Correct, I might be imagining things but I swear I read once that you could see how many free kicks were paid by a certain umpire to each team but I could be wrong.

I'd just be fascinated to see how many free kicks the baby-faced umpire gave to Carlton.

I was weirdly confident we will win. This was the calmest I have been at a game, even though it was a close contest and I knew there was a lot riding on the result. I kept saying to my dad we will prevail because we are a class above. We played at probably 30% of our best, Carlton were at 100%. We pushed through at the end and won some vital contests and held on for the 4 points. We were so mature in the way we handled this match, missing 5 of our best 10 players, and our entire engine room.

Very proud of Oliver, Trac and ANB for stepping up in the absence of Jones, Viney and Tyson. I thought they were exceptional. ANB was brilliant in the last quarter. He has been good all year, and it's obvious his best role is inside mid. That he does some damage on the scoreboard is even better.

Great work from our defensive unit too. Best game I've seen Wagner play, and as usual Jetta is a freak. If he doesn't make the AA team, it is as rigged as I believe it to be. He is the best small defender in the competition. I would love for someone to prove me otherwise!

Hogan and Gawn will be better for the run. And yes I know Joel Smith was rusty, but gees he has some impressive attributes. I'd love to stick with him. His agility, his speed, his disposal, are all top notch. Love him. 

I've got pleanty of love for Jetta, but could both he an Hibbard make the AA side?  On a similar note, my perception was that Hibbard might have had a bit of an off day.  It wasn't that Hibbard discraced himself or anything, I just not that he was quite as effective and damaging as he has been for much of this season.

I do like Wagner as a defender.  While some question him for a lack of skill, he kicked two fairly handy goals yesterday, showing real poise and calm execution under pressure.  Also put on some pretty good spoils.  Beyond all else, I recon Wagner is as hard as nails, dosen't hesitate and fully commits to the contest.

Apologies if others have already mention this, but one thing that our players were doing a lot of in the game was tapping a ball towards a team mate rather than taking posession and getting tackled. Good to see.

Good win and much needed but it was disappointing that twice in the second half we had leads of around 10 points and let them back in to the extent that they took the lead.

I'll take it but we will need to move to another level to be any chance over the next few weeks.

The good thing is that so many players had an average game but yesterday we just could not get that fast moving game going that delivers the 6 goal plus quarters.

Accept we had players out but we still need to take a step up over the next few weeks.

On Kent .. he had two clear goaling opportunities which had he taken perhaps we would be speaking differently. At least he was in the right spot as others have said. Changing him for JKH or Kennedy is not a step up.

I'm not interested in picking on or singling out one particular umpire, but there were a few occurrences yesterday that really caught mire ire:

1.  First goal of the game from an off the ball incident 100m away paid in the Carlton goal square.  There was that much happening off the ball that I don't know how the umpires picked that single incident above all others and to pay it in the goal square was grossly unfair I thought.  Probably karma for the one Bugg got a few weeks back against the dogs, but in general I don't think these type of free kicks are good for the game;

2.  I think I counted three 50m penalties to Carlton which were all pretty borderline for infringing/holding up the player after a mark.  Similar incidents occurred when our players had the ball and pretty much nothing.  If I recall correctly,  I think we had one 50m penalty in our favor.  Umpires need to improve their consistency in this regard big time.

 

To their credit, I think the umpires did do fairly well to stop forwards being infringed upon for both sides.  Specifically Tommy Mc and Jeffy were rewarded for us from some pretty clumbsy defensive holding on and I recall Krusier getting one he deserved from an obvious infringement from Smith.

I've noticed it too.

It's actually being executed pretty well by a lot of our players and really helps to get the ball out of tight spots and get it moving quickly.  No doubt it is a much practiced and I dare say encouraged skill.  If the Bulldogs had their handball club, perhaps we have taken it one step further and started a tap/knock on club.  A few players like Watts and Trac with basketball backgrounds have always been good exponents of this skill, buy I get the feeling that it's become more prevalent within the team.

how good is Jetta at not giving away free kicks but winning 1 on 1s? he pulls the players' hips back subtly, arm around the shoulder for a second and then slinks in front to spoil.  an absolute natural

would be awesome if he could make it to 200 games.

I particularly enjoyed the time early in the match when the umpire called a Carlton player on the mark to move back 1m.  The player didn't move - he just ignored the umpire who kept looking straight at him. A couple of seconds passed, plenty of time for the umpire to have either repeated the call or paid a 50m penalty. But he did nothing.

Exactly. Cripps got hit rather stupidly by Lewis. Lewis deserved a suspension, and Cripps had nothing to do with the scathing report the Carlton doctor sent.

There is nothing to rejoice about a young player getting injured. I think we are better than this as Melbourne supporters. 

Just as I was happy that Carlton fans did not boo Hogan for his hit on Rowe.

The play in the last quarter when Lewis was tackled by Docherty was a clear round the neck.

Our mids were hung on to all day and Max needed a saddle on him for the number of rides he gave.

The Carlton doctor gave two scathing medical reports: Cripps who played the following week with a supposed broken jaw!; and Rowe who mysteriously got concussion after the game but played the next week. If he got concussion during the game them the Docs were negligent letting him play on.

Carlton and their supporters can go forth and multiply.

Bit of an over reaction there.  My comment was a tongue-in-cheek response to dc's cheeky comment, which I quoted. 

Maybe be I should have put the icons in to show it wasn't serious.

I hate Carlton, their supporters, their doctors, their fans... but I would never wish injury to a player, especially a young gun player. It's just a crappy thing to do.

Cripps had a legit broken jaw, and yes you can play with a broken jaw. What the doctor wrote is out of his hands. 

It would be the same as West Coast fans being happy if Oliver broke his leg. It's a scummy thing to do.

There were a few Melbourne fans around me who were rubbing their hands with glee when he came off. It clearly looked like a bad injury, so I thought it was pretty poor behaviour. Different he got a bit of a corky and came off, but it looked very nasty. 

Given how crappy we've had it with injuries to young gun players, I would hate to think our fans would be happy to see that happen to players from other clubs. After all, they are still somebody's kid who is probably watching on horrified.
