That average height for Essendon can't be right. We've only got 2 players on our list shorter than 177cm (Kennedy and JKH), so it seems ridiculous if that was their average.

Yeah definitely can't be correct. There are very few players that short, let alone be the average height.

To be honest it's such an outrageous error that it makes me doubt the veracity of any of it.

I can only put up what was publicly available Nasher. Courtesy of footywire.  Who knows maybe they got it wrong, maybe they didn't.

Edit:  Maybe they meant to put 187cm and fat fingered it!

The needle has swung so far in the other direction that you can't even critique elements of Jack's game anymore without a rapid backlash. I was similarly disappointed a week or so ago by some of his efforts when he was in everyone's bests. And if he didn't get that dodgy free in front on the w/e, I would have been rather upset at his effort in that marking contest as well.

What, you don't think he's had enough criticism over his career? It's become some sort of sport in itself, let's find some fault in Jack, no matter how well he plays or what he acheives on the ground.

See if you can pick out an incident or two where he hasn't put in to your standards and then run with it, that's better than saying good game Jack, 4 goals a number of possessions and several goal assists.

Jack is not naturally a bash and crash player, he's a natural footballer but hasn't had the hard edge that some CHF's have had because he doesn't have the body shape of a Carey or Brown. He's playing ruck and that's got him more involved in the game, so he doesn't drift in and out like he once may have and he's certainly playing a harder brand of football than he used to, but that just doesn't seem enough for some.

First time in a long time i can remember going into a match with more experience (just) both overall and at the top end of 100 games or more......

And after some concern about our big man stocks around the ground did the bombers go in way short overall!??  The weight difference is massive at this level also....

Assuming these figures are correct (the 177.2cm, as has been discussed, simply cannot be accurate):

The positive sign here is that despite being more experienced, we were still younger.

Youth is one thing, but we are now developing a side that remains young (and with its future ahead of it) but is finally beginning to play games together, as a unit.

McDonald-Tipungwuti 171cm

Colyer 175cm

McNiece 178cm

Green 178cm

Fantasia 177cm

Doesn't make the average 177cm but there's a few shortys in there

Their average height was 185.2, it screwed up because it had McNeice's height listed at 0

Well that would explain it :pj:

I have been enjoying the read on Bomber blitz about the game.

The main thing I took away from it was that the Bomber fans do not rate us as a team. Hopefully the next year is about getting us some respect in the general football community.

On a more interesting note here is an extract from an insightful post looking at the game from a Bomber viewpoint:

I was (un)fortunate enough to watch the Carlton game from L2 at the MCG.

Today, I thought we were in trouble in the first 90 seconds of the game when Melbourne set up a zone defence exactly the same as Carlton did - and I mean almost exactly. Namely, stronger concentration in the corridor but allowing us to go wide if we wanted coming out of defence

Like the game Carlton game - and without the excuse of poor conditions - we did exactly that. Rarely trying to use running players to cut through the zone or try and hit up passes. Instead we went slow and wide with short passes and the player marking near the boundary then didn't even try and find someone in-board and just bombed it down the line....where of course it came back with interest. This all happened at the end of Q2 on Anzac Day. It was best illustrated in Q4 (I think) when we tried to switch and Hurley received it just inside D50. He already had Gleeson out wide and went to him - he hadn't bothered looking inboard to the point of the centre square where Heppell, unopposed had led to. Well Gleeson marked it out wide and showed no urgency at all so the Melbourne players pushed up and blocked the paces....until Jobe pushed through just forward of the wing for what would have been an easy 15m pass inboard and forward and Gleeson totally ignored him.

Gleeson just bombed it long down the line and of course we were outnumbered and the Demons swept the ball away and scored. This is precisely what happened against Carlton time and time again and today was a straight repeat. The players gradually lost confidence and some of the skill errors were as a result of not having options and not knowing what to do. Only McGrath & McKenna actually tried to run and break the lines hit up options (not always successfully) and it's run from behind that breaks up zones - just like at the start of Q4 on Anzac Day when two early Pie behinds resulted in coast-to-coast goals for us because Goddard & Merrett hit targets on the kick-outs who quickly handballed to a running player from behind who cut through the Collingwood players and opened the game up.

After half-time the Demons got right on top in clearances and that contributed to the score blowing out.

Coaching - Worsfold was unimaginative in a way that all modern coaches are. None make too many positional changes as players are now trained to play specific positions. All coaches want is a lift in intensity & effort, especially around the ball. Which is where we were found wanting. To have only 46 tackles on the day was pathetic (Demons only had 48). That lack of intensity was was shown by 3 Demon goals from 3 free kicks against our younger players (McGrath (Melbourne's first), McKenna (Q3), Tippa (Q3). On each occasion it was this younger player going to fight for the ball without one teammate assisting with a shepherd or block. Senior players just looked on. We were seriously off our game.

BIG faceplant into the fence from McGrath.  He really could have hurt himself doing that.

Also a really nice contested mark for Watts to kick another goal.

The fake grass is dangerous, the fence is dangerous with its hard exterior of advertiing garbage and the photographers that sit around with their equipment and aluminium boxes and tables and chairs are a freaking disgrace. WTF are they doing there and why does the AFL allow it??? Surely they can take a photo from behind the fnece with their 10000000 x zoom lenses.

Someone will get hurt and they will have a very good case for negligence against the AFL

It seems that you can't even critique that you can't critique anymore. I largely agree with you, and said he was in the bests. But Jack still has the capability to be a better player, and the level of criticism he has been subjected to in the past shouldn't have any bearing on current critiques.

OK, so that's  over.

TMac's kicking was every bit as bad as advertised.

Pedersen is doing a great job as the waaaaay undersized ruck, getting in the way, pretending to be a spare midfielder and generally making a nuisance of himself.

Oliver is a freak.

We have a whole bunch of quick young mids and flankers in the squad now.  Far more than I thought.  Some of them even have skills as well.

How good a pick was Hunt?  The kid is going to be something special one of these days.

If we kick like that against the Hawks they'll slaughter us.

I would have been hard to watch the whole thing in one sitting.  Some of that play was truly painful to watch.  Spread out over most of an evening it was bearable.

Just saw the Daniher hugging Hibberd footage. Add that to him celebrating his one goal after 7 shots and what a cringeworthy individual. What a clown. This isn't primary school footy.

Strange isn't it? We lose to Essendrug SECONDS last year and this year we thrash their FIRSTS! When at Frankston Primary School many kids were Bombers fans because Frankston footy club wore the same jumpers. I was proud to wear my Melbourne jumper to school and seen as being different. I have maintained my loyalty over many decades. Go the mighty Demons!

Anyone mentioned Lewis' goal? How the [censored]? The old ball wedged between the goalposts, what a kick.

I also liked the smart arze look he gave to the Essendon supporting nuffies over the fence.

He is a dirty p**** and arrogant to boot. I'm just glad he is our dirty p**** who is arrogant.

That's a weird one isn't it? Franger is as far away from Essendon as one can get (outer south east area supporting a team based in the north west).

Not that I doubt you as I know plenty of people from out that way who support Essendon. It just doesn't make much sense geographically.

I think it was just the Frankston jumpers being the same. As I said, I am going back a long way. Might be all different now.

I guess living in Frankston you have to take pride in what you can  :)

Petracca makes TOTW on the bench.  http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-05-02/team-of-the-week-r6-did-we-get-it-right

Not bad for a guy who has played about 20 games and playing on one of the top FB in the game and playing sore.  Well done!

He has announced himself with that complete game.  His breakout game will be far better and is yet to come.  Something to really look forward to.  Then another, and another and...

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
