Anyone else noticed how much Roos and MFC press are talking about our "undefeated" start to the year? "First loss of 2016", "Unbeaten for 4 games so far"... That kind of thing. What a load of rubbish. Next we'll be hearing about the ghosts of the past and just trying to be competitive again... Sick of the spin, it's weak and gets us nowhere. NAB games mean nothing now. Don't try and sell us.

We will NEVER make a line in the sand, because we pussyfoot around these sort of performances with our excuses and weak mindedness.

Get tough with them Roosy, the cuddles you talked about should have stopped a long time ago as should these kind of losses.

Can you believe the Demons lost to the Bombers? Of course you can. In fact, how did any of us not believe that, even for a second?

Essendon as a club are a lot of things but they’ve got pride. When the world is closing in on them they march on the ‘G and defeat a side despite half their seniors not being able to play.

You can argue their problems are self inflicted (they are) but so are Melbourne’s. At least the Bombers say ‘screw that we’re going to fight’. Melbourne’s players said ‘gee, this is all a bit hard’.

The thing I admire about the Bombers is they fight. They fight even when they sometimes shouldn’t but it does mean they never give up. It sort of the point of a footy team.

They really should have won by more too if Joe Daniher could kick straight. It wasn’t a fluke either, don’t buy the Melbourne excuses, which we’ll look at in a moment. Essendon just worked harder, wanted it more and played better.

That’s the beauty of footy. You have 22 all having a go and you’ll challenge anyone. If you’re lucky enough to be playing Melbourne you’ll win too.

Paul Roos offered three excuses after the loss, lets look at them:

Players were ‘tired’

So I just checked and it’s round two. ROUND TWO. No, not round 22.

Apparently these ‘athletes’ are too tired to beat a team who had 11 senior players suspended this year.

If only we had a highly paid senior coach who’d been there a few years to get the right fitness levels into them. How the media pack didn’t burst out laughing when he said this is beyond me. Beyond.

I must have also missed the bit where Essendon got a bye week in round one too and were fresh as a daisy.

Roos said they chose the wrong side, conveniently throwing Angus Brayshaw under the bus while doing so.

Considering Melbourne currently have two senior coaches, I would have thought this could have been handled by someone.

Melbourne lacked ‘respect’ for Essendon

Why would the Demons disrespect anyone? They haven’t won two games in a row since 2011. They are the laughing stock of the league and have been for a decade. They don’t even respect themselves.

Paul Roos, ladies and gentlemen, worth every million.

It makes you wonder why Demons fans continue to spend our hard inherited on this club.

Agree.  We are 1-1, not 4-1 and to treat the one win as being anything more than pretty lucky is a oversell.  We were lucky they kicked poorly and extremely lucky they didn't bring the same intensity they showed against Geelong this week. GWS beating Geelong this week doesn't make our win against them look any better, just luckier.

If our players continue to take confidence from things that they shouldn't be taking it from, they will remain fragile.

It's no wonder the AFL keep scheduling Dees against the Bombers just once as away games:..."don't worry you Bombers, you just keep wearing your guernsey v the Dees, let them worry about alternate strips....."

The biggest threat is that rd 2 will be the Bummers first home game, the walk to G, lots of past and present players etc. It will be a huge game for them.

A real danger game for us.

 

We had 2 tackles n the first 20 mins of this game after the coach said he wanted the team to play like maniacs.

5 tackles in the first quarter.

Our past 3 weeks have seen our first quarters:

Carlton 38 to us 8pts

North 46 to us 12pts

Dogs 51 to 2pts

That is 135pts to 22pts in the first quarters.

This 3 weeks is as bad as we have been in the past 8 years. The players are useless and are killing the club. I am sick of Roos [censored] footing around with guys like Lumumba, Dawes and Garland. Statements need to be made.

But Roos will probably tell them not to worry about the loss and will likely take them to the movies instead.

I make a prediction now that Round 23 against GWS will be the lowest crowd attendance in the clubs history. Who would want to watch these pea hearts.

Ha ha, I wrote this after the Carlton game where we were humiliated. Seems like nothing has been learned.

For Roos to say that 'players are tired' is an outrage. I also predicted back in February that this EFC game was a massive danger game as it was the EFC's home game, with a walk to the G and every past player invited etc.

Why is it that us fans can see it coming yet the players and the 'consultant' have NFI how to prepare a team for a game we are supposed to win.

This was never going to be a linear improvement.

We just endured a huge bump.

But trying to weave this into the 'Woe is Melbourne, failure is destiny' parable is pathetic.

If you believe that doomsday scenario then what are you doing here? What is the point of you being here?

If there is nothing that can be done then you are only commenting on the demise of something that many people don't think is dead.

So, your concerns are noted, but the rest of us have football to play.

NAB games do mean something, but not much. They mean a little when we have had so few wins in the last decade and a very small amount of confidence should be taken from those wins. However we've overestimated our form and perhaps taken way too much from those practice match wins. 

I'm considering this game an outlier in the bigger picture of this season - we're still learning how to win and it will take a while.

That's why I said the "mean nothing now". Our record is 1-1, not 4-1. Talking about us being undefeated so far this year is completely ridiculous and total media spin.

Looking back, there were warning signings when we scraped over the line against a severely undermanned Dogs in the NAB practice match.

Of the Dogs squad of 25 just 7 played round 1 against Freo.

Conversely, 20 of our players went on to play round 1.

How the media spin things and whether the supporters are optimistic or pessimistic, none of that should really matter.  It's how the football department internally review and process things.  They can't allow the players to get ahead of themselves.

We had a solid preseason but an objective view of the NAB games was that although we won them all, we were not all that good, let alone "terrific".

We won Round 1, BUT we were out played in many areas, made too many mistakes, GWS was far from at their best.  Basically we got away with one after playing one good quarter.

I look forward to the day that I don't typically fear losing games we should win.

Esendon's players are better than ours. They are bigger, faster, tackle more, take more marks and don't fumble the ball as much. We still have a very poor list. How can this change when the best players want to go to the top teams?

I'm hoping beyond hope that this game will spur us on and we'll play well against the Roos. No evidence to back up this dream though.

Well we need to start somewhere. I'm still convinced that some of these players are better than the level they are currently playing at. Effort, concentration and confidence play a huge part in the execution of these skills.

Apparently Matthew Lloyd and Terry Wallace have criticised Jesse's poor body language on field.  Bernie Vince has come to his defence saying the delivery was poor. 

Nonetheless, whatever one thinks of Lloyd and Wallace I think it is a good thing that the media stop treating Jesse like some sort of demigod and remind him he has a long way to go.  Then maybe the primadonna antics will stop - if for no other reason that it is poor teamwork by Jesse.

We all know how many games we have lost and if you really want me to answer those questions then yes, I watch our abysmal performances and yes, I watch great teams continue to dominate due to a number of factors.

I'd be more inclined to describe most of our players as kids currently out of their depth, with few role models to learn from and a coaching panel and administration that is attempting to rebuild the worst list and club in the history of the game. They've done a lot of the work on the list but strong game day success and consistency is still a way off.

We got ahead of ourselves and I think they did too.
