Round 12 AFL Team of the Week

Watts had his moments, obviously, but certainly not stiff to miss out. Didn't have a great game.

I quite like Sidebottom as a player, but I thought he really went missing for them in the second half when they really needed the likes of him to stand up under pressure. 22 possessions in the first half, only 10 in the 2nd. Got badly caught with the ball a couple of times trying to beat the tackler, and his clever kicks in the first half were too-clever-by-half in the 2nd half.

A great game is precisely what Watts had! Even if that greatness can be filtered down to fleeting moments with the ball in hand, the symbolic nature of his triumphant arrival at the pinnacle in the closing moments; the eruption of joy amongst team mates and supporters; the fact that every step of his charge forward and spearing goal will be etched into our collective memories forever... that is the essence of greatness in our game, Sir!

This is why I find stats misleading. I get how many possessions Oliver had (for example).

Jack Watts won us the game, then saved us the game. End of story. If it had have been Cyril Rioli , he would be in Team Of The Week.

Collingwood get 2 in the side off a loss. We beat them get 1 in the side, 1 on the bench and the fans pick.

This shows how the game was won and lost really. We had a more consistent team performance across the ground (as we usually do) whereas Collingwood relied more on 2 or 3 to win it for them (as they usually do).

How did Viney get in ahead of Oliver and Jones (who had to be voted in)? Oliver was far more influential.

Hibberd is/was better than Howe too. It's a 4 quarter game.

Well the AFL has to fit in as many Essendrug players as they can each week as part of their agenda to give them as much positive press as possible after the drug saga.

Just watch, there will be 4 or 5 Bombers in the AA team even if they miss the finals.

Trying to pump them up before the next court case revelation??

Wonder what they were on at the weekend for such a surprise result?  Can they keep it up?

Agree with your description of the moment totally, and agree that moment was great .........But.......greatness will only be the continued replication of those great moments.

I reckon Watts has had many moments of on and off field great incidents, but until there is consistency of action at that level I am reluctant to label him as a great of the game

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
