Demonland Player of the Year - Round 8

Very surprised that some left Jones out of the top six players.

He was absolutely superb - his attack on the ball was on another level and I thought he was the one who set the tone in the last quarter to enable us to withstand the Dogs' charge and then run away with it.

Spencer and Toumpas might have caught the eye because their games were far superior to what they've shown in the past, but in terms of impact on the game they were not at the level of Nathan Jones. He was immense and was clearly in our best three for me.

He was well beaten in the first quarter, had two poor errors including one that any other year would have seen us drop our bundle and lose. I also thought Wallis was one of their better players. Was serviceable and great in the last but thought it was not close to his best.

I agree M Jones doesn't deserve votes, but this statement is overly harsh. His job was to keep Murphy quiet and he did it pretty well. After M Jones was subbed out Murphy came into the play. Now to my votes:

I'll put my hand up, I was at the game and didn't even realise he was doing a job on Murphy, credit where it's due.

Actually, the bigger shock is that I actually noticed. I'm not usually one who identifies match-ups. But Bail stopped Johanisen (I'm not sure if I've spelled that right, but Nasher can fix it with square brackets) and with M Jones stopping Murphy a lot of the Bulldogs run was successfully eliminated. So, even though M Jones and Bail didn't appear to do that much, and, with Riley, will likely be the first to be omitted when Viney, Tyson, JKH, etc are ready to return, they did their job.

Carries team every week and watches teammates butcher the footy. No credit.

Makes a mistake and supporters go on about it like its the worst thing ever done by a Melbourne player.

I guess today I knew that Jones was human. Until today I was sure he was a machine.

I guess because it was so unusual it was commented upon. As you say, he is human after all.

What about Matty Jones job on Murph Wore him like a glove

I love Man on Man footy

I think that many (myself included) have not given him credit for that. Good post.

Nevertheless I would expect that he and Bail will make way for the likes of Viney, Tyson, Salem, Frost when they recover.

NB: Special mention to Brayshaw whose last quarter was truly immense and a sign of whats to come with this kid.

Pretty much as I saw the top 4. The last two votes I couldn't seperate from a bunch of players. [Pedersen], Grimes, Garlett (creative and always kept the defence honest), Watts (went when it was his turn, and was very creative at times), Spencer (mongrel and hardness), Toumpas (worked hard all day and got better the longer the game went), Brayshaw (worked hard all day, and then went up a cog in the last), Jones, N and Jones, M (both of them overcame quiet moments to influence the game when it was needed), or even Pigdog who came off the bench and attacked any and every Footscray player he saw with the ball.

Great team game, and all the players should feel like they played an important part in the win.

Edit: And Cross... how could I forget him?

Surprised you didn't give your love child Spencil all the votes Uncle Bitter. I've never seen a grown man at the footy gush over a player like you did yesterday. At least you kept your shirt buttoned up this time, thankfully.

Spence did well, I might add, and his kicking looked, um.... good.

Oops. Sixth vote goes to Gus. Sorry CBD

He must of been reading Demonland...a few of us called for him to be moved back last year.

...but seriously it was a good move to bring him in against Boyd otherwise Dunn would have been outsized again and when Boyd was subbed out with only one handball. The beauty with Fitz is he then had the pace to go with a smaller opponent.

Early days but if he can develop as a defender then he offers height and leg speed. Could be a career saving move but lets wait and see.

This is the future with more and more big forwards and resting rucks

We have done well with dunn at 1.92m on the likes of kurt tippet (until last game) but effective tall defender is required - maybe fitzies the one

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
