Surprised Garland got in the bests. I know it was in only on tv but i paid particular attention to his performance and thought his disposal was really not up to scratch.

Casey has been a terrific alignment from a financial standpoint over the past 7 years. A vfl standalone is worth a few hundred thousand dollars a season to run. Given our financial issues it has been a great success for us to develop our kids at Casey without the crippling overheads of a standalone. Sometimes we forget just how bad the mfc was, the casey alignment has been better than people are making out.

With the way the Melbourne football club is now positioned a standalone vfl team looks almost certain for us in the upcoming few seasons. We should be thankful for the casey alignment and enjoy another year or two of it while we have it.

Footy is pretty important but we can't ignore the bigger picture longer term...

Jnr if putting our own reserves team up helps our boys to align better with the style/method and basic "team" parameters we are trying to instill at senior level, and it happens to help put us one step closer to some silverware in a shorter time frame, I think it would build a much bigger supporter base than simply being aligned with a small cog (Scorps) within the Casey growth region.

There is merit in what you say but you can't turn these things on and off. There is a lot of planning goes into them.

I think Casey under Plapp are playing the style of football that the seniors are using, certainly more so than under the last coach. The game on Saturday was the worst I have seen them play this year although they had a shocker against Port in a practice match pre-season. They will bounce back next week no doubt.

I'll take your word on that Samael. Can only hope they were completely off page on Saturday. At the same time the track was very unforgiving but it was the same for both sides.

It's worth noting that Col Garland said in his on stage interview with Robbo said it was the worst ground conditions he's ever played on and that it was borderline unplayable. 

It sounds as if it was not played in an environment comparable enough to AFL conditions to be able to draw any inferences from it. I'd pretty much just disregard the result including the form of the players who played in it.

Collingwood were very fierce at the contest. The ground may have been poor but they played it much better.

I guess my point is I don't really give a fig who was better or who won. I'm a MFC supporter not a Casey supporter, so if there's nothing to be gained that is relevant to AFL experience then I'm not too fussed. It's as relevant as it would be if we'd lined up against the Melbourne Storm in a rugby game and lost (okay - that's an exaggeration but you see the point).

I think what you are missing Nasher is the Casey team is our reserves.

That is the way I look at it.

I can  fortunately get to a few games and enjoy watching similar to many moons ago when they used to be the curtain raiser.

If you goto a game, and head out to the 1/4 and 3/4 time huddles, Plapp is always the last one into the huddle after the assistant coaches. The reason is that Brendan McCartney is always the one that has him aside and having a quiet word in his ear right before he joins the huddle. Happened when I was there on Saturday, and every single break I've seen at this year at games I've been to, and same last year. Quite often Goodwin always has a chat to him post huddle, so I think they're coming from a similar coaching philosophy down there at Casey

It was a day that had only 1 real skill that relates to AFL football and that was contested ball. Maybe mental resilience as well. 

Kicking, handballing, running patterns were pretty much out the window. And it was so wet and muddy that if you couldn't tackle you never will so that didn't really count. 

That said, from the half I watched on TV it was disappointing that a few of our players didn't adapt better so I hope they learnt from it. I'd like to have seen ANB be more effective around the contest given it's his strength. Hulett could've contested better. And Garlett was down right poor given the ball was on the ground for so long.

Not much you can do about a truckload of rain but hopefully the MFC/Casey are always working to improve the ground conditions. I'd like to develop our players in better conditions if possible! Maybe some drainage work needed in the off season and more shelter from the wind is needed.
