You feel sorry for the Demons today do ya?

A part of Melbourne that has had little joy given to it over the journey has finally gotten some and some of you blokes can only mope about how it wasn't us? As though it is somehow part of our f***ing birthright.

Maybe it's because we haven't deserved to win a flag and that we are soft as a club.

Come to any game day thread on here and as soon as the tide turns somewhat, wrist slashing starts and some of the most ridiculous hyperbole you will ever hear will start flowing. As though our god given right to the premiership should come via a 22-0 season with winning margins by no less than 60 points as a benchmark.

Ross Oakley was right if the attitude of the Melbourne FC is indicative of some of the peanuts on here, then we are the club of the silver spoon. As long as we think we are owed a flag because of who were are, we will never win one.

They might have a Chelsea-like run which could be considered a golden era for their club, but the lack of premierships doesn't give them that same aura. 2 flags to 12 from us. If we win a flag, we equal Hawthorn and remain only behind Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon.

Today it felt like Sydney winning was more of a fairytale to prevent an nevitable new premiership dog dynasty getting 'an early one' with new rules exploits.

Oh, this is absolute rubbish.

Further, the only team in the comp on the verge of a dynasty is GWS. And I'd much prefer a club that's been through such a drought win one.

Bevo a flag I'm 2nd season vs 10 wins in 3rd season ..  Not having a crack at Roos as I'm sure our lust was a busker case .. But at some stage players need to take the responsibility & don't expect everything to be perfect @ a club!

A teeny tiny vicarious silver lining regarding 'records'?...

Adelaide's '98 win from 5th now means nothing, as does their '97 win as the only team to win 4 finals to achieve it, which was MUCH less creditable than the 'dogs, coming in that brief, not-lamented finals system where they got 2 home finals from 4th position.

As far as results go,this is the best thing to happen for our group.

Seeing the dogs give their all and for that to be good enough means we just have to find the intensity as a group and we are going places,despite what history,conventional wisdom and the media might say about our chances.

"The secret to the Dogs success is something simple.

Beat the teams below you on the ladder (outside the eight)... have an upset win or two against the top eight.... make the finals and who knows

Until we can achieve number 1 on that list (beating the teams outside the 8) we are going nowhere

No more.. we are too young or too tired....."

We'll defeat all the teams outside the 8 (or most of them) when we're good enough to do so. 

At the moment we're not good enough to do so - our list is developing regardless of what the club tells us or what the club has told us in the past.  The best test is the eye test - your own eyes.

We've got about 6 - 8 consistently good performers with another 5 or 6 who can get to that level.  6 - 8 consistently good performers falls short in terms of how many wins a team can get.  Finals are a small possibility with that number of decent players but a flag is virtually impossible.

Plus, a team needs a progressive, innovative top-line coach.  Let's hope that Goodwin is that coach.

The tired excuse for our last two rounds is the most lame I have ever heard. That was only a diplomatic excuse from Roos. The real unsaid  reasons will have been somewhat more scathing.  Most of our wins were front running junkets and we only won one hard fought game and that was in round one. We had many soft losses where we folded meekly when early pressure was applied.

It is what is missing. look at the lists thiers is full of rookies and late draft picks Ours is full of top 20 picks and we are no where near them in competiveness and pure desire to win. Ps also they are still a very young team. So no excuses now for Goodwin and the list.

Liberatore and Hunter were father/son, Jackson Macrae was pick 6, Boyd was pick 1, Stringer was pick 5, Boyd and Morris have been off the rookie list for about 10 years with a couple of hundred games experience each, Roughead and Dunkely were in 20/30's and of course Bontempelli was pick 4 but like any list it has been moulded with players traded/drafted/rookied from all levels, similar to what MFC are trying to do

True although look at the Doggies in 2014. Won 7 games, scraped home twice against Melbourne who finished equal last. They could very well have only won 3-4 games if not for some very lucky wins and goals against us, Richmond and the Pies.

Our 2016 has been weird, but so were 2014 and 2015. in 2014 we led in the last quarter in 10 games, but only won 4. In 2015 we once again finished the season poorly. In 2016 we had our highest win tally in a decade but you could argue it was still an underachieving year considering the losses to Essendon, St Kilda x2 and Carlton. 

Do we win those types of games in 2017? Natural progression and improvement of the list suggests yes. At this stage we are actually ahead of where the Bulldogs were in 2014, and they were tipped for the spoon by some commentators in 2015. 

My point being that on any given day, any team can beat any other team, regardless of ladder position. It's simply a case of believing and knowing you can win, which this team still struggles with. The Bulldogs were not a very good side in 2014 and they won a flag in 2016. We have had an above-average year and probably should have made the finals if not for some brain fades here and there. The Dogs were much further away than a few brain fades in 2014. 

I wouldn't bet on Melbourne making the finals in 2017 but if they don't, I think it's a massive , HUGE failure by the team's leaders and the coaching department.
