Chris Scott had no answer to the crows slick ball movement and run last night and lost the contest in the middle not playing Danger there from the start.  What a blight on his coaching to have no B game to close down the Crows, get up on the mark and in their faces and play slow possession footy to try and shut their run down.  Playing man on man for a decent time might have helped also but no, stuck with that putred zone D pretty much all night.

I see us as having similar issues to the Cats in terms of our ability (or otherwise) to play slow possession footy and man on man for long periods of time when needed if the opp gets a run on.

If we cant master these abilities next year we will all be on here again wondering what the [censored] happened to yet another season,  where everything looked like and a shouldve been...finals!

This has been the most boring finals series I have ever watched. Lets hope that at least one more game ( out of 2 ) is a good contest.

Agreed.  In these finals hardly any team has played a 'zone defence'. 

Sydney, Richmond and Adelaide have almost exclusively played 'man on man' when defending and kicking to position to control the ball when attacking.  None of them have leaked goals 'out the back'.  It is also how Hawthorn won 3 flags in a row.

Like you RN, I worry about our game plan which relies on zone defence, manic running at all costs and happy hand balling. 

I am hoping our game plan quickly becomes more conventional - perhaps a bit more of the Paul Roos style of 'defence first', if we want to progress deep into September.  It will be easier to maintain control and composure than our manic running style that has a higher risk of turnovers.

Yet during the regular season there were more close games than I can recall in a season previously.

If we continue to over use the ball with our poor skill, we will not get consistent good performances.

That is why we are looking at guys like Lever and why I am surprised people on DL want to move out our two best ball users. We need more skillful ball use and some extra pace.

Control is the key word LH!  I understand neauvous coaching methods prefer not to play man on man 24/7 and why but when the going gets tough you must be able to switch to man on man 'manic / in your face' pressure as part of your repertoire and be able to bring in until you regain some control and respect on the scoreboard and get back in the game.

The manic overlap style Geelong used to play (and are still trying to most of the time under Scott) is ok if you have a dominant mid field and silky skilful players sprinkled around the park and can close down your opponent on the counter.  But they're a shadow of that former self now obviously.

Richmond appear to have turned their season around through manic pressure up forward with the inclusion of more smalls and slightly less manic running/handball as you say / more control of the footy by foot, with some extra periods of slow play / possession footy at times when they feel it's necessary, especially vs recent times.

So many times we are reminded of the turnovers by our players and see3mingly intimated that thew McDonalds,Tyson,Salem, Viney etc etc are the worst in the AFL.

Last night I counted 4 distinct occasions that Toohey turned the ball over with poor kicking and yet he is lauded as a very good disposer.

Furthermore the handballs and kicks  that were intercepted by Crows BECAUSE THE DISPOSAL DID NOT HIT THE MARK  lead to their scoring 18.5 from Turnovers

I think that shows that the McDonalds are not the greatest butchers of the ball like some posters think. ( I also assume that Watts was not playing so could not be blamed for Geelongs loss plus it makes you appreciate the value of people who dispose of the ball well and should not be moved on willy nilly )

The temperature is expected to be 25 when today's game starts and about 20 when it ends. 

This will have to favour the Giants who live in and train in warmish conditions a lot of the time. 

With their manic tackling style and the heat I would expect the Tiges to tire late in quarters and in the 4th. 

If so Giants will win!

I wonder if a combination of the trying conditions today, and the extra day break for the Crows means that whoever wins today will struggle to keep up next week.

GWS today, please:

1) In quality (definitely!), if not (quite) in quantity, the Tiges' drought is deliciously worse than ours. Must be preserved!

2) The sooner GWS get their 'inevitable' premiership, the sooner they're into whatever it was befell the Doggies this year.

3) For no particular reason, just general 'meh' (and possibly that 0.5%), I feel the AFL's 2017 (AFLW excepted) warrants an all-non-Vic GF

So much to like in this post but especially the comments about the Richmond game. We had them on the ropes, hit by injuries in the first half and it still took them until 20 minutes into the final term to lead us. Really would like to see them brought undone today. Oh let it be so!

My Richmond supporting neighbour who is fat balding and middle aged is seen getting into his car with a couple like minded folk dressed in brand new Richmond jumpers. It is one of the saddesr and horrerfying  sights that the human eye can try and cope with.

the commentary last night was much more enjoyable when they finally realised Geelong couldn't win.

Their attempts in the third quarter to talk up the game were excruciating. Not sure why we need the constant spruiking. Viewers aren't that dumb...are they?
