I'll name all the players who would struggle to make a contest in afl: jkh, trengove, Mitch King, hullet, garland when fit, Kent, Wagner, Mitch white

I'll leave weideman off because he is developing but King hullet and White have showed no signs of afl standard by comparison

thats 8 right there.

No. That's 8 that YOU think would struggle.

Kent's played 56 games and is 23. If we delisted him, he'd end up on another AFL list easily. In other words, we have depth other clubs would use. ie Good depth.

JKH was just given another contract, played good footy in his first year and got hurt. Been enormous in the VFL.

Mitch King is a 200cm 20 year old ruckman. What was Max doing when he was 20? Every club has to put a few years into young 200cm players. He's occupying his spot on the list as he should. You can't claim he's poor depth.

Wagner played super footy last year. Out of the side only because we have unbelievable starting rebound defenders. He's the exact kind of depth you want.

Garland, Hulett and White are the only ones I'll give you. I have my doubts any would find their ways onto other lists. And I'll give you BenKen who I reckon is finished at the end of the season, and of course Lumumba. That's 5 players.

Now take a look at GWS, currently the best going round, stocked full of high picks and money players. Rubbish no-name depth: Downie (retired), Mohr, Lloyd, Griffen, Tiziani, Simpson, Mzungu, De Boer... De Boer and Mzungu played some good footy, and are done. All these names wouldn't make it onto our list.

You can do the same experiment for all the clubs. We're doing as well as anyone. Better really.

Trengove played but was didn't really dynamically impact play. He was directing players where to go and marshalling down back. He did some OK things.  I don't know if he realises his cards are marked and plays accordingly.....

This was his chance to demand a spot and hasn't fired a shot for the last 2 weeks. They might have already told him that he isn't needed next year.

Such a sad situation. Had so much promise.

I notice That a debutant Ruckman for Port Melbourne won the BOG medal against Jake Spencer.  And some fools on this site believe he is AFL standard. FCS Melbourne get rid of him.

The only list Kent will be on next year is Peel Thunder's.  A dumb, lazy footballer, and that was before he went out drinking while on the cusp of selection. For a bloke whose only trick is a deadly left leg, he's useless in front of goal, as per the game he cost us against Geelong. He can't mark above his head and has no endurance.

To say Wagner has played super footy is just laughable. He screams NEAFL.

Some of these guys will be saved by the fact they reckon there are only about 30-40 draftable players in this years pool, but to claim they are quality depth is laughable. They are typical pick 60/rookie players. It's no one's fault, but you've just got to turn them over regularly so you do find the occasional Hunt, TMac, Hannan etc.

To each their own WJD. Before the season started he'd been hurt, but was regarded by many here and many in the media as best 22. Along with AVB. They didn't know who Hannan was at the time. I've seen Kent burn it up, mark well overhead for his size, and kick it 60. It's his uncontested marking on the lead I like the most. Unfortunately he needs to have a proper pre season to get the engine required for him to be used. I reckon players get given more time to grow up when they have specific attributes. He's still very young and has time. I think clubs with list problems would find a nice Kent sized hole that needs to be filled. Take a look at some of the lists out there that are crying out for the style of player he is. If Toumps can find his way onto a list like Port Adelaide's having shown nothing at all, a 23 year old quick player that's kicked 4 in a game can get onto Brisbane's or the Kangas. He'd come cheap too.

It's not laughable. It's what Goodwin thinks. Rates him very highly. But I'm sure you know better. I'm not all that keen on him. I like him spoiling, but I think to be a decent player he needs to be 100% fit off a big pre season. Any slight issues and he gets shown up. Looking at Hibberd for example, it's hard to get excited about Wagner. That said, I'm pleased he's there. If he was a better footballer, he'd leave since he's not getting opportunities. If Salem, Hunt and Hibberd are out, we'll be grateful to have a mature body to roll through. They can't all be Jordie Lewis running round back there.

You're misusing the word "laughable". And like the troll, you're not making any relevant comparisons. Just sticking the dagger into players fresh off a controversy or a poor game.

Everyone posting here can take the list and pick a few guys they don't like, like you did, then claim those players are "laughable." I don't particularly like 6-8 players running around for us. But I can put aside my own ratings, and recognise that the club sees things I don't. All you've managed to do is pick on two guys. Both of whom have played good footy in recent seasons.

Give me names on another list that were drafted in the area these guys were, that aren't best 22, but that ARE good depth. Or give me a highly rated team who's worst 6 are clearly better than ours. I bet you can't.

Nice try at avoiding the question I asked.  I would blame our loss 50/50 on injuries and the fact it was our fourth game in 18 days.  Nothing to do with depth.

I'll ask again - which of the other clubs, other than GWS, have depth that's better than ours?

Lol Wagner playing super footy last year? I don't believe we we're watching the same team

wagner has done nothing, only thing going for him is his height

jkh can set the vfl alight all he wants but we recruited him to play afl not vfl.. No point in having a good vfl player if they can't translate their skills

kent would have to be the laziest player on our list, struggles in the vfl, I'd hardly consider that depth

That could be the most stupid comment I have read on demon land and that is saying something.

Every player at every club is recruited with the hope or expectation of playing AFL. The list size and number of players that can play each week dictates that not everyone can.

Super footy for what he is and what we gave up for him.

JKH, you have a short memory. His first season he looked like a player, and has been injured since.

36 touches in VFL. Lazy. Ok.

Yeah, you're a troll. Said the same thing over and over. Whine about hating 3 players and claim we don't have depth. Like the entire list should win brownlows.

Dappa Dan FCS get a life champ. WJD said it was laughable to say Wagner has played super footy at AFL level. That statement is correct. His summary of Kent is spot on and the fact he'd get on the pizz, surely doesn't warrant your long winded reply.

Words, words, words.... Wagner certainly has played very good football at AFL level. He played super footy at VFL level only one week ago. He was good in the first qtr against Swans (can't bring myself to watch more of the replay). Wagner's brief AFL career has been stalled by injury in 2017. He is still highly rated by his coaches, and will form an important part of the backline in the near future.

How did we beat West Coast in Perth?

How did we go 5-2 without a ruckman?

We lose one game with an all-round terrible performance from everyone (including the first choice players), on the back of three consecutive 6-day breaks and a trip from Perth, and your concern is "depth".

Your argument is weak.

That's not exactly what he said.  He said Wagner has played super footy for what he is and what we gave up for him - essentially a rookie listed player who has made it on to the list.  Read posts carefully before you get your knickers in a knot.

No if you look at his original post he said Wagner played super footy last year, he has fumble fingers and was pathetic on Friday, better off blooding a new kid instead of playing him

Out of the players that i saw yesterday the ones i would be considering are JKH, benken and maynard (if he is allowed)

We need more mids and pace in the seniors and these might allow some rotations to help

I like him but he needs to show a lot more to establish a permanent spot in the 22.  He's good depth at the moment.

Oh, and Saty, this is my opinion, no need to tell everyone it is.

Which new kid would you have sacrificed? You realise when you have 5 of your best 10 out and 5 next best second tier players injured (J Smith, Brayshaw, T Smith, Garland, VDB) and another 4 good VFL performers in the sin bin, whoever comes in would find the going very tough against a side like the Swans. Probably do more harm than good to a young player's confidence.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom
