Memorable Moment No.38

No it's definitely not Jeremy Howe.....

From the AFL's Top 50 Most memorable moments, at no.38 is:-

Quote

38. Melbourne seals Geelong's fate
Simonds Stadium was the place of nightmares for the Demons. It was a venue at which they hadn't won in 10 years, with a disastrous 186-point loss there in 2011 still haunting fans. In round 12 those memories were overridden by the sheer joy of a stunning 24-point win that came out of nowhere. Making it even sweeter, young ruckman Max Gawn was the hero. For the Cats, the next match against Adelaide was called off and they lost to North Melbourne one week later, sliding to 11th with a 6-7 record. They missed the finals for the first time since 2006.

The highlight - or one of - the season for Melbourne. The win was enormous for the players, the club and the fans. Max Gawn was indeed huge, but the collective team effort and desire to win spoke volumes for the masses. Despite indifferent and frustrating form throughout the season. Helping put Geelong on the back foot in their pursuit of finals in '15 was also pretty handy.

What were your most memorable highlights or memories from this match?

Max Gawn clunking everything that came his way is high on my list. But nothing can beat Nathan Jones' fourth quarter goal to pretty much seal the game. Loved Neal-Bullen's cameo as well.

Jones was huge.

No Hogan.

That memorable moment was possibly #38 in someone's book but given where we've been at in our recent past, it has to be close to #1 in mine.

However, as has often happened when we've had one bright moment in the gloom of the past decade, the clouds rolled over and by late in the season we were being regularly beaten up again. The second Bulldogs game comes to mind.

Notwithstanding, there were more bright shiny days in 2015 than any time in the past four or five years.

This is true.

In another earlier edition from The AFL Top50, they've listed The Big Freeze at the 'G' with Neale Daniher leading the charge at no.41. I thought that might have ranked a lot higher in the context of memorable moments over the course of the season.

Have just watched the replay of this match. For me the highlight was that on a couple of occasions, most notably in the first quarter, Geelong pushed hard and looked like tting on top but we fought back. Brayshaw was a highlight also, so fierce.

Was a pretty good game by Watts and watching the game again reminded me how often he is involved in our scoring chains.

But what happened in the weeks that followed...and why?

that Geelong win should have set up the season to actually achieve something...But no, it was back to  weekly floggings including a loss to the Essendrug 2nds after beating the Cats in their own Cat Box....

Yes most disappointing that Roos and Co could not keep the list focused. We could have done something. That Cattery win was that good. But instead we lost to Carlscum on the MCG ( Forgot to mention that one!)

Brayshaw laid a crunching tackle on the broadcast wing just after being bumped heavily by Enright if my memory serves.

It was also Enright's 300th game which was another reason the win was so memorable - the fans and Fox commentators turned up expecting a procession and tribute to Enright but we spoiled the party :)

With the abolishment of the sub vest, and the capping of the interchange rotations, I wonder how often we will see both Gawn and Spencer in the same team in '16.  It worked a treat that particular day, but I wonder if that was down to match ups, or if it is something that Roos wanted to "sneakily" trial once or twice this year, so that come Round 1 next year, we know exactly how our structures are going to be.

I may be over-thinking it, but I can assure you that Roos and Goodwin will be thinking about it more than me!

Hogan asking Murphy where their white knight is, as he pointed to the interchange.

Vince and Tex Walker turning up to kick over the Yarra on GF day while still heavily intoxicated.

We have some characters at the club!

It's the most I've enjoyed a win in a long time.

And what I love most about the Roos era is putting embarrassing records to bed. Adelaide at Adelaide, the Etihad hoodoo, Geelong in itself (let alone at Cardinia Park) and Collingwood.

Beating Hawthorn and Norf in 2016 would basically complete the set.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
