WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CLAYTON OLIVER

Actually reminds me a helluva lot like Jordie Mckenzie in the way he moves.

Jodie moved (and competed) okay.....he just was never able to refine the basic footy skill of kicking.

But much as I just loved Jordie's work ethic etc, I hope we are aiming a hell of a lot higher overall as a footballer.

Certainly fits the theme of competitor, would be a good choice.

i just don't feel we can pass up the opportunity for a Parish and key forward combination

Oliver reminds me of Gus Brayshaw but with far less class but makes up for it with just determination and will.

Sloane clone

Looks more agile, better evasive skills than Sloane IMO. Also, I think Oliver is better in tight, IMO a better clearance player than Sloane. But where Sloane has him covered is in endurance, gut running, and effectiveness. I think that comes with experience though. Oliver is an interesting draftee, he is a good user on both sides of his body, and like Wines, he does all the grunt work. I would take Oliver above any other mid, but I wouldn't be disappointed if the club looks to take a couple of talls with 3 and 7.

Please don't pass on Ollie!!!

Dear god, stop. You are going from thread to thread talking in absolutes about how we MUST take player X or we'll be STUPID to take player Y. You've now confirmed that you are basing your opinions on highlight reels. You are in no position at all to be making such grand statements.

If you are doing it purely for possible bragging rights about certain players that we don't pick, just save it. No-one cares. They really don't.

I like the way he doesn't waste the ball but still goes forward. No sideways or backwards with this kid.

Surely it's easier to teach a kid when to hold up and go backwards or sideways than it is to teach someone to take it on.

Probably don't read this if you are a member of the Oliver family: but he's fat, pale, red headed with a face only a mother could love. He doesn't look like an AFL footballer, probably why he didn't get picked for Vic Country. But he plays like one. And if he has the work ethic he'll get the body sorted out and the AFL player standard haircut and fake tan.

Their might be more skill, speed and athleticism elsewhere for picks 3 and 7. But if there isn't I'd take this guy in a flash.

Funnily enough, the bolded part reminds me very much of the words that a prominent person within the TAC Cup system once used to describe Cameron Ling back in his early days as a player with the Geelong Falcons. How did that turn out?

At which point Liz Hurley may take him as well.

Depends on his peripheral vision and awareness.

I'll say it before and I'll say it again. A 2 minute highlight video means everything for supporters but nothing for recruiters. Look at Freeman's highlights vs Salem's. Everyone got sucked into Freeman's burst ability, the way he would slice through opponents like butter.. Salem's highlights were competitive, neat kick, a hard runner and tackled well. Parish may not have the flashiest highlights, but he is everything we are looking for in a future AFL star. Someone who will be competitive week in and week out, not go missing.

This kid could be anything.

He could be another Tom Rockliff.

He could be another Josh Toy.

Whilst the payoff might be huge, I'd be inclined not to roll the dice with this pick.

Parish at 3 and a forward at 7 (whether it be Weideman, Curnow, or failing those Burton).

Source? Also if we take Oliver at 7, would we still take Parish at 3 or take a tall?

I'd guess we take Parish at 3 simply because he's too good to pass up, especially for our needs.

And then Oliver is a potential pick depending on who goes at 4, 5 & 6.

I know there's talk of Milera to Gold Coast at 6, but I couldn't see us taking him as early as 7, and we need to make sure all our bases are covered if Curnow, Weideman, Francis, etc. are all gone.

I'm not against taking Oliver either, as I love the look of his attack, but I'd choose Parish ahead of him every time.

    GIANT HEADACHE by Whispering Jack

The crack in the captain’s ankle might be very small but the repercussions of the injury are enormous. The aftershock of the news that Max Gawn will sit on the sidelines for the next two or three weeks has provided Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin with a giant headache, not unlike the one he faced after the Kings Birthday when another Demon superstar Christian Petracca suffered his season-ending injury. That headache is magnified by the fact that Goodwin is facing a month of tough encounters a

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

TEN YEARS AFTER by Whispering Jack

Things have changed in the more than ten years since the West Coast Eagles decimated Melbourne by 93 points on the MCG early in the 2014 season. The two sides had not met at the home of football in the interim until yesterday when Melbourne won by a comfortable 54 points to remain in contention for this year’s finals series. Back in those days, the Demons were in the midst of their Great Depression but they have since tasted premiership glory and experienced a long enough period among

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b
