What to do about the Casey ground

I have thought for along time that the Casey deal does nothing to maximise our competitive position. Although we have made great progress in the last year or so in getting both the AFL men's side and the VFL side to play similar styles of football ( believe it or not it is only a matter of two or three years ago when the Casey coach used to knock the senior side's style of play at quarter and three quarter time), our actual results there for both men and women are frankly abysmal.

This does not matter when we assentially play practise mstches there, but now that we play first grade women's matches there, and this week we are literally playing for the chance to progress to a premiership match with the girls, it is time to ask whether we should ever play competitive football there. Frankly I think we would be much better off to play at Gosches Paddock than at Casey (or even at the Junction Oval if it comes to that). We would get a better crowd and we would probably win! Something that is unlikely at Casey....

I've told the family that I'm not interested in going to pre season matches there anymore. It really is a hole, but if the men's side played there in the season proper, I would follow them.

But I don't think Gosch's Paddock is the right option and the Junction Oval certainly isn't. So it's Casey for the moment.

Casey VFL team enjoyed a massive home ground advantage last year. The AFLW team plays there they will get that too eventually.  Our AFL side won well against Carlton this preseason and nany of the players have experience there.  It's not an ideal venue but I dont think a move is priority.

I don't understand the hate Casey Fields gets from these forums

Also the playing surface is second to none outside of the AFL grounds. If anyone went to the preseason game v Carlton you would've seen how immaculate the grass looked.

To understand it just think of one word - CRANBOURNE. Makes Broadmeadows and Niddrie look like Harvard Law School.

Great surface.

Developing suburb so good for long term. 

Average coffee at the ground, improving food. Both were horrid for most of the past few years.

Great long term membership investment.The AFL shop in Fountain Gate shopping centre has sold MFC gear even when the club was a crock. At Auskick, more and more Dees jumpers emerging year by year.  

Nightmare for access. The long term plan for two car entrances, bus and rail access etc... is excellent, but the current situation shows the civil engineers in charge are dim-witted at best.

Nightmare for prevailing wind. Organisers desperately need to plant some trees and build a large grandstand. The unrelenting wind ruins many good games of footy.

If we can hold on for another decade, with our (hopefully some time soon) success, this move will be an absolute treasure.

I can understand why so many inner south east Dees fans won't go there, but toughen up princesses.

I think people need to move on from the idea that we're going to give Casey the flick. If anything we seem to be getting tighter so rather than saying we should get out we should do the opposite and try to lobby for better facilities there. Create a proper grandstand with better public and player facilities, but most of all look at better ways to either get the public from the station to the ground or provide better/alternative road access. 

Its a growth corridor which is always a boom for politicians so it could be done. I agree in its current condition Casey fields is difficult at best in all aspects, but it's not a lost cause and there are definitely ways we can maximise its potential. 

I will just say with respect to our Women's team I think we should lobby to play a home game at Punt Rd oval, or as a totally different option, Elwood's football ground next to the golf course. Only for the reason that we should try to have a home game in an area accessible to more people.

Maybe the club should give out tissues instead of scarves with our memberships....

Casey is fine, if you don't like it then stay home and listen to the radio and spare everyone the ongoing sooking.

Think you'll find many do exactly that
