harsh but almost true

I had hoped some other team would take on 300k of Tom's contract but you could be right.

We were dumb enough to take KK so you never know.

There probably is a number that someone tries him for but if we're paying him 400-500k a year to play against us we may as well just pay him the full whack to be with us.

Essendon? Dees? Bulldogs? Pies? Hawks?

Essendon probably got the most $ to throw esp with Saad/Danniher on the way out.

This.

You'd think they'd be on the phone to Brown's management right now and throwing the sink at him with the freed up money they now have.

their sole remaining key forward is james stewart

if they don't get brown now then dodo is not doing his job properly

alternatively i guess they could throw everything at jeremy cameron? means no compo for joe tho

ha! suffice to say there's no interest in t mac in the annual player meat market

Brown has a knee injury s so we are no wiser about its severity and how it affects his main assets:  running speed or leap.

At 28 they both have only a few years left and are injury risks.  Tbh, I would prefer others.

But can we get others?

The problem with brown imo is that he benifits from lace out passes inside 50. That's Melbourne's issue. Our current forwards will thrive if they are receiving passes on the lead inside 50 but we can't deliver. Better to fix that with outside run and kicking and watch our forwards thrive.

I agree - whilst there’s no doubt Brown is a bonafide forward, he leads on tracks, meaning that the ball into 50 needs to be good. What we need (and I don’t think there’s any out there at the moment) is a big clunker! I would rather get Petty right - who can clunk - and try and get TMac back, who is a good lead.

They could go for Hogan. Will come cheap. That will ensure their dramas will continue for a few more years.

Lol - Jeremy Cameron - preliminary talks would have been him hanging up the phone on them.  Ben Brown will end up there on a massively overs contract

The only card the Bombers can play with Cameron is cash.  With Daniher, Saad etc all leaving, they'll have plenty of money to throw around.  That would be the only reason he would go there.

It looks as though it will be a 'cash off' between Norf and the Peptides to see who can miss out on the most players this off season.

Who on earth would want to go to Essendon with the problems they are having at the moment? Brown would be mad to go there even if the money is good they are just another North.Melbourne.

As Wiseblood says above - paying obscene cash might do it. Shiel and Devon Smith would be able to give him the lowdown on the place.

Cameron would be crazy to go to Essendon, even for a whole lotta money.

And if he does, no worries, see you in douches JC.

Cal Twomey on AFL's footy feed today reporting that Melbourne are very very interested in Ben Brown. For what it's worth, Cal's word around these sorts of things is very reliable so I'd expect a high level of truth in that. Would imagine some stronger links may be made once our salary cap is roughly determined for next year after the new club soft cap, list sizes and further delisitings and salary dumps of ANB/Oscar are announced and done. Would be good to have an in principle deal done soon with Brown to ensure he wants to come.

While I don't usually like pointing towards this guy, but Damian Barret has alluded to Melbourne's interest in Brown in his last 2 "Sliding Doors" releases, if you could call them that. I'm sure he and Cal would have similar information.

Not really what he said mate. Just said we're keeping an eye on the situation.

Didn't say we were 'very very interested ' but more so that we are keeping a close eye on his movements. I see that as we need to rely on a few things to fall our way such as McDonald being traded for a 2nd rounder and Preuss as well.

Being interested and keeping a close eye on are the exact same thing at the end of the day. Agree that currently we're not in a position to make any conceivable move yet but is at least good to know the club is at least trying to improve our list beyond the odd older free agent or two. Have to be in it to win it at the end of the day and has got to count for something if multiple sources have said we're considering the move.

Sounds like Tom.McDonald is going to bite us on the [censored] we need to move him on but possibly can't.

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
