That story was "supplemented" a little later on the same program with the suggestion that the player in question is a 4x Premiership player aged around 30-31. I'm not sure who of the limited pool of players fits that criteria. Mitchell and Burgoyne are too old. Perhaps Lewis or Birchall? (I expect Roughead is also in that window but I assume for other reasons it's not him.)

The only 4 time premiership player around that age is Lewis & Roughhead (but obviously he is ruled out). Birchall is 28.

Cyril!  Ha ha, yeah that won't happen

Hawks will have to get rid of some good players if they are to recruit Mitchell and OMeara.  they need to get some picks but we dont have any so not we will help (assuming 27 goes for Hibberd)

sounds like BS to me

Jason Dunstall is well and truly refreshed but I'm not sure he fits our needs :pj:

I think we might be surprised with the MFC being more active than most anticipate!

I think our 2017 1st should definitely be in play, we should be looking for deals every year with the future 1st to stay ahead of the curve.

I would take Langford in a heartbeat, especially as we should get him at a fairly cheap price.

Hopefully the Hawks have good short-term memory and look after us given we did the same for them when they acquired Fitzy...(yes, that is sarcasm).

Hey I'd love to get earlier picks but you have to either give up players (with actual currency), future picks or d o some creative accounting with an academy club (who want and need the points)...

so what do you suggest?

I don't know what we've got to give, but I'm hoping we could get back into somewhere from late 1st Rnd into the 2nd Rnd.

We got pick 94 for Fitzy. Happy to get Langford for a pick in the nineties.

Daniel Wells officially off to Collingwood to try and save Buckley's career.

North are bleeding out.. badly.. They have lost a total of 1797 games of experience so far. Long way back from here. Can see them finishing bottom 4 next year.

Three year deal worth nearly two million dollars. Wells is a good player when fit, but he turns 32 at the start of next year. Add Chris Manye reportedly being offered at four year deal on similar coin and you have a stand-up routine suitable for any comedian in the country.

And they will probably still beat us at the Dome of death.

I reckon this is a really bad decision by the Pies, Wells and Mayne are not going to be in their next premiership side, i reckon they have a pretty good young group, and they should be working on that

It's a Buckley decision, not a Collingwood decision IMO. Bucks knows if he doesn't make finals next year he's out the door. It's a bad move for the club long term for the exact reasons you point out, and is all about self-preservation by their coach.

you'd hope the board who have to sign off on these contracts would be able to see that, which to me makes it a whole club decision, to me it's throwing 2-3 million dollars down the drain, no guarantees that Wells will stay fit, or that Mayne will have any impact at all.

I can see them scraping into the top 8 .. & preserving Bucks' career at the pies for at least one more year. But yeah I can see it backfiring, similar to what happened to Richmond. Recruiting recycled players, under the false impression their window was open, falling short and then things going pear shaped.

It's clearly not a good decision for the future of their club, as you've pointed out, so the only possible reason for signing Wells and (likely) Mayne is for immediate (and most likely mediocre) success, which would be enough for Buckley to not be fired. Collingwood as a club would suffer in a big way if it is forced to admit how wrong they got it with Buckley, a legend of their club.

Buckley is desperate to save his job and make finals next season, poor recruiting for the short term only. Wreaks of desperation. I couldn't be happier.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
