Team Statistics YTD

On all stats on the AFL mobile app for teams Melbourne are in the top 6 (except for hit outs suprise suprise and we have the All Australia ruckman chomping at the bit) and for most we are top 3, if not number 1 ranked team. disposals, contested possessions, tackles, inside 50's etc...

 

Why are we not in the top 3? 

 

I'm interested in people's thoughts, statisticaly speaking we should be.

 

Does that mean with Hogan and Gawn back we will head that way?

 

Not often mathematics lies but it seems to be...

My stab at this would be that we are winning most games but when we have switched off we have really switched off and been hammered in that time and then not scored well enough when on top to come back and win

But nearly every relative statistic I can find suggests otherwise. Maybe out losing margin is small and our winning margin is high?

Haven't seen the the numbers but would say - Conversion! Heaps of possessions we know that but a lot are rubbish. Also inaccurate goal kicking has cost games.

The story of our season so far seems to be that we dominate general play for large portions of games, but don't capitalise on that dominance. So we get lots of clearances, lots of inside 50s, lots of the ball, spend lots of time in possession, but don't put it on the scoreboard.

Then we turn off for periods of games and in those moments our opponents often score heavily.

So we end up with the stats in our favour from being better in general play for longer, but we don't always end up with the win because we don't kick enough goals from our periods of dominance.

Thanks Josh. Thats why we have been in a winnable position in the final quarter every game this year.

Forward entry conversion & lack of talls certainly has been some of the reasons. (Bring in any of Gawn, Hogan etc)

Makes for an interesting second half of the year!

No accuracy and conversion rates are both top 3.

 

It's very bizarre, perhaps when I sober up I'll look into it more

I don't know about up until this round but after our win against Adelaide i think, we ranked fourth for most quarter won... so we actually have been winning a lot of quarters, it is just that the quarters we lose, we tend to lose drastically.

Currently equal-third on 23. Port and Adelaide both on 27 (Adelaide with one left to play).

GWS is also on 23 so could go past us but no one else can so we will end the round on fourth, most likely.

Regardless, these stats give the Coaches fuel for their messages and more importantly reinforcement to build belief in the players.

I just find it amazing that statisticaly a team can be so good yet to watch, and on the ladder, they seem mediocre.

 

For what it's worth I think this team is still 3-4 years off its peak

It spells excitement for me.

I'm also buoyed by the fact that Goody is an attacking AND innovative coach.

I'd be interested to know where we rank from opponents converting forward entries. There seems to be a point for us where a forward entry from the opposition = a shot on goal. 

In terms of the other stats (the positive ones) I think that's reflective in the fact we've been in every game up until at least the last 10min. And the Geelong game we smashed them everywhere except the scoreboard for much of the game. I think it shows we're not far off but are missing that last bit of polish. 

Having your no 1 & 2 rucks and full forward out doesn't help either.

The only way to qualify the stats is through our heavy high press and Simon's Tsunami tactic. Ironically, it effectively creates a flood against. More possession, more i50s, more tackles and pressure acts as we trap it in and try to find an avenue to goal. The flip-side is that we leak easy and quick scores against when a team gets through - hence the W-L column and why we win a large share of quarters without them being comprehensive wins. We're labouring to goal, while our opposition scores with much less effort - possibly the reason why we've also struggled to get over the line at the end. Simon has rolled the dice - and this was always the way it would be.

We are elite in that category and always have been. It's a part of the Melbourne DNA, and if I have one criticism of that abortion of a logo that Cameron Schwab dreamed up, it's that he didn't include some reference to our turnovers on the emblem.

Yep. We need to find efficient ways to goal when we have the ascendancy. Too often we bash our heads against a defence, only to get hosed at the other end.

1.  We have so far failed to play Hogan at CHF in a permanent role.  This will turn the tide for us up forward IMO if we ever wake up and do so.

2.  We are lacking players who lead up at the ball carrier often enough and recognise the value of playing in front when the heat is on in the middle.  Too many of the regular forwards are sitting back either expecting the longer bomb or so used to it they have forgotten the value of playing in front or putting in multiple leads.

3. We lack quality ball users coming inside 50 who can hit up leading targets or kick to their favoured side more often.  Stretch is a "must" have for this option alone.  Harmes, Hibberd and Watts (when playing outside 50) are quite capable at this point but Stretch is a must addition to improve our lot.

4. Harmes , Bugg and ANB are also slowly starting to bring some forward pressure inside 50 for longer periods of the game to assist Jeffy.  So we are getting more repeat shots, albeit under pressure.

Thank goodness we have one genuine forward who knows where to run and how to find the goals.  Harmes and Hannan also slowly becoming dangerous as smaller/medium goal kickers at the drop.
