I'm happy to see Melksham come in for Salem, however I think Melk is being played out of position at senior level.  By all reports he is a prolific and attacking weapon at VFL level, but seems to struggle to read the play from the half-backline in the seniors.  I know there is a huge jump from VFL standard, but I'm yet to see any of these traits in his AFL games.  Would like to see what he'd contribute from the wing or onball.

I've been thinking about this and without going into any analysis, it would appear that based on the current W/L ratio and the evenness of the competition, it's going to be quite possible to finish with 13 or 14 wins and be jostling for a top 4 spot. 10 wins might even snag you eighth possie this year.

One thing's for sure and that is that percentage is going to be really important this season and I'm glad that ours is reasonably healthy at the moment.

I like your optimism Steve. I don't share it however.. but kudos :)

do you happen to know what position he played at Essendon and how he played?

What to do? I'm kinda reminded of the old saying about shuffling the deck chairs on the titanic. Every club has key player injuries. Great sides have the depth to cover them. We lack depth. We have built a great core group but need to keep building. We need another cull at the end of this year and to stop carrying people if we really want a flag. Plus reexamine the list and see if we really need those development players we have. Hoping we can do some more creative recruiting like Lewis and Hibberd for next year and pick up another big, strong experienced forward and defender. Am grateful for the young guns that we have but they need help.  I also think 11 wins might get a team a finals birth this year. Hope its us but the window is closing this weekend I fear.

My understanding was that he played his best football under Hird as a on-baller/half-forward.  It was then Thompson/Goodwin who started playing him off half-back.

He played midfield and half forward. Came top 5 in their bnf playing midfield/wing in a year they played finals. Goodwin decided to play him in defense and it hasn't worked out great. Given how inconsistent our forwards have been I'd love to see him played at half forward. Can kick a goal and could put some pressure on too.

Thanks guys

IMO we have to persevere with Melksham at least for the remainder of this woeful season.  Of the revolving trios of change men (ANB, JKH Bugg Kennedy etc)  I can see a few not making next years list so it becomes all the more important to see if Melksham can become a regular. Perhaps a change of position could help.

Would like to give BenKen a run given he has had decent reports from VFL the last few weeks, comes in for Kent. Would even replace him with Harmes as you know he will chase and tackle.

Salem out surely means that Milky is in, I hope he has learnt how to play while in the 2's.

Weid stays I guess, but could we please stop kicking it to him after a behind, he barely effects the contest and gives the oppo an easy re-entry, here is an idea, pretend you are going to kick to that side of the ground then go the other way, just to mix things up.

I'm not really fussed who's in or out.

My observations of games this year suggests to me the personnel aren't the win/lose factor.

The ability to read a watch is.

In this regard could whoever are selected turn up for the first bounce !! Much appreciated

A further note....the first 30 mins isn't actually a warm up and playing kick to kick with the 'other' fellows is now to stop.

The team is also advised that unlike some junior underage comps we DO actually take into account the scores so could the players start this practice prior to the start of the second period.

Thankyou

Well, that means that the Roos will drop Higgins who kicked 1.4 and should have put us away much earlier

I would take a Higgins kicking 1.4 over bugg at his best any day. Not a great comparison of players there.....

I reckon Melksham will come in to the side, possibly for Wagner, although I'm not confident on that.

Do we drop Weideman?  No one could argue that he is horribly out of form, but can we actually do it?  And if so, who do we bring in?  Is Tim Smith ready to come straight back into the side, or do we go with another small?

I actually have no idea of the changes this week.

Weideman, Kent and O McD definitely out till they show form.. In for mine: ANB, Stretch and someone over 194cm..anyone....

Yup, and in 2013 in that role he averaged 20 possessions, 4 inside 50's, 3 clearances and kicked 16 goals for the season.

So he basically played a JKH type role but could actually do it, so hopefully starting this week he is given a go there.

How many over 194cm do  we have in reserve that aren't in rehab?

It was not comparing players - it was comparing the kicking at goal

Having said that, I think that Bugg has a role to play

They all have roles to play, actually playing that role is a different story.

Not a fan of Bugg?

If that is what you meant, then yeah I am, runs all day not bad 1on1 and when he went for his first shot on goal I said to my old man he will kick this coz most of the time he does, I think he just needs to find consistency like the rest of the team.

If you didn't Bugg, please explain.

Bugg missed some easy shots and goal kicking is not really his forte - technically, quite poor

I like him as a tagger - give him a job

Perfect for Ablett, methinks

He's been playing at half forward, so he would be a good choice to play on Harbrow who has been in good form off half back for the Suns.

Four changes are unlikely, I'd have thought.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
