that does not cover the cost of the first game. (Think stadium works , travel staff etc)  For it to work they need a minimum of five years including AFL money.

AFL seems desperate to make footy somehow global. international rules, NZ and now this.  

It's an aussie game, we like it that way. spend money on grass roots footy and supporting the lower leagues not feckin china

prior to the game AFL says the ground holds 20k+

Vision of the game shows lots of space free of spectators.

Day after the AFL says ground sold out and attendance of 10k+ and it was a big success.

Hmm is it just me or does something smell here?

They always said the ground could hold 14K but were aiming for 10K. They easily got that. It was near on impossible to get a ticket to the game. A lot of the seats looked vacant as you could watch the game standing in corporate areas where they had booze. 

I really don't understand the negativity. It was an awesome day and footy in China isn't going away any time soon.You are what you read, and I guess the Australian media that weren't at the game have nothing else to write about....

Yep. I went to the Dees v Lions game at that same stadium and I would have guessed a capacity of 10 - 15K max.  The figure of 10K might be accurate, but I doubt very much they had many interested locals; rather, I would say that at least 75% were tourists and expats, with the rest being local dignitaries or friends of expat Australians who had had their curiosity piqued.

From here it looks like a disaster.

$4million to stage hardly a local in sight but that might be good as it barely got above an exhibition match as a spectacle.

So what was achieved?

Effect on the local? Hmm looks bugger all to me.

Getting  the AFL game of the weekend televised in China every week would achieve a lot more.

If that cost $4 million it might be a better use of the money.

Reported that Port acheived$12 mill new sponsorship.

Certainly an exhibition match. Both teams playing for 4 points was meant to give more intensity. Better team selection and buy in by clubs would improve the contest and provide a better display Gold Coast are already subsidised so much by AFL they had no incentive. Doggies would try harder coz that's the way they play every game now. It's survival.

I wouldn't mind Demons playing with desperation to grow the game we initiated and pick up the first of the privileged market which can only grow.

Match of the round televised into China would help and be more effective. I would also like to see the Demons match as the match of the round more regularly.

Yes grass roots local footy should also be supported but China represents new money coming into the game. We should be able to spread that new money after making sure we make a profit. Need to monitor and manage gambling impacts very carefully.

There would have been 3-4000 locals there. It cost 4 million but has brought in much more. Games are now regularly televised on CCTV5, which is basically the same as fox sports. Sure the game was crap, but so are bunch of afl games played in Australia too. Just keep hating.

It's not a matter of anyone being a "hater"... if you consider 3-4,000 locals (and how many of them were genuinely interested vs dignitaries and people representing companies involved in sponsorships at the ground?) to be a good crowd in a city of 20 million, I'm afraid you're somewhat kidding yourself; particularly if it does get as much airplay as you are telling us.  As an example, last year in Sydney (a city of what, 4 million?) an American College Football match between University of California, Berkeley and the University of Hawaii, drew a crowd of 61,247, mostly locals... and that is in a sport that probably has less local participation in Sydney than AFL would have in China.

I hope it does become successful in China, but I remember hearing a few years back that cricket was taking off in a big way and that it was going to be the next big thing over there... and look how well that has gone.  I'm not so optimistic.
