Defence was rubbish today with both Garland and OMac less than poor. Both need to go for next week. Bring in Dunn and Frost. In the back half the only one that looked competent was Jetta. Bugg either tightens up on his man or play for Casey.

Midfield was a shadow of what it has been in games this season. A hell of a lot of passengers standing around letting others do it. Where was Kennedy? Tyson? Newton? ANB? Petracca? Harmes? All went missing and were hardly sighted. Viney completely covered in the first term. Jones tried to play a lone hand. Vince popped up a few times....too few... Stretch was there a outs but as an outside player you need others to get the, ball and there was no one there doing that. Delivery into the forward 50 from our midfield was dreadful.

Th forwards kicked badly but got bad delivery and not often enough. Kent might enjoy a run with Casey.

midfield selection. Start from scratch. A blank piece of paper and see what we have got in the cupbpard.

Jones tries hard but his disposal is often poor. Bombs it long to the opposition or hand passes to a player under pressure.

Our issue with early on in our goal kicking. If we were 7.2 (what we should have been), instead of 2.7, we would have rolled them. They would have been down and out and we would have been able to ski downhill. We had a bad day in front of the sticks and that hasnt happened this year so far. We are not good enough not to take our shots.

I know that OMac was in our bottom 10 today (Kennedy, Newton, Garland, ANB, Tyson, Harmes, Garlett, Kent) but I don't see what we are loosing playing him at the moment. He leaves his opponent well and impacts the contest. He is not good one on one yet because he still needs to develop but he has a future unlike Garland.

Hunt continues to do the right things and impact contests. Gawn did a lot around the ground which was the issue in the last few weeks. Hogan had a great game and wont kick that badly for the rest of the year. Watts is getting better and better. We have a long way to go and we should be winning these games (and St Kilda and Essendon). But we are at least developing.

Developing what? The ability to lose to better teams. We've had that for a long time.

Roos: We were terrible defensively. Young guys get energised by scoring but top defensive teams win premiership

It's true. Its great scoring goals but we also need to crack down on the defence. Once we scored today they seemed to easily get a goal a minute later.

Re-sign Jetta ASAP. Forget finals. I never thought it was a realistic expectation, but cetatinly it gave/gives the players something to aim for. We have improved but, if you cannot beat teams above/ahead of us then the improvemen is incremental. Which is how the season is now heading for us. We need to again get time into the young ones BUT also see who will stand up in games like this. Way way to many passengers again against a team we don't match up well against. Diamond defence is cubic zirconia. Let's get a plan B at worst. I never expected a win but hoping for a better performance. Back to the pool here in Bali

I've got a great idea,it's pretty revolutionary though.

MAN UP!!!

If the opposition have the ball in their hands in their back line, and say you are playing in the wing, then how about going with your man instead if guarding space five metres away from him?

Hunt played his best game for the club, which was pleasing. Jetta was also really good, although a little rusty early on. Omac was also decent, despite being beaten a few times one-on-one when he shouldn't have been. Watts did a couple of nice things. Everyone else? Yuck. If you looked at Gawn's statistics, you'd say he played an AA game, but if you watched the match, you'd say he didn't impact it enough around the stoppages. He certainly wasn't aided by his midfield though, who were beyond poor.

Perspective people .. Port have 47 ave more games than us & ups & downs are expected?

What annoys me the most is playing our home game away!

Understand Indegenious round etc but is this a game we sold?

Question is there no more home ground advantage???

I have been asking the same question Hoges. It was the same with the Saints game, our home game at Etihad? I hope we are getting some decent coin for these losses. I would rather they played the home games at the G and have a real go at winning them.

Apart from first 15 minutes, we were never in the game. No excuses for venue, weather, selection, or 6 day break. We didn't give enough (across the board). The players own this loss, not the coaches. Our blokes looked second rate. We have gained credibility in the Media in the last month but this was an unacceptable loss. I'm angry about the overall effort. I don't think we have moved far from 2015.

I will be so annoyed if adelaide loses tonight. Even though we didnt play like a top 8 team today we have shown this season we can play good football adn todays stupid loss could have stopped us from being in the 8 again. I will say it again. That essendon loss will come back to haunt us.

Next 3 weeks is a huge test for the club and I hope we can stand up against these good clubs, more thinking hawthorn and sydney.

An unbelievably frustrating game. It looked so, so similar to the St Kilda loss. We looked flat early, we butchered the ball, we were beaten to it by a side who wanted it more (but who has no right to be classified as any better or stronger than we are on 2016 form) and we conceded too many goals out the back as a result.

Far too many passengers today, starting yet again with the two principal problems - Kent and Harmes. When we win they look great but when we are down they are, without fail, absolute liabilities. Harmes should be dropped, that's three weeks in a row now that he has been poor (three of his four goals last week came in fourth-quarter junk time).

Poor selection, poor goal kicking, poor leadership (Garland reverted to old-Garland at times) and a lack of hunger combined for a flat performance that rankles me as much as any other so far this year.

All down to the players. Not lazy, but as Roos commentated, it's so much more fun playing attacking footy than putting in the hard work that solid defence requires. Perhaps one or two of them could do with a rest, but that's not why we lost.

Positives here and there, good to see Max back to a bit of decent form, but otherwise ...

I'm not sure I understand the poor selection argument? Did we not look slow? Trengove and Grimes are not the answer if that's the problem.

Im OK with putting some trust into the kids as it allows us to see what we've got. I reckon some blokes have shown some good signs. They can't do it week in and week out yet but in 3 years they will - and to be fair to half our side they were giving away big game numbers to the opposition today.

What would you have them do when the ball is coming in without any pressure at all?  Nothing that happened today was their fault.  Many of Port's goals came from easy kicks over the back of the press, not one on one contests or from giving away a free kick.

Wiseblood, what I would have them do is to be a hell of a lot more aware of where the opposition players are and where they are running. Yes, they kicked a lot of their goals over the back but our defence was poor when they were trying to get the ball out of our defensive 50. That is what I am mainly critical of.

Simplistic crap. The slowness comes from workrate, effort, hunger. It doesn't come from footspeed. You only need to look at the GC and Brisbane games to see that the same players who played today are fast when they want to be and, more importantly, when we're on we are a fast attacking side.

Port were very good at keeping the ball in their half of the ground, no argument there.  But that's not down to a Garland, for example.  Sticking Frost down there wouldn't have changed a thing.  Dunn is a better kick but, again, it wouldn't have changed anything.

Changes need to be made to our younger brigade up the ground.  Harmes, Kennedy and Kent would all be in the gun for their minimal impact and poor pressure up the ground.

BS, been available for a few games and you have made that assessment? Rising Star last week. McCartin has played 10 games in nearly one and a half seasons.

Turn it up. Rubbish call. But they probably made the right decision for their list. They needed a FF. Petracca will be the better player though.

Wiseblood, have a look at the replay and you will see 4 or 5 occasions where Garland fumbles, fails to keep his feet or misses a pass to a teammate. At least 3 of those lead to Port goals. That has nothing to do with what might or might not behave img in the midfield. Similar with OMac. He was a shade better than Garland.

I do not see Frost and Dunn being any worse than these two.

To clarify - im talking about structural speed. Our game plan is built around winning contestant ball, then being clean around the contestant, and then spreading really quickly. As you said that's why when we are on we are a fast attacking side. If it was just about hunger then both Trengrove and Grimes would be playing. Legspeed is critical to how we play. No amount of desire gets you into space to be able to run through a zone.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
