who in a full preseason session were instructed NOT to use their preferred foot. 

Certainly regularly practicing with the non preferred foot (and hand) fairly quickly improves the skills.

Yeah, ignore the tendency but I still dream each night of Robbie turning into traffic with the options  of left or right foot, for effect. Will there ever be another of his ilk?

Brayshaw is closing in on Oliver. His form is that good. He has sailed past every mid we have bar Oliver. Of course Clayton has the points on the board after putting in multiple seasons of quality, but Brayshaw is bordering on elite. I have been watching him closely and he has better traits than elite players, he moves better, is more aggressive, and is dominant physically (asserts himself on the contest). His kicking lets him down at times, but he used to be a good kick as a junior on both feet (so I would expect that will translate eventually). Whatever it takes to keep Brayshaw it is of most importance. On form he is our best midfielder after Oliver, and even then he is rapidly closing in. I have Brayshaw in my supercoach and have had for sometime, so I watch him more closely than others. I think even Dees fans are sleeping on the Brayshaw.

Back in my day you’d cop a flogging for not being able to kick on both feet. Then you’d have to walk 40 mile in the snow to get home.

If only we could keep Viney out there, a midfield of Gawn, Oliver, Viney and Brayshaw is A grade if they can improve on their two-way defensive running.

On the afl exchange podcast he said he was confident on getting the deal done and that his preference was to stay at Melbourne. Raises a little bit of doubt rather than the when, not if...

Just wanted to send some brayshaw love. Thought he was really important last night. Mightve been a coincidence but when he went off with the knock the hawks were all over us. He comes on gets that scrappy kick to set melksham up. 

Reviving this thread... Seems out of favour with playing in the guts, with even Jones preferred to him. Was really ineffective today... Poor game or something more?

He looked like he had a hangover. Perhaps he’s been out with Steven May?
