And missed goals he should kick. I’m willing to cut him a bit of slack but with him in the second forward role to Brown 2021 is the year he needs to make things click.

He missed some extremely gettable goals this year for a forward that actually has a good kicking style, and also kicked quite a few from point blank finishing the good work of others (good work from him too to get into that position). The Brisbane game in particular I remember him missing a couple of fairly standard shots, we lost that by a goal, and vs North he should’ve had a massive bag but finished 2.3.

True over the course of his career he’s been a decent set shot.

Yep, ok ill retract ridiculous comment, but I do think its overly harsh. The misses stand out in our memories, because they have come at times we could have won if he kicked them, but overall his kicking for goal has been good and I'm not sure he has been poor often enough enough for it to be a pattern or concern yet.

I’ll meet you there on those thoughts. He has a good action so I think it comes down to a little confidence.

I just really hope he and Brown are able to work well in tandem to ease the pressure on each other.

Pates, went to all the games this year at Carrara/Metricon.  Almost always a decent breeze, with very little protection from the minature grand stands and virtually no protection at one end.  I do remember Weid missing those set shots and thinking if he had just nailed one, we would have been home.

But he wasn't Robinson Crusoe that night, by a long way.  Harley Bennell, who was a gerally a beuatful shot on goal also missed an absolute sitter that I thought he would have nailed in a heartbeat 99 time out of 100.  Our feild kicking in general against the Dogs at Carrara was abysmal, resulting in numerous abhorrent and costly turnovers that went a long way to loosing us the game - again quite windy conditions.

Perhaps this is something for Yze to work on with the team?

I think his kicking is fine. He’s had off days for sure like every player but broadly his stats match-up with his peers. It’s the double grabs that are the big knock on his game imv. Cut those out and he’ll be a real threat for us.

I don’t think the MFC have done a good job developing Sam. KPF will have off days. It’s important to persist and Goodwin hasn’t done that dropping him after some bad games, not picking him at the start of this season, which has obviously dented his confidence. Sam has had runs of games where he has been very good so he definitely has the ability.

This year he needs to be backed in. Told he and BB will be our spearheads. Sending him back to the 2’s serves no purpose anymore. Let’s see what he’s got this year with BB beside him. I think he’s got the goods and will deliver 40 odd goals for us.

I think his problem hasn't been taking the number 1 defender, its been taking all of the defenders, as the only forward (literally, or figuratively when TMac was playing). When this happens he struggles to get to the contests because he is being blocked and bumped etc. by the additional tall defenders. We don't seem to kick it "to him" very well, instead kicking it to the forward line and hoping he gets there.

Our forward line is often too crowded anyway ... mostly due to the other clubs flooding back knowing that our forwards often not adhering to the basics (not playing in front,  not leading to the right spots,  not enough defensive pressure,  2nd & 3rds efforts poor,  not playing as a team within a team etc etc)

Plus,  our forwards give the ball back to the opposition by missing easy shots for goal (yips,  choking)

Weideman is part of that forward line group so the blame needs to be shared equally

As a collective,  our forwards need to play a lot better and also,  we need to move the ball quickly into the forward line (as we did in 2018) to give our forwards more of a chance before the forward line becomes too crowded.

So it's more of a structure/system issue rather than any 1 particular player (Ben Brown should help as should Kozzie & LJ with a years experience under their belts)

He reminds me a LOT of Jack Darling in his earlier years.  Great potential....good hands/decision making/kick.  It took Darling to around the age of 26 when he really broke out.  He had Kennedy to always take the best defender. Have a feeling this will be the year we start seeing some consistency.  BB will greatly accelerate his development showing him how to be more crafty about his role.

If 2020 was a full 22 game season, the following players would have kicks 40+ goals: 

Hawkins, Kennedy, Gunston, Dixon. 

So you're saying that it's unacceptable if Weid isn't in the top 4 goalkickers in the league next year? Even though he'll be playing as a second tall with Brown? 

If you look at the second forward for each of the teams those players played on, only Darling was more productive than Weideman. So you're thinking Weid's production will increase when Brown comes into the team, and so much so that he will be one of the top 4 most productive key forwards, even though he will be playing as the second tall option?

And anything less than that is 'not acceptable' ...... ?

Sam’s integral to our structure. I think we’ll see him marking plenty on the wings this year along with Jackson and Brown we really have no excuse for not kicking enough goals

It feels like Weideman has been around a long time, but it's worth remembering that only played 40 odd games. Only the Buddy Franklin's of this world are dominating matches at that point of their careers. Yeah, there's a bit of chicken and egg, because if Weidman's form had been better, he would have played more senior games. But most of the matches he's missed have been due to injury, and most of his extended periods of poor form have coincided with lack of fitness.

Also, people need to temper their expectations of a top ten pick. The average #9 draft pick plays 94 games. Provided that he doesn't have any further major injuries, Weideman will exceed that when he's 26 and entering his prime. Scott Gumbleton, Mitch Thorpe, Luke Molan, Lucas Cook were busts. Sam Weideman is not. I don't think he'll ever be in the discussion for the best forward in the league, but he'll be an important player for us for the next 8-10 years.

I think Sam will benefit from not having the number 1 defender in 2021.  Will be interesting how this translates in terms of the targets that midfielders kick to* in 2021 - will he have less opportunities as he's not the main target.

Having said that, I felt Fritsch was often a target going forward and had he kicked straight (prior to this year a very reliable kick) we would have looked much better.

 

* this is assuming that our midfielders are kicking to targets and not blazing away.

I would replace 40 with 30. With lower scores these days, less and less players are kicking 40 a season.

Come round 8 and if he's kicked just 5 or 6 goals, he can hand the keys over to T Mac or M Brown.

Should be having at least 3 shots at goal a game given he'll be getting the number 2 key defender, and kicking his 2.1 or 1.2 per week for a total of 33-35 goals for the season.

He kicked 1.0 in the last 4 games of the year. That was unacceptable.
