Perth Commentators on SEN

I was listening to the radio prior to watching Sunday's game on TV.

The Perth commentators made fun of our banner, which extolled the virtues of our skipper in his 200th.

They laughed in sheer derision at what it said....something like "Nathan Jones" 200.... Our Hero...Our raging bull".

Twice they read it out and laughed in mocking fashion. I could hear them all giggling in the background.

No mention of what a gutsy effort it's been to reach such a milestone the way he plays.

I didn't hear the radio when Nathan was penalised for holding the ball while unconscious, but I'll bet they thought that was pretty funny too.

My partner (who know's nothing about footy) was in the car when I was listening to the coverage laughing at them. She couldn't believe they (Gossige in particular) were let out on the weekends to be on the radio. She actually thought it was some kind of send up or a remake of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", I struggled to convince her that these were real football callers.

Just reinforced her opinion that footy is a dumb game.

West Aussies are the most parochial and narrow minded football supporters in the country. The irony is that they bang on about how "it's still the VFL" rubbish. The 16 other AFL clubs get very little coverage in the media and half of the time it's incorrect. Gossage is terrible and 6PR which is 3AW's affiliate station is woeful. Basil Zemplas, Brad Hardie, Karl Langdon etc. Excruciating radio to listen to.

WA footy stalwarts hate Victorian clubs with sheer passion and the jibes flow freely on radio and television. It's quite childish and cringeworthy as rjay pointed out.

Subi oval is a very hostile place to be when you're team is getting done.

I don't mind it. I spent 5 years in WA, they are just like that. Its like they don't even follow football outside of Western Australia. I look forward to the Jack Viney 200 game banner, I don't think they'll be laughing so hard at that one, I believe he'll be a premiership captain and brownlow medalist by the time we see that banner.

I listened to some of SEN's coverage on sunday.

Just like 3GL when i was a kid.

We will be laughed at until we harden up as a club. Confront issues head on & replace our list with better players rather than hoping they will improve.

My sister moved to Perth a few years back and her son is fairly mad for the Hawks (brother in law to blame). I get requests from my sister for things like Hawks socks for her son as none are available in Perth, the AFL shop is blue and yellow on one side and purple on the other, I was over there a few weeks back and wandering through a supermarket I noticed the afl merch, with the exception of one piece for each of the dons, pies, hawks, and cats, it was all the two WA teams. I would assume SA would be similar. Almost textbook on how to build a duopoly.

I live in WA as well. PAROCHIAL"very limited or narrow in scope or outlook; provincial" That definition is accurate and in context. On talk-back radio prior to the game the commentators trotted out the old chestnut that there were too many clubs in Melbourne and that the likes of Melbourne and St Kilda should fall on their swords. Imagine what it would be like with a WCE v Dockers Grand Final. For a start all you will hear is that it should be played at Subiaco and not in Victoria and that the competition favours the Victorian clubs blah, blah, blah, blah. Look, I think both WA clubs should withdraw from the AFL and then they can avoid any travel at all and play each other every single week.

Unfortunately the grand final scenario is highly likely. I think I'll go bush.
