Well I'm looking forward to AFLX (Seriously)

The Anti-Congestion Football League?

Peering into my crystal ball this is what I foresee ...

• The games will be open,  fast,  free-flowing affairs with players able to run and bounce the ball.
• There will be almost zero congestion which will make the game far easier to officiate.  If you do like congested footy,  you may not like this version of the sport.
• Long kicks will be in vogue - but often for the receiving players to run on to.  The 10 pointer also encourages long kicks. 
• The wings (just like it used to be in Soccer/Aussie Rules) will be utilised by actual wingmen. 
• The high-marking forward could return and we will see numerous 1 on 1 contests.
• Numbers at the contest,  create a stoppage/win the stoppage won't be happening either. 
• The games will be exciting and will remind viewers and spectators of how our once great game used to be played - there will be comments along the lines of ... "Why can't we see this sort of footy when the real stuff happens" (again,  think of all the congestion we now have to put up with) 
• Because the games have been cleverly designed for a rectangular field,  it gives a great chance for the sport to be grown overseas. 

I reckon it's a great initiative - nothing ventured, nothing gained.  I've been at the league to fix the real stuff so that it's at least watchable again but this initiative will at least give us a glimpse of what can be.  It fits my narrative. 

If it works and becomes really popular,  the sky is the limit.  Both in America & in Europe there are hundreds of large capacity stadiums with rectangular fields.  In fact,  this version of footy can be taken anywhere in the world (if it works)

As a means to an end,  this version of the sport may help fix the issues that I see in the main version of the sport ... that's how I will be viewing the exercise.

That's the only reason they're doing it, in some vain attempt to export the game. They should stick to consolidating the northern states before thinking about expanding into Asia. The other reason I think is to have a summer comp to help them in their desire for year round media coverage.

I get what you're saying about the style of play but that could also be achieved playing on a normal oval with say 12 a side. Whatever this game is, it's not footy. It's not even a modified version, it's a completely bastardised version. Hit and giggle? Yeah sure whatever if they wanna do it in preseason knock yourselves out. But try and implement these changes in the season proper and people will turn away in droves.

Well,  a lot will tune in and have a good look Gonzo ... there's very little sport on that weekend so the target audience could be quite high.  The under 35's is where I think a bit of the support will come from (at least initially)

People shouldn't read into my comments as being pro AFLX ... my main interest surrounds what comes of it and whether we're able to see  a number of the attributes of the sport that are no longer always visible during the normal season proper. 

As always,  I have an open mind on anything new and will allow my mind to be made up on what I witness.  The cynics will see playing on a rectangular field as a bit of a gimmick but if the sport was ever going to be at all popular overseas then this form of the game is probably the only way.  @bandicoot said as much earlier in the thread. 

I'm probably going to go along on the night.  At worst it will probably be a fun night with loads of action. 

Agreed with others who say they are looking for this game to be easy to spread overseas. The preferred dimensions are exactly that of the recommended soccer pitch dimensions... They should give this a go at AAMI Park so people feel much closer to the action. At least I hope they bring the seats in at Etihad.

I reckon we would unleash someone like Hunt and just tell him to outrun everyone else and kick goals...

Anyone know whether it’ll be on the “Watch AFL global pass”?  ..or anywhere else it could be seen from Los Angeles?   I’m just curious to see it.  Thanks.

Strangely enough I think it could be a success amongst the millennials. They seem to have a different view of entertainment.

I wonder if there will be betting allowed. Can see it being an afternoon of strange wagering.

The ground configuration is another point. Maybe good for rectangular stadiums but they are playing the games at oval stadiums which makes the action a long way from the stands.

I went to a soccer game at the rectangular stadium near Olympic park. It was great from a viewing aspect. By contrast I went to a big international at the MCG and the players were miles away not to mention all the dug outs etc that obscured the view.

By the way has anything been mentioned about TV coverage?

Just got an email from watch AFL and they are spruiking the AFLX as part of the package.

Would love to see some subscriber numbers on watch afl.... suspect they are relatively low. Might improve if the stream were HD quality but that looks like a long way in the future.

It's on one of the channel 7 digital stations (free-to-air)  That's what I read anyway. 

I reckon the biggest barrier for a lot of people is the rectangular field (sight unseen of course)  We are so used to footy on the large ovals that it's hard for people to imagine Aussie Rules played on the dimensions used for Soccer,  League,  Union & American Football.  Equally,  we'd find it hard to imagine any of those sports being played on a large oval. 

But the rules applied coupled with so few players on the ground accommodate the change in dimensions. 

7 a side might be 1 or 2 players a side too few as well.  I'm envisaging a lot of open play with loads & loads of space.  We'll probably see the speedsters just take off and head for goal.  This version of the sport is probably all about attacking play.  Down the track this version may need some more defensive aspects. 

I could be way off beam too ... but I am fascinated to see what comes of it.  Imagine trying to coach it?

Hunt and Milkshake are far too good to be risking in this otherwise looks like the players we should be using.
