Forget about giving a first rounder for Gaff - here is the "moneyball" hard-running wingman we so desparately need.

Elite-running,  15km per game, 31 year old midfielder who is in limbo at North and without a contract for next year as they look to go with youth.

Extremely durable - played every game of the season 5 years in a row.  North have been a top 4/top 8 side in that time.

A late-comer to AFL only debuting in 2012.

Finished equal 6th in North's B&F this year with Ziebell. 3rd in 2016 in a top 8 side.

In 2017 he averaged 22 possessions, 4 marks and 3 tackles a game.

2nd Best Inside-50 kick in the comp in 2016 according to Champion Data.  3rd in the comp for Distance covered in Defence for 2017.

Would suit us absolutely perfectly for a 2 year contract.

6th this year in Norths BnF..sign him up!

So you wouldn't take Jack Ziebell who also finished equal 6th?

Hasn't missed a game in 5 years since debuting in 2012.  Certainly doesn't have the body of a 31 year old.

He sounds good, I don't know anything about Sam Gibson, but those stats at least are pretty high.

Maybe the club can work it out with Gaff, for him to stay with Eagles til next year. for free agency?

Without having seen a lot of him you make a good case. What are his foot skills like?

As an aside have you thought about a name change should Watts leave MFC alsi

Nah I like it.  He would definitely be top 22 for us. He runs very hard both ways, he can even tag if we need. We'd get him for cheap and he will make our team better. Very much a 'moneyball' selection and I like it. Good post

You must be kidding! My son is an avid Kangas supporter (I have learnt to live with this) and he rates Gibson as the AFL's biggest ball butcher. Superbly fit and gets the ball but never hits a target. I watch my son go nuts at Foxtel the number of times Gibson turns the ball over. Definitely not.

Ball butcher who has endurance but no pace.

If we are playing slower hard running options on the wing we are better off with Lewis - who barely tries defensively but can rack them up and hit a target going forward and Tyson who is no worse than Gibson on a wing.

To be honest I'd take a hard running ball butcher with pace - seems to work for Scully and Kamdyn McIntosh, but not a one pacer.

Haha you blokes are savage!

I'm not saying he's a great kick, but he's no butcher.

2nd best kick in the comp last year for Inside 50's, fractionally behind Ablett.  A butcher doesn't do that.

44 Clangers from 22 games this year.

Better than some of the blokes we had sitting on the wing like Lewis and Tyson.  Lewis had 68 clangers from 19 games and Tyson had  81 clangers from 19 games.

Anyway, I'm not proposing Gibson for his kicking skills, but he plays a role we don't have and he costs nothing.  Sure I'd prefer Gaff but he costs a lot more.  Gibson provides an option all day up and down a wing, and is an elite defensive runner which would help with our one-paced inside midfielders who the opposition walk away from.  The guys we had on the wing this year (Vince, Lewis, Tyson, Harmes, Hannan, Salem etc) are not wingers.

If the club thinks Stretch is ready to step up and cement his spot, great, but I think the jury is out and Gibson would be a terrific stop-gap, free option.

Geez, to think Dees supporters are harsh on Bernies disposal, imagine if we had Ziebells horrible hack kicks he goes with 100% of the time. Terrible footballer

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
