I'm not fussed either way.

However, if they were hell bent on changing it I see a subtle opportunity by replacing, "it's the emblem for me and for you" with "it's the emblem for you and for me" then following it up with something like (purely an example) "it's the emblem of the team we love, the team of the old MFC".

Yes, I know, this is potentially cringeworthy to some but remember we have just moulded our new logo around the MFC monogram.

Anyway, this is just thinking out aloud. If they do change it I hope it is as subtle as possible otherwise leave it alone.

You are a flipping moron

You are a flipping moron

1858 gets called a moron for suggesting 'if' they do change it, he hopes it's as subtle as possible, "otherwise leave it alone." OMG.

Did you read 1858's post?

and i'v never ever heard the crowd sing the second verse

so let's stop all nonsense talk about the second verse - it's a non issue - either way

It might the verse they change.

Where every third word is Melbourne, and they pump it out from the loudspeaker when we win in the second rendition of the song.

The change of the song is a non-issue as a whole, so you are missing the lead by saying the second verse is a non-issue...

I wouldn´t exactly call this subtle - "it's the emblem for you and for me" then following it up with something like (purely an example) "it's the emblem of the team we love, the team of the old MFC".

To quote Malcolm Blight when Ox waved the ball in Carlscum´s face before booting a goal in 2000 prelim, ``I think it sucks!!!´´

I do agree with 1858 saying it should be left alone though.

Any subtle change will be catastrophic. People will be confused by the new lyrics, it will sound shocking like all the new songs do post-fable (Port, GWS, Suns, ughhh..) and importantly like many have pointed out - flags were won with that song, you dont just change that. Its like changing the name of the club or the colours. And whats it all for? No one will hear the song and want to support the dees on that basis alone. People outside the AFL (from overseas etc) dont even get the theme songs and think they are cheesy. The way you love them is through repetition and hearing them when winning, useless as anyone at that point will clearly know exactly who this great club is.

Jumping topic , but still sticking with the next thing on the agenda:

I think it would be huge if we could convince the Melbourne City Council to adopt the Red and Blue colours. Therefore when ever the Melbourne City Council's brand goes out into public it is accompanied with the Red and Blue colours. The hope would be that in time everybody (football people and non football people alike) would associate Melbourne the city with red and blue and recognise the tie in with the MFC.

We could also help the city of Melbourne with a new logo as the current one (the one they use at the tennis and Grand Prix etc) is outdated and atrocious.

I understand this would not be an easy thing to achieve(there may even be big hurdles in the way of it happening) but it could be a great branding idea. I have passed this idea on to the club and they have at least acknowledged my email. Just a thought. Who knows?

Good idea Craig but what about the Storm? They have a huge fan base in Melbourne and are very successful, wouldn't think they would like us taking all the glory.

Also, have you ever tried to get a council to do anything? If agreed too, it may take a while to be implemented.

And just how does any of that justify your calling him a "moron"??? I would have thought an apology may have been in order.

Love our theme song!

Best in the AFL.

Would be open to changing the "should old acquaintance be forgot" line with something more dynamic, seems out of place to me, what is it we are likely to forget?

'Should Melbourne's name be forgot'

about time we got a decent bagpiper

Where is the Scottish influence on our family tree?

If we are going all CBD, maybe we could get some busker each week, or some of those graffiti artists channelling Run DMC or the Beastie Boys, or that homeless bloke playing a harmonica?

The possibilities are endless.

I just don't understand how any Melbourne supporter could even contemplate changing the song. Got me fired up.

However, I do apologize for singling 1858 out.

Forgive me hardtack

6 pages and no suggestions come close to making the song better. Not one little bit.

The thread is about what are D'Landers feelings towards this from the President, not so much suggestions about making the song better: -

"And there's certainly some passionate people telling us we have to put the word 'Melbourne' into our song. In terms of our overall position and brand we have to look into that."

If you need to get the word MELBOURNE in have it as a 'shout' after "it's the emblem for me and for you" MELBOURNE and after "the team of the red and the blue" MELBOURNE. Don't have to change the song then

Can i suggest some modifications.

it's a grand old flag and we play like handbags

who have got nothing better to do

You can push us off

The ball if you if you want

and if you wait we will kick it to you.

Every heart will spew

for the red,white and blue

As we chuck a game or two

If old successes be forgot

Just remember we won one or two!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
