I hope he returns in a coaching role - excellent mentor and role model for young men.

He can teach them how to drop marks and kick it into the turf.

Chris Dawes career has been ended by injury as much as anything. Unfortunately, we got very little on field from him, because he did his dash at Collingwood. He was obviously a very talented footballer and I wish him all the best with his future endeavours. I think too many people have been too negative about him on this site. He played several very good games for us when he was fit and he may well have kickstarted Watts career with his mentoring.

I don't agree with JnrMac all the time but here he summed it up pretty well.
In 2013-2013, we stunk on ice. It was an open secret that getting sent to/going to Melbourne was like going into exile in Siberia. He was never going to be the savior but any help we could get at the time was appreciated.

Let's be honest. Chris could have delivered more on the field (a lot of that had to do with his body letting him down). While I have been very vocal we do need a physical pressure forward, if there is someone who can play that role but can also bring something else to the table then they will get the gig over someone who plays the bullocking forward role exclusively (Pedo wins on this front as he can ruck and mark over his head while Dawes is limited in these areas).

However, anyone who saw how he carried himself around the club during a time when I genuinely feared for it's survival would be smart enough to show Chris ample respect.

Yes agree although loved his managers comment

" It is a tragedy because he's ready to start pre season injury free for the first time in two years"

Well interesting comment, that's all I'll say!

He's had calf and wrist injuries from day one at Melbourne and I'm sure we didn't see the best of him, I really like Chris and I wish they had a position for him at the club even if it wasn't a playing position.

The fact that he is finally injury free just makes it worse, but I understand the club's position.

He may be injury free now but you could almost guarantee that he wouldn't be by the start of the season.

...and we can't employ ex players just because we like them. He has to have a role to play.

Chris is looking to continue his playing career, it will be interesting to see if another club picks him up.

As far as we go, we've definitely made the right call.

nope - it's just an opinion like everything else. And my opinion is pretty clear - anyone can critique a player and posters will agree or disagree with it - when a critique respectfully highlights a players flaws or shortcomings or praises the players skills to the heavens there is robust debate on it. When a poster resorts to derogatory name calling or plain nasty send off's it usually gets called out and rightly so. It is unnecessary, adds nothing to the debate and leads me to believe that the poster may struggle to formulate a well reasoned response.. If you feel it is positive posting to write "good riddance" about a delisted player then don't be surprised if other posters call you out.  But hey that's just my opinion.

Agreed - I don't think that he will get another shot. On his resume to date, his body is just too fragile.

Bloody well said Nut, point I have been trying to make, though the poster who makes derogatory comments usually says more about themselves than the player

Chris Dawes was a top bloke, well respected around the cllub, his time with MFC just didn't work out like he and the club would have liked, for a myriad of reasons

Not to mention, he has done something which the 'name callers' on here will never do.  He has played AFL football and he is studying a law degree.  Whoops, I just contradicted myself.  By that alone, he simply can't be a good bloke, can he??

Agreed Nut, i don't think there is much doubt that Dawes has probably not delivered quite as much on field as he would have liked given the deal he came to the club on, but i think he has contributed a huge amount off the field and played a huge role in the young players development at the club, if anyone on here has the pleasure of meeting Jesse Hogan, ask him what he thinks of Dawesy and that will give you a good idea of the impact he's had, some players are recruited for more than just what they offer on field and Dawes was recruited at a time when noone wanted anything to do with the MFC

it's totally unproductive to call a player names at any time, but when that player has left the club it's totally pointless, there is no doubt many people will have different opinions on his form and i am fine with that, but name calling achieves nothing.

one thing i disagree with is the assertion that you have to have played AFL footy to be critical of a players form or have general discussion around that players place in the team/on the list, there are people at basically every AFL club in critical roles of the footy departments that have never played AFL footy but make these decisions. ( not that you made this assertion, i have seen it from other posters. )

True, but my point was simply that he had achieved this level of sport.  That is an indisputable fact.

This is true, and i agree it should mean he demands enough respect to stop name calling and other immature rubbish, Dawes has done a lot for our club.

And I hear all the things you have said about Dawes and I will state categorically IMO  it was the right decision not to offer another contract. I will counter all the positives you have mentioned about Dawes ( although I believe they are all valid) and say he was recruited first and foremost to be play as a power forward, take marks and kick goals and that basis alone it did not work out for the club or Dawes.

I think the broader point is what we see from the outside. He looked like he trained hard, he put in when he couldn't play and was in the leadership group which speaks to me that he was a respected member of the team. He did not earn a new contract but he did earn a thanks for your efforts.

Absolutely, he didn't deliver on field, for a number of reasons, so it's definitely the right time to part company, but in a respectful way, he's had a crack and not quite been up to the challenge.

Abe, I have a similar opinion about having played AFL footy to be able to make a comment on a players ability or lack of, but only if you are going to denigrate or make derogatory comments about the said players ability

Those of us who have played footy at any level have all missed targets, missed a tackle, shirked a contest, dropped a mark etc so we can't exactly make derogatory comments along those lines, although it is ok to say if you have an opinion that a player is not upto AFL standard,  but expect to be asked to explain why

I was really looking forward to watching Dawes play alongside Jesse Hogan and torment defences, unfortunately it didn't happen very often, Chris gave everything each time he played, but like Nut I know why he wasn't offered another contract

Definitely, but i think the line can be a bit blurry between the two sometimes, every poster rates players differently and i reckon every coach would rate players slightly differently so it really comes down to the individuals delivery, if they are respectful, i am not so concerned with the content.

a good example in my opinion is the debate on the Wagner thread, i felt you, i and others had a spirited debate without resorting to name calling towards posters or players

Well said. You could add to your list "...and have posted anonymously on an internet forum". It's always disappointing when anonymous posters choose aggressive and unnecessarily abusive terminology to criticise players, or, for that matter, other posters.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
