In what is deemed the weakest draft in over a decade, I'd love to see them get an end of first round pick to clog their list up even further!

Happy for Brisbane to apply for a priority pick and if they do, I would expect Melbourne to apply for one as well, irrespective of how the rest of the season pans out - on any comparison, the AFL would have to either give both clubs a PP or as is more likely, give neither of them a PP.

Without being entirely cynical, in no way does any category of their current situation match ours according to whatever the AFL's secret formula. The threshold must be very high. They simply can't get one or the rejected but consistent chorus of demands to disclose the formula that will ensue will do more damage to the brand than good. You can see that the current admin are at least attempting to dampen draft advantages and find other areas ($) to even the comp instead.

Whilst on the face of it, the picks received for the go home five may have been under what Brisbane valuations, they ended up getting good players with those selections. All five have played and showed talent in the last two years (including last year’s rising star winner).

Pick 22 was Darcy Gardiner, who was the highest ranked key defender of the crop and could have gone higher

Pick 25 was Daniel McStay (Zach Merrett was still on the board) who has shown promise, although ironically is rumoured to want out.

Pick 28 was Lewy Taylor

Pick 33 was Tom Cutler

Pick 34 was Nick Robertson. Both Cutler and Robertson would have gone higher if their draft years had been unaffected by injury, and both have played good games at AFL level.

I remember John spent one or two seasons for Melbourne and played a few games with brother Ted. He had injury problems at the Dees. Always remember thinking that Ted was the better player but for some reason never fulfilled his potential.

It could be that, like us last year, they are actually asking for overs in terms of compo they get for losing a free Agent or player.

I think they might get it or get equivalent in AFL assistance. Maybe debt relief. There's is around $12mill iirc. The AFL cannot have them fail in the new territory of Qld.

Brisbane asking for a PP is in a different bucket from a Victorian team asking, unfortunately.

Didn't we see Ted or was it John? in a news article some time ago suffering from the long term effects of concussion? I think he had a case going for compo against the AFL or MFC.

On 3AW last night Gerard Healy and Mathew Richardson both agreed that the Lions should get draft assistance. Gerard has been on the draft assistance bandwagon for the Lions for some time. I can't remember him having the same stance for the MFC.

It was discussed today on SEN that Brisbane could get the first 2 draft picks because Mathew Luenberger as a Free Agent this year may be classified as a 1st round compensation pick. This would mean that should they finish last they would get the pick immediately following their first selection. This is the same as last year with the Frawley compensation pick (pick 2).

That would most likely mean that both Schache and Weitering could go to Brisbane. Also James Aish may attract a 1st round trade.

Back in the day when they televised the twos on tele in the Army Reserve cup Melbourne featured quite regularly and we had a good young up and coming team featuring the likes of Newport, Yeates, and the Fidges. John couldn't quite crack it in the seniors and when the Bears kicked off he headed north, but i remember John with that big barrel chest playing at CHF in our reserve premiership against the Blues- where if memory serves me correctly he was actually knocked out. After AFL he went to the SANFL and had a successful career there.

EDIT: He used to wear number 44 - surprising what you can remember after all these years.

Doesn't have to be a monster deal, the AFL offer compensation at their own discretion via the secret formula. They won't give them a PP but they'll give them overs for compensation (probably pick 2), similar to the Frawley compo for us (except we legitimately needed help to get off the bottom, unlike Brisbane who merely have a long injury list). If our first rounder goes to Prestia, moving down the draft order doesn't really affect us anyway. Would royally [censored] the other teams around the mark, though.

Especially Essendon, who appear to be doing everything in their power to make their own compensation for 2 years of draft sanctions. Ruckman Giles gets the most contested marks in the VFL last week and still isn't promoted to a team in desperate need of a ruckman, utterly bewilderingly playing without one. Yep, real headscratcher that one. Almost as bad as tanking via "playing players out of position."

Don't be surprised if Brisbane, too, have a few more devastatingly poor losses so they keep their percentage lower than Gold Coast.

Cannot possibly see Leuie getting band 1 compo. WTF has he done to generate that? Could be a handy pick up, but hardly worth a song and a dance.

If that's the case, can't wait to get both pick 5 and 6 when Jamar leaves for the Blues/GWS/Bombers.

Hang on a minute , it is Leuenberger being discussed for first round compo right ? Hasn't exactly shot the lights out as a player has he? Realise the AFL generally ignores precedent and couldn't give a stuff about such matters, but wouldn't they be creating a future problem for themselves here?
