Not sure how this "ends speculation". I would have thought it would have the opposite effect ... as the couple of posts above confirm.

If he goes, the only positive is that we'd receive the mother-of-all compensation.

Anyone know who picks 1 and 2 are likely to be in the 2017 draft?

Id be worried if he was out of contract at the end of the season.  This is a nothing story.

Makes perfect sense.

I reckon he'll go, sadly, and have thought so for some time. Its the risk of drafting interstate players, not that the Bleeding Hearts who support Freo/WCE will admit (but, but, but we lost Dylan Roberton ).

The narrative of "talking", "maybe negotiating" and "putting off talks" has been seen too many times and rarely works with the exception of players like Cloke who are openly after a payday that their clubs aren't willing to offer until they have to.

Two things have led me to think this:

1. He can write his own cheque here, for as many years as he wants. His manager referencing the reforming CBA is a positive, but then could also be the most convenient excuse for a person in the snake oil industry that is AFL player management.
2. Every time he's been asked whether he likes Melbourne, he never really answers yes. I asked him two years ago whether he missed Perth/preferred Melbourne and he pretty much point blank said he missed and preferred Perth but likes Melbourne.

At this stage, I think we're going to need a massive, massive year and to make finals - or he'll ask Mahoney to trade him. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who'll hold us to ransom; loves the club for what it is and will drive a fair price for his own head. I just reckon he'd rather be surfing in Scarborough on his days off, rather than heading up to Torquay every six weeks and hanging out in the city when training is off.

Club comes first every time, but if we go backwards/Goodwin ends up being poor - we could see repeats of 2008 doomsday scenarios :(.

Lets just hope he does re-sign, and that Weideman is bloody good.

Just a smart move.  Most players don't negotiate a new contract 2 years out.  Some do, but if I was Hogan's manager and there was going to be a new CBA I'd say wait too.  I doubt it's Hogan's idea, just good management, which is what he's paying for.

Unlike Pirlo above, I'm very relaxed that he'll stay.  He loves his teammates and they love him.

If we win 10 or more, I think he would more likely stay. 

If we win less than 7, he will walk back to WA.

Simple as that.

I am so sick of good players wanting out, and so jealous of Geelong and Hawthorn.

Nothing to worry about at the moment. It's rare players sign an extension a year or two before their current contract expires unless they are certain the club is on the right path. Considering our on field performance over the last decade, I can understand the hesitance to sign a long term contract when it's uncertain where we'll be in terms of our on field performance this time in a couple years.

Nothing in it really. The new CBA could see a number of changes happening and it only makes sense to see what those are. 

As long as we look after him and keep winning then he will sign. I'm not worried.

Agree totally ProDee. There is going to be a bigger bucket of bickies with the new TV rights deal and it would not be good advice to sign a new contract without knowing the full details of the next CBA. Also if he doubles his goal output in 2016 it will only enhance his bank balance when we resign him for the next 5 to 10 ten years.

Not sure whether Jesse will stay or go, but I think this decision is in his best interest long term. Assuming he has another cracker year, the asking price and contract length will be unheard of. IMO if he re-signs with us at the end of the year it will be $1mill+ pa. If he goes, Freo better offer something decent.

I think it will be best to just never get emotionally attached to Hogan (good luck with that).  It will hurt just that little bit less if he leaves.

I feel that his value is only going to get higher; the longer it goes the better the contract will get.

His manager is doing what managers are employed to do.

Why, are we planning on trading him to Carlton?

He's still contracted for two years! It makes perfect sense that he and his manager would wait until closer to the end of it, any sooner and he's possibly going to rip himself off. Chill.

End of this season not that bad as stated in other posts mgr wants to maximise his value... But afl just can't sit back & have a so called equalisation comp with early picks only to see them leave to a stronger club after hes been developed! 

People bag the English premier league but smaller clubs can develop players & sell them which allows them to buy other players to strengthen their squads etc early draft picks don't compensate & are always risky as they may fail..

He has two years left.. No big deal.. We win games, make the finals.. He stays!

Last season we showed we can play well without him. Against Geelong our forward line was the most fluid and functional for  years. Of course I want him to stay but  if he goes I hope he plays like a true demon so he can leave with dignity if so.  But I don't want to see the club held to ransom and everything revolving around him for the next two seasons.  Last season we tended to make him the be all and end all focus of the forward line. I prefer him to be a role player and let's see how much he gives. 

PS. I thought I saw him or someone that may be impersonating him at a Perth restaurant last Sunday night with a female companion.

He still has two seasons at the Dees to go in which to build his bond with his team mates and good friends Kenty and Harmesey.

Loves Melbourne and Perth is a pretty boring place in comparison for a young fella chasing his dreams.

i get the feeling he is a pretty loyal bloke.

One thing is for sure, it's officially time to panic!!

I hope to see the development of our list as a whole particularly our young but still only potential guns.   It is all about the team not the individual despite the focus on Hogan. Like all supporters I want Hogan to stay but not at all cost. The club has to develop a team and manage its list and contracts/remuneration in a sensible and professional manner. It's not much point having a gun like Jesse if we lose our midfield because of salary issues resulting from overcompensating one player. It's why team success is so important over the next 2 years. If we have success if will all work out.

I actually feel sick thinking about Hogan going to anther club. We have drafted and found a genuine once in a generation star..the thought of him playing for another team haunts my sleep. 

He'll leave eventually sometime in his career but not fussed he has put off talks till the end of the year even though he has another year left on his contract.

Smart choice by his manager too.
