Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I read yesterday that Port traded Lobbe to Carlton for pick 95 in a bid to free up some salary cap space. If that's the case why are we paying any part of Watts salary. If he was on 500k as some suggest  it looks as though Port played us nicely.

Still think we should of chased Rockliff and if we landed him we could of retired Vince.

And can I now assume that no player has any excuses going into next season. People constantly brought up Watts incomplete game, well he wasn't alone.

So we trade out Watts because of his standards, then force Vince, renowned for his standards and relationships at the club, into retirement, and bring in Rockcliff, a guy who before this year was a renowned locker room cancer.

Makes sense.

Port had a great trade period, but they've brought in three guys who, despite all being extremely talented, are known for inconsistency. I think it's questionable that Port are now in flag contention.

Meh. Paid overs for Lever, didn't get enough for Watts and redeemed themselves with Balic.

Another who fails to recognise the obvious talent and value of an opposition player, but happily overvalues one of our own.

Wrapped we got Jake. He's a TEN year player for us and will definately be the general down back soon enough.

Balic juries out on. A lot of industry types seem to rate him.

Watts had his chances adn whether we like it or not the FD is setting a clear message about effort.

So you would have been ok if we got pick 95 for Watts, if Port paid all of his salary? You can't have it both ways with a contracted player that you are looking to move on.

It is what it is, achieved the targets so I'm ok with it. Time will tell anyway. So, where to now with the draft? Will we focus on midfielders or rucks? I personally believe we need both, but I'd be happy with a mature ruck and junior outside mid to develop. Thoughts?

We got market value for Watts and paid market value for a bloke who was almost an All Australian at 21.  I don't understand why people can't see this.

We also paid less than what Fremantle initially wanted for Balic.

(But heh, ignore what doesn't confirm the narrative.)

I would have said a first round and a second round.

Would you trade pick 1 for pick 10 and a future second with a team expected to play finals, i.e. pick 10 and a pick in the teens?

But thats what the deal basically was allowing for the picks coming back.

Think the best thing we did was spread it over two drafts - next year never comes - we can easily trade back into 2018 first round when that trade period arrives.

We got Lever for minimal impact on this years list.

Another one for the dummies.

Melbourne Demons

In: Jake Lever, Harley Balic, pick 31, pick 36, Adelaide’s 2018 third-round pick.

Out: Jack Watts, pick 10, pick 66, Melbourne’s 2018 first-round pick, Melbourne’s 2018 fourth-round pick.

Melbourne paid a lot to recruit Jake Lever but he will prove to be worth every penny – there’s no other player his age who is anything like him, and the Demons will find themselves a with a unique, elite player in their backline for ten years to come.

Harley Balic I like too and he came cheap. No complaints.

Unlike most I am guessing, I reckon trading out Jack Watts was a good call. He’s been little other than a headache for near on ten years and there’s a point where it’s just not worth the effort anymore.

Melbourne will have a quiet few years at the draft table but have assembled more than enough talent to take them to the pointy end of the ladder over the next decade.

The Crowd’s grade: B (52 per cent)
My grade: A

Interesting list of nervous & potentially soon to be uncontracted players.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/hartung-heads-hawks-facing-nervous-wait-20171020-gz5b4h.html

Just in case it needs further mention, there are some high draft picks here soon to discover if they're in the AFL scrapheap (o'rourke, hartung , lennon) .. illustrates (again) how much it is a lottery going to the draft.

I think you've got to look at the fact that we've essentially brought Lever for the rest of his career. Players who are traded will very rarely ask for a trade again so essentially we have Lever until he retires. He's 21 now and could play over 10 years easily.

Carlton traded even more for Gibbs who they'll have for 4 years max.

I'll take our side of the trade every day of the week.

I'm happy with the trade period. On the face of it we over paid for Lever and got unders for Watts. But Lever is a gun. Number one intercept player in the league and only 21yo. Can understand crows wanting a lot for him. You can talk about stringing things out and walking players to the draft but we just want to get deals done. Our list is young and right in the frame for finals and even a Premiership push. Bringing in a quality 21yo works.
Watts I would have hoped for more. But the club wanted him out and Port couldn't really give anything higher. Realistically we wouldn't have got much more than 25ish.
Balic for nothing. Can't go wrong.

The Roar is in error. We also handed in over pick 10..noted later but shows imbalance. Just an oversight eh

i like the idea of having Lever. Gave the farm needlessly. Hope it's worth it.

Balic is irrelevant. Watts still on wrong side of ledger.

MFC not that clever after all. Shame

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
