If Setterfield and Bowes are not as good as McLuggage and McGrath, it won't happen. GC or GWS would let Bombers take one and they would then see one of the Mc's fall to them.

With pick 3 GWS are in the box seat. Only problem is they want McGrath and Bombers or Lions could stop that party,

I could see Bowes being bid on. He's very good and Gold Coast have pick 4 (and want pick 2). They would probably have to match the local boy at that pick. I don't think it will happen as it's a bit too risky but it's very low risk.

Setterfield isn't as good and the Giants would just let him go and laugh at Essendon's bid.

Both Essendon and us had the chance last year to put some serious heat on GWS with picks 4,5, 6 and 8 for Hopper and Kennedy but we didn't risk it.

ahern did his acl for the second time and pickett hurt his lisfranc earlier this year and hasn't amounted to anything thus far as a result. good luck to them at north and blues respectively.

It's a real shame because both are great guys and super talented, but because they don't have the exposed form they don't attract anywhere near the interest they should.

I reckon Essendon would be nuts not to trade pick 1 this year, they could get pick 3 and something else from the Giants for that upgrade and still get the bloke they want.

Rumour is they want to get pick 5 from Carlton for Marchbank and on-trade 3 and 5 to the Dons for pick #1 Not sure the dons want that but 2 top 5 picks vs pick 1 its a hell of a choice.

First round picks are like confetti to GWS. Pick 1 though might unlock the next Jesse Hogan for them.

Certainly one from left field if it eventuates.

Hawthorn may try and make it work for them I guess and work it into either the Mitchell or O'Meara trades.

Sam Mitchell is being interviewed on SEN.  Said it could help Hawthorn if he played somewhere else.  Sounded like he would leave.

Reluctant to say it but purple does have excellent contacts - he is usually right.

TBH, I wish he was coming to us - we desperately need a confident on-field general.  A few months ago I posted it would be good to get Hodge a a playing coach, if his contract wasn't renewed.  Mitchell would fit the playing coach role perfectly and would be excellent for our players.  His on-field leadership is unsurpassed.

Bit sad that a 4 time premiership player, soon to be brownlow medallist and former captain is getting squeezed out to fit in 2 players that won't take them to a flag...

get on the phone MFC, offer him 2 years and a transition into coaching.

The guy is 33, has just won his 5th B & F and they ask him to give up being a one club player and help them out by playing with WC for a year or 2.

Clearly they won't get much for him from WC, other than salary cap space.

I think this is the sort of thing that will spread the cracks in Hawthorn's culture.

It's a terrible thing to do to Mitchell and deprives him of being a one club player and playing more games for his club, not to mention uprooting the family.

This would have to be the modern day equivalent to Barassi leaving Melbourne IMO.  Though still not as big.

I'm guessing you didn't hear the interview with him then? He sounded really happy about going to WC.

Its worth listening to the interview.  He had been thinking about it for a while and only discussed it with non-ball people.  Didn't think that Hodge was even aware of it yet.

Coaching appeals to him.  Would only consider 1 or 2 clubs and the pull of working with Simpson was a big factor for him.

Sounded to be as much of his doing.  Highly mature and dignified man and interview.

As I said above I wish he was coming to us - he is exactly what we need at our stage of development.

Edit: he said it is a win for Hawthorn, WCE and the Mitchell family.

He said he has spoken to WC about coaching after footy a couple of years ago and has told Hawthorn.

He and Clarko have had a chat and of he is going to go and coach over there he might want to go and maybe play a year or two first its up to him .

The wife is happy to go now as the kids will be starting school next year so saves uprooting them later , the last thing this does is spread cracks in their culture if anything it shows they look after their people.

What draft pick would Mitchell be worth? He's only got 1 year left.  I can't see how it's going to dramatically improve their draft position to get Tom Mitchell and O'Meara.

If you listened to the interview with Mitchell on SEN, your comments couldn't be further from the truth. Clearly Mitchell has a strong relationship with both Clarkson and Simpson, and the idea was raised 12 months ago. Mitchell is up to level 3 of his coaching certificate, and it's clearly his long term goal. Unlike Buckley, Hird and Voss, he would think it best to cut his teeth with assistant coaching at another club.

Mitchell also explained that the timing was perfect as his kids are about to start school. You could actually feel the excitement in his voice about the opportunity at WCE, but he equally said he'd be happy to stay at Hawthorn.

This isn't a James McDonald type scenario.

Pick 33 (or next year's second rounder) and a player (or WC may trade to get a pick around about 18-25), and it improves their position by freeing up cash and getting them another pick.

It's a genius move and will be a win-win for all involved.

This is why Clarkson is the best in the business.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
