ON THE ROAD AGAIN by Whispering Jack

I like the fact that Melbourne is still standing four months into a season that has been so badly interrupted by injuries, illness, suspensions and some of the disappointing early losses that occurred at least partly as a result of the disruption that these things brought with them. The Demons are still standing particularly because in recent weeks they have found ways to win close games that tested their nerve and their depth which is one of the ingredients needed for them to become a great side.

I'm not suggesting the club is anywhere near such lofty heights right now but if it wants to aspire to the level of greatness in this sport at any time soon then what happens over the next four weeks will be a guide as to how far this team can possibly go.

This Saturday night the Demons face the Crows in Darwin, then it's Port Adelaide at the MCG, North Melbourne at Blundstone Arena, Hobart and the GWS Giants in the national capital. Three road trips is an enormous task in light of the fact that the co-captains Nathan Jones and Jack Viney might miss all of those games and other key midfielders like Christian Salem, Angus Brayshaw and possibly even Dom Tyson are likely to miss some, if not all of them. And that's not to mention Jack Watts whose lingering hamstring strain continues to place a question mark on the timing of his return.

But let's go back and do what all good football people do and that is take things one game at a time, starting with the last one - that very lucky victory over Carlton. A narrow win over a 16th placed side, albeit by an undermanned team, is not particularly inspiring even allowing for the Blues' wins this year against the two Sydney teams and their recent close encounter with the Crows. Surprisingly, the Blues had the edge in both age and experience (games played +259) and with three of last year's top four best and fairest winners out (and the other underdone after coming back from a long injury break), the Demons belied their favoritism going into the game.

Most good sides would have beaten Melbourne last Sunday. This week's opponent Adelaide is a very, very good one and a hard one to beat when you're without most of your best midfielders. Jones, Viney and Salem all starred when the Dees beat the Crows in Adelaide two months ago so it's going to be a tough ask expecting them to repeat the dose with another six day break and a trip to the hellishly hot and humid Top End. The forecast for Saturday is a maximum of 33 degrees. By nightfall, it will only be a few degrees cooler.

The circumstances of the game will no doubt weigh heavily on the minds of the selectors who know that the team will also need to be refreshed for the week following when they take on Port Adelaide in another vital match up. But now I'm getting ahead of myself and ignoring my message about taking things a week at a time.

On that score, the club has to take great credit for quickly defusing the matter between Clayton Oliver and that goading Blues fan by getting the Demon youngster to apologise for his behaviour. I like to call it the "Clayton's Apology". Oliver has been in great form despite the ribbing he and others have been getting from the media and opposition supporters which demonstrates that the club has finally shaken off the "loser" tag. 

I will be back after team selection to look at whether the Demons can take it one step further to upset the ladder leaders on the road in Darwin.

The Demons stunned the Crows and the football world when they turned a 28 point deficit at the 18 minute mark of the second term into a 41 point victory. The turnaround came about thanks to the dominance of midfielders and co-captains Nathan Jones (25 disposals) and Jack Viney (30 touches) and emerging star Christian Salem (31 disposals), none of who will be out on the field on Saturday night. Michael Hibberd (34 possessions) was superb in defence while Bernie Vince, playing against his old club, celebrated his 200th AFL game by closing down the dangerous Rory Sloane.

Once it was clear that they were not ready and that Dom Tyson and Jack Watts were therefore not going to make the trip to Darwin, the team selection for the Adelaide Crows game was fairly predictable. Jay Kennedy-Harris received  another chance to revive his career at the expense of Billy Stretch who has been disappointing of late. Kennedy-Harris' form at VFL level has been outstanding since he was dropped earlier in the season and he might well have been welcomed back a fortnight ago but for that well-documented drinking incident with a few of the boys after a recent Casey victory. His selection makes sense for a game in muggy heat and under lights that calls for smaller players with pace rather than the bigger types.

However, the story is not all about the diminutive Demon youngster who showed promise in his debut season but has been severely curtailed by injuries ever since.

The selectors would have dearly loved the option of bringing in more fit players for the team's fourth six-day break (and second interstate) game in five weeks but the cupboard was decidedly bare as a result of having those midfielders in the infirmary recovering from the ailments of recent rounds. Compounding matters is the fact that the Casey Demons had only three players in their last game who have played at AFL level this year and none of them fits the requirements in terms of their size.

Simon Goodwin is however, extremely confident that the next tier of mids can step up to the plate:

"We train all our players up to play a certain way, so it really isn't personnel based. Clearly we've got some really good midfielders out of the team. 

"But that's provided a great opportunity for guys like (Christian) Petracca, Mitch Hannan and James Harmes to come into the midfield and … last week (they) were very good in that area."

Much the same could be said of the team when they met the Crows at Adelaide Oval in round eight and recorded their best win of the season. They did so without Max Gawn and Jesse Hogan but others stood up in their absence. This is exactly what Goodwin is asking for on Saturday night.

The two teams are first and second for contested possessions so that battle will be crucial. If the Demons can contain the likes of dangerous forwards, Eddie Betts, Josh Jenkins and Tex Walker who are the Crows' heaviest goalkickers, then half the job will be done.

I can't be entirely convinced that this will happen and that Melbourne will kick enough goals on the night so I'm going to sit on the fence and tip a draw.

    Its a toss up who will come back into the side.

    In one report by Misson he says Tyson is a better chance to play than Watts, and Watts is more like 2 weeks away.

    Then in the run down they will both be tested this week.

    Was one report written to confuse us or the Crow eaters.

    I think Adelaide are pretenders and very beatable but we're missing the key components we need to beat them. No Jones, Tyson AND Viney is huge. Hoping Tyson comes back, may increase odds a bit but not much. Watts is a must in but seems unlikely. Wouldn't be surprised or that angry if we drop this one. We need to two of the games against Port, Saints and GWS, tho.

    7 News has been told privately that @adelaide_fc believe Melbourne is the best team they have played this season.

    Well lets hope the winning ways continue.

    If we stick to the gameplan, as we've done really well for most of the year, then there's no reason why we can't win this game of footy, even with some key players missing.  Tyson and Watts coming back into the side would be a huge bonus, but I feel as though both will miss one more week and play against Port next week at the G.

    My one concern is their forward line, even though we had them well and truly covered last time around.  Walker is in good form and Jenkins is the king of slipping out the back for easy goals.  McGovern is also dangerous as a third tall.  If we can curb them enough then we go along way to winning the game.

    We seem to match up well on them, thought we were unlucky not to beat them at the G late last year and this year speaks for itself.

    Perhaps BT is an example to help answer the questions around the long-term effects of multiple concussions.

    Last week like many prior weeks the opp defenders more often than not, marked high balls coming into our forward line.  That is a tailor made chance for Lever to be BOG.  Why opp coaches allow him to roam free is beyond me.

    In round 8 he did not play!!  This week if we can't neutralise his free roaming intercepts it will be very hard to win.  In a different way, he is to Adel what JJ was to the bulldogs - the guy from whom their respective attacks starts. 

    Have given a bit of thought on How To Stop Lever.  This will sound odd and a luxury but what if we play Tom Mc on him with a brief to wear him like a glove and take him out to far flung pockets or at least to the pocket on the opposite side of our attacking forays.   Lever has to go with him as Tom is a dangerous forward.  It sacrifices Tom's game but also takes Lever out of play and allows Hogan, Pedo/Watts etc to kick the goals. 

    Other suggestions on How To Stop Lever?

    How about move the ball into the foward line properly, find targets and not bomb it?

    For a few weeks there our delivery into the forward line was first class.  That said, I don't think we will have the cattle to suffiently dominate the play through the mid feild to pull that off this week.

    They key will be moving it quickly and not allowing them to lock it into their forward line.  The moment we allow them to do that is the moment we allow Lever to zone off and pick up easy marks all night long.  As long as we have enough at the contest then we should be fine.  He isn't going to out muscle Hogan, T Mac or Pedersen.

    Yes, ideally, we find targets up forward but in practice we don't have the composure yet and with Salem and Watts (maybe) out we don't have the skill for pin point passes. 

    And if as you say we can't dominate the midfield how do we stop Lever?

    BT is a commentator for the neutral fan with nothing invested in the outcome of the game. I can't stomach him when so much is at stake like the last two weeks. He makes you want to throw things at the tellie.

    I actually think we are very good at moving the ball quickly out of opp forward line.  Where we fall down is lack of skill and composure in delivery to forwards so it often goes in high especially in recent weeks without Salem, Watts, Jones, Viney.  Its easy to say not do this but that is how it has been in recent weeks - perfect for Lever.

    If we let them lock it in their forward line Lever will have a very relaxed night in their backline rather than 'zone off and pick up easy marks' in defence.  The problem with 'having enough at the contest' is that the way Adel play in defence is that there isn't a contest - Lever is allowed to run off his man.   Quite right, Lever isn't going to out muscle Hogan et al that is the job of Talia et al so it frees Lever. 

    I still see a need for a specific strategy to stop Lever if we are to win.

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
