How about we let him string half a dozen games in a row ?

I don't think anyone is debating that. I have not seen one poster say that he be dropped. DeeSpencer is just making some extremely valid observations on what he has delivered so far and what appear to be some serious limitations that will stop him from being a good AFL player.

In his grand total of one game after his preseason ?

Let's wait a while before we start dissecting his attributes.

ProDee, I just want to say thank you for being an oasis of reason in these dark times.

Sure but he has to play somewhere and contribute otherwise it may as well be back to Casey.

Here is my handling of out contract players/ rumours of comings and goings.

Every player on our list is a Melbourne player right  up until the time they are not.

(this keeps my head from exploding - you're welcome)

It takes two to tango. A player may want to stay but what will be the club's attitude regarding contract negotiations. And what will be Brayshaw's attitude if the club puts a limit on its offer and does not match other offers?

Angus has shown enough to prove he has what it takes, but has not had enough game time to determine his worth in terms of future contract negotiations.

As others have pointed out, the big unknown is the impact his past concussion issues and the possibility of future concussion issues may have on his health and footy future.

Great response Gus.  Can't wait to see what you can do with a run of games under your belt

Interesting few weeks coming up for Angus that could easily shape his football future Ernest. This time last year JW thought he was a MFC player forever!

Not really his choice in the end though. If the club decides they are better off exploring a trade.......,.. well look at what happened to Jack Watts. He said practically the same thing but still ended up somewhere else.

I personally dont want to see him traded. Kid has some great attributes and could be an excellent player with a solid run of games, and confidence in himself. Hard at the ball and opposition player too, which is something that cant really be taught.

Hang onto Angus and we will be rewarded. (IMO)

Obvious to say, but Guss’s concussions from last year have set his development back significantly.

Not only has he had limited continuity in playing games at AFL level, but we haven’t even seen him play those games in his most natural and best position, which is starting in the square.

He was drafted to this club as a hard nosed, big bodied inside mid with a few other strong attributes including contested marking and an ability to kick both sides which gives him some positional flexibility.

The club were rightly cautious last year when bringing him back into the side with a different role, but it’s definitely not where I want him going forward.

As others have already noted, I think a contributing factor to our break down during games through the middle is due to the fact that we have so many personnel rotating through that midfield mix. It’s a double edged sword if I’ve ever seen one. Whilst it’s great to have some flexibility and options for different setups, it also takes away any sort of continuity and chemistry we could be building with a smaller and more concentrated group of mids.

I have no concerns over Gus as long as he remains uninjured going forward. But really, once Lewis and Jonesy move on, we should be playing a consistent group of inside mids that play 80% + midfield time that include Viney, Oliver, Brayshaw, Salem and Petracca. Trac obviously playing more of a Dusty balance of mid/forward time due to his one-on-one dominance.

I hate Tyson on a wing and I hate the fact that’s Goody continues to play far too many numbers through that part of the ground who don’t contribute enough.

Our next step is to find some speed and power runners for the wings so we don’t have to continually play inside, one-sided and one-paced mids like Tyson on the outside.

Clearly I’m on a rant and have entirely lost track of this thread but [censored] me can we please start playing blokes on positions they’re suited to.

this kid does really not look like a pick 2, getting slaughtered by dan butler a guy picked in the 50s

He played alright against the tigers. Keep playing him.

Are you kidding?

He was awful. Took a courageous mark in the 3rd but nearly everything else he did resulted in a turnover. Even the holding the ball free kick he got, his initial contest and inability to kill the ball was poor.

His positioning as a back man was shocking and his opponents were constantly goal side of him.

We don't have anyone to replace him with so I guess he can stay for now.

Improved somewhat as the game went on, but not a great night for him.  Is at his best when he hunts the ball, rather than sitting back off the play.  Needs to move to a wing/on-ball to make better is of his skillset.  Is coming from a long way back due to injuries, but is also being played out of position.

i still don't rate him but his third quarter was what i expect of him

unfortunately the other three quarters were diabolical

he's no better than toumpas with his skills, and he's slower than trengove

whatever we get for him at the end of the year will be a win

Would it actually hurt to play him in his natural position.

I assume you are all posting from home - he was really strong tonight, ran into right positions, ran hard, especially in the 4th when the game was over he was one of the few who kept running.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
