Queensland footy seems to be going well.

GC's problem was dumping Bluey, who was well liked by the playing group. Prestia was gone long before this season and that coaching change may very well have played a part (although I suspect it was a combination of the go home factor *and* the party factor plaguing GC lifestyle). Brisbane has suffered the same fate by giving a job to one of the boys...twice.

Both clubs need a Leigh Matthews- or Paul Roos-type figure to completely change the culture and rebuild from the ground up. How Brisbane can go from one of the most revered clubs with a strong culture and fantastic drafting history to an utter basket case in 10 years is astonishing. And all at the hands of past players who helped build that strong culture.

he may not be able to pick his club, but whatever club gc17 picks he doesn't have to accept either

if he goes to draft he can set his own price and not talk to any other club. stacked in his favour. fa not required

a lot more than Luke Ball who just crapped on the Saints who got nothing.

That's not entirely true. My wife's a St Kilda supporter, so I remember the Ball departure pretty well.

Collingwood offered their 2nd round pick (25 from memory) and choice of either Nathan Brown (Saints lacked key tall defenders) or Sharrod Wellingham (Saints lacked run).

St Kilda played hard ball and lost. No sympathy for them.

More to the point, Ball was a great servant of their club and a former captain and i could never understand why that decision was made from there end, they were playing blokes well below him in their side the next year.

If we were to make a play for Jaegar, i suspect the best we could offer would be something along the lines of 2017 1st Round pick with Trengove & Garland for Jaegar & a 4th Round Pick.

I suspect they'll get better offers.

IF we were interested,  would 2017 first pick plus Garland, Wagner and maybe Newton or ANB be fair. GC are losing two mids. It would free up salary cap space for us as well.

I've always thought that there should be one team named QUEENSLAND. At least it can garner the half-hearted support of the entire state rather than one city, so that Nth Queenslanders and Gold Coastians can get behind the team that plays all over the state. As it stands, people from Townsville or Cairns are meant to cheer for Gold Coast or Brisbane? Gold Coast people don't want to support the city of Brisbane. It's a mess and the support that comes from good team performances is only concentrated in small area's rather than the entire state.  The Queensland Lions has an air of class and royalty to it.

You can discount everything I said if you think there is room for two teams, but i disagree. Failure in QLD is a disaster for the AFL's bottom line

If Jaeger simply didn't nominate for the draft would he then become a delisted free agent allowing him to go wherever he wants?

No, he hasn't been delisted and is not a free agent

But i mean if the Suns don't accept an offer in trade week, and he doesn't nominate for the draft, surely there would be a point where his contract ends and he's delisted?

Nope, or anyone who wanted to leave would do that. He can either be traded or nominate for the national or preseason draft. It is the only way he can end up on another AFL club list

I think the delisted free agency period is before the last of the drafts

Would absolutely love him at the club.

But what on earth could we offer that would satisfy GC?

To please them it'd have to something like next year's first round pick plus Salem/Oliver and perhaps an exchange of later picks.

But I wouldn't want to part with either of those two.

Fark I want him.

I dont know the exact rule in this situation but he would be delisted by the end of his contact (oct 31)

Being delist he would need to meet the definition of a free agent (which he will not)

The only way he could be picked up then is via a draft either national or pre season

This could be interesting. GC have said they will take the best deal (Melbourne based club), and that O'Meara won't be nominating a desired club of choice. If O'Meara does have his heart set on going some place, and GC do not facilitate that - he could end up in the pre-season draft. That is a possibility. Especially when dealing with Essendon having that first selection. This will be interesting because GC will want a lot more than most clubs will be willing to offer.

I wonder if this attitude will also extend to Prestia?

Aaron VandenBerg, Colin Garland and 2017 first round pick for O'meara

rumour has it the Suns have a strong preference for established players over picks.

Gold Coast want players not picks.

Salem, vandenBerg etc aren't going to cut it.

i don't want us to trade our future potential on a bloke who hasn't played in two seasons.

I fully expect him to go PSD #1 to the Peptides. It's a disgraceful state of affairs.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
