Copuchas 763 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 I see that Access All Areas and 360 both picked up the Garlett non-contest footage (Q3) and took him to task for shirking. I was watching from the members and my take was that the ball coming across (from Dawes?) was somewhat of a floater and Garlett ended up under it and didn't compete as he was no chance. The 2D footage / angle doesn't afford the viewer the ability to see the extent of the gap between Garlett and the incoming ball. What was everyone else's take?

What was everyone else's take? when I saw it happen live, I have to admit.. it wasn't a great look. however, in garletts defense, it definitely was a floater off the boot & I wouldn't have thought Garlett was the type to shirk a contest as much as that. I gave him the benefit of the doubt. The media certainly wern't as forgiving. There's no doubt though he had a dog of a day.
MadAsHell 4,217 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Agree with both above comments. He needs to respond on QB however, otherwise may be given a VFL run.
Forest Demon 4,681 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Maybe because he is one of my favourites, but at the time I thought he just misjudged the floating kick more than anything. But as was mentioned above, regardless of this incident, he had no impact whatsoever, and hasn't for a few games in a row now. Needs a big one on Monday.
praha 11,267 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 He's having a bad month. Conditions didn't suit him, which sucks because wet weather football should suit a guy like him. He'll bounce back.

No doubt that he needs to respond. The really disappointing contest was the one with Gibson where Petracca put it out in front and Jeffy overran it and then played for a free with somewhat of an insipid effort. Having said that, technically the free kick should have been there.
Ted Lasso 19,586 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 I thought it was just a bit of a brain fart to be honest and wasn't to concerned, every footballer has at least one of those in their career. Jeffy is a bit down on form but he's a very dangerous player and he is still putting defensive pressure on, i expect him to really make up for it this weekend against the filth
binman 44,792 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 I reckon he plain misjudged it. He had 3 mtres on his opponent and wouls have known that. If he was going to shirk a contest he would have more of an effort to disguise it. That said it was a big stuff up. It ruined a terrific bit of ball movement and should have been a sure goal as if he had marked its (as he should have) he had a player wide, free and running to goal. Critical point in the match too. Whilst talking about garlett why on earth would the conditions of not suited a crumbing small forward?
Undeeterred 3,127 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 it wasn't even a contest - nobody else was anywhere near him. He flat out misjudged it, which fits with his horrid, horrid play the rest of the day.
monoccular 17,760 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 I saw it only on TV but never for a moment even considered that he shirked - he misjudged a miskick. But I agree with the many who have said he certainly needs to lift next week or risk a trip to Casey.
Cranky Franky 2,270 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 He's just signed a new contract & unfortunately a lot of players drop form when that happens. A couple of years ago Lynden Dunn was in career best form during contract negotiations but his form dropped away after he had signed. Aaron Davey was another one who played his best footy leading up to contract negotiations.

He deserves a whack for his recent form, was this particular one warrented? maybe not, but hopefully the negative attention gets some better output. Either way from where i was sitting it looked like it went 3m above his head and he just misjudged it completely...
loges 6,767 Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Jeff seemed to me to have no confidence at all when attacking the ball, even when fairly clear, have a look at his body language. Was second guessing himself the whole game
stuie 7,374 Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Think this is all pretty tough on Jeffy. Sure his form has been average for a few weeks, but if you were at the game two things were clear: 1) This "incident" was simply a poor kick/poor judgment from Jeff. Was not a "squib" or a "shirk", the ball and the player were just nowhere near each other. 2) Jeffy tried hard all day, it just didn't bounce his way. He kept running and trying, gave second efforts, which is more than can be said for Hogan on Saturday.
M_9 2,216 Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 I had a good view of the kick from behind and it looked to be a metre or so above his head. I doubt very much that he shirked it. It was never going to be a 'contest'. Jeffy is a confidence player. I'm tipping 4 goals against the Pies. I've backed him for first goal three times, but missed the week he nailed it. I'll put $5 on him and Jack again this week.
Bring-Back-Powell 15,535 Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 He re-signed before the Port game and proceeded to play his career worst 2 games for Melbourne (and possible Carlton). Surely no correlation between the 2....

Surely no correlation between the 2.... could be correlation between the whole teams worst game and then wet and slippery conditions non-condusive to a small slick player like him. I dont think it excuses him but no need to claim it's his contract this soon. If he is bad the next 3/4 weeks maybe its time to start asking questions.
DemonLad5 1,642 Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 He'll bounce back. He loves playing the Pies too
dazzledavey36 56,283 Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Wayne Carey i think last night mentioned that theres a possible chance as he went for the mark he got called out last minute because he turned to look behind him as if someone was going to mark it. I said in another thread, Collingwood fans hate Garlett purely on the base thag he always runs rings around them and plays really well. I cannot wait to see Jeffy turn it on come monday in front of a big crowd. Im tipping he'll kick 3.

Palace Dees 2,421 Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Like many, Jeff is is confidence player. He has been amazingly consistent over several years. He generally chases and has 2nd/3rd and 4th efforts. His position has been called starvation corner over the years (although in the modern game who knows) and it's no coincidence that the few that excel in that role are seen as exceptional talents (eg Rioli & Betts). Play him the next 2 weeks and then we have a bye and he can have a mental break. I'm sure he will be back firing very soon. Only if his effort drops should any action need be considered within the next month. Jeff has got a few credits in the bank and we as supporters should be backing him. FFS if we start listening to Barrett and Lloyd then WE have lost the plot!
