Agree. Richmond are just a turd rolled in glitter right now. Our best Vs our is should be a no contest.

Essendon won't make it. They are as overrated as anyone in the AFL right now. Saints have shown glimpses just like us, and should push for a spot in the 8.

Trouble is, so far, our best is only 1-2 quarters a game.

There is a huge difference between "should be" and "is"!  Until that is addressed by the playing group we will remain marginal.

They only beat us because we were down two players including our ruckman.

This is the most even season in living memory, Richmond aren't as good as their position suggestions and Sydney aren't as bad.

Okay fair enough, just think they should be given credit for their performance thus far, given the predictions at season start.

And letting poor sides to take the initiative and relying on 'the fight back' all the time. Also not being able to close out tight finishes.

tbh i don't mind richmond's season thus far.

they've got an excellent tall defender and forward in rance and riewoldt and surrounded them with a rotation of likely types - be it talls who are lock-downs (astbury, grimes) or runners (houli, ellis, mcintosh) in defense or a plethora of exciting smalls up forward (castagna, butler, rioli and now bolton).

their midfield has been completely rejuvenated by the addition of nankervis, prestia and caddy alongside the star quality of cotchin and martin plus workmanlike approach of grigg, lambert and titch edwards.

they're playing a good brand of footy and have not only lost one game by more than a goal, and have won enough games to be top 4 at the halfway mark of the season.

it's an enviable position to be in.

Sounds like you might need a time machine. Hit something like the two years time setting.

Richmond's key players are mature, which is why they are playing decent football at the moment.

If they weren't they would be entering a disaster zone.

Reiwoldt is 29, Rance 27, Cotchin 27, Grigg 29, Houli 29 Martin 25.

Look at some of ours: Hogan 22, Oliver 19, Viney 23, Tyson 23, Hunt 22, Salem 21

i actually don't think they're that different to us at all:

riewoldt = a mature hogan

rance - t mac plus 2 years

cotchin = jones minus 2 years

grigg = vince minus 2 years

houli = lewis minus 2 years

martin = a mature petracca

people are doing a serious disservice to summarily dismiss them; winning footy is good footy

we definitely have a bit of advantage in oliver and hunt being on the younger end of the spectrum, but it's not as pronounced as i think we'd like to think

they're in the same position we are i reckon - the teams sort of pushing to finish high-ish in the ruck of teams that are sort of 5-15

Richmond are going ok.

I reckon there are about 5 or 6 sides around the same mark, but Richmond seem to be a level above.

Melbourne, St Kilda, Essendon, Fremantle, even Collingwood are all pretty much the same, good enough if they have a day out to beat anyone (eg Melb beat Crows, Essendon beat Geelong, Saints vs GWS) but far too inconsistent and to be honest, just not good enough to challenge for top 6. All drop games they shouldn't.

Fremantle have managed to string some wins together, but I'm not sure they have the cattle to consistently compete against the best in the comp.

Whoever fills that 8th spot will probably do it on the back of a nice draw and less injuries than the rest of the chasing pack.

Richmond are just another rubbish side.

There are no standouts.

Equalisation has worked.

This is why any team who makes the finals has a chance (because of the pre-finals bye).

If they're rubbish...what are we ?

They are playing well at the moment but they are a much more mature side than us.

Plus they have had zero injury issues this year which helps.

If we can scrape into the finals I hope we get them first up, I am very confident we would destroy them.

Not sure what I want out of today's freeo vs the Filth contest - upside of a Dockers loss will be making sure we're right behind them with a much better percentage but the big downside will be a collywobbles team on 20 points with some increasing confidence. I think they are much more of a concern than either of the WA teams. I think no matter what, Fremantle are pretty rubbish and will fall out the 8 by years end (like west coast will too). So having a charged up filth with tails up for second half the year my not be the best outcome for us or the saints. Might be better to see them keep losing.

Either way - it's not a huge game that will effect our season and we just need to keep winning and not worry about everyone else - but just an interesting internal battle about today's outcome.

All fair enough, except no way is Houli and Lewis even remotely in the same boat. Lewis is a leader, Houli is not.

Richmond are no better than Melbourne.   We beat them round 6 if we don't lose our ruck and another player before half time.

How would Richmond have gone without a number one ruck and Jack Riewoldt for 75% of the season ?  How do they go with Elton rucking and no key forward ?

And what, they were one win ahead of us at round 10 with a worse percentage ?

They've won less quarters than us for the year.  I don't get the fawning over them.

Luck has run Richmond's way all season. The perfect example was our game against them. Our two injuries before half time. Cotchin starting a fight, getting a free kick as Riewoldt illegally joins in on the fight from the bench.

It's rare luck goes your way all year. I still don't rate Richmond. Like Geelong, they rely on too few. Their better players are also those that always fail under pressure (see any finals they've ever played in).

I dont think anyone's fawning over Richmond. All many are suggesting is they be awarded begrudgingly acknowledgement that they aren't the basketcases many would still describe them.

Winning qtrs as a stat alone is vacuous.

Winning games strangely isnt.

They wont be ninth. We might be.

yes, well, houli is yet to get suspended for three weeks for punching a bloke behind play...so...

lewis is a far superior player to houli but their roles are vaguely similar - read the play behind the ball, marshall the troops, execute rebound

Ha! he was suspended because of the Carlton doctors report, the guy played the next week.....long bow.

no, i'm not buying that.

he was suspended for deliberately hitting a player behind play with enough force to give said player a hairline fracture of the jaw.

the medical report didn't help but he was always going to be suspended cos it was a stupid, thuggish, ill-disciplined act by a supposed leader who should know better.

and it will, in all likelihood, have cost us two vital wins that could be the difference btw finishing 9-12 and 5-8.

strange that there has been no reporting (that i've seen) since that week of cripp's fractured jaw.   being one of their best players this is quite odd.   just saying.

So you'd trade him for Huoli then?

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
