To be able to notice potential draftees, clubs need to have a group of talent spotters. I vaguely recall something being written or said about Melbourne not having the resources or structure in place in the Daniher and Bailey years (and maybe the Neeld years) to have a properly functioning team of spotters. (Terry Wallace has also talked about how amateurish Richmond was in this regard when he was coach there.) I expect one of the great improvements under Peter Jackson has been a better structure to put talent spotting on a sounder footing. Drafting players such as Hunt, vandenBerg and Wagner are the results of otherwise unknown players being noticed by the right people.

I have heard we never actually sent a talent spotter to watch Liam Jurrah. We just heard other clubs were into him.

Spot on La Dee. 

I remember it being said that back in the glory years the Dees had the advantage that young kids not only wanted to play with the great MFC and play at the MCG but we also had Jim Caldwell and a whole team of spotters in the country and metropolitan areas watching kids play.  At the time, we were doing so more effectively than any other club, until we became complacent and lazy in the early to mid 60s. The club was warned by Norm Smith but took no notice. Also at that time other clubs (such as RFC) suddenly realized that money was a primary motivator and got the jump on the Dees who still thought that players would want to come to the Dees irrespective. 

Hopefully after 50 years the wheel has turned and young kids will not only want to play for a successful  MFC but we can compete in the money stakes.

I heard a group of older ladies, heavily on the wines, screaming "Go Mike!" every time he got the ball.  Then giggling furiously. 

 

If I was part of the playing group, he'd be called Mike for sure.

Assume they do a lot of work looking live and at vision, Jason Taylor told me Hunt was first noticed as he/they had gone to watch Salem and Kelly

I also believe because we have ex players and coaches who still have a good relationship with the club spread all over the country, the club gets a lot of heads up about a particular player either at junior or State level, believe VDB first came to notice this way

One of his uncles was in a team I played in and we named him 'Yorrick'. 

His younger brother, another uncle to Jayden, we called 'Youngc'.
