When Hogan was lining up for one of his three goals against the Doggies last week, rival skipper Robert Murphy was apparently doing his best to put him off by screaming "You can't miss this, you're Melbourne's great white hope".

Indeed, in his 16th season, Murphy probably had every reason to believe that sledging a first-year player might work. Which is why Hogan's response, after kicking the goal, is truly priceless. "And there's your great white hope," he retorted, pointing to Tom Boyd, who was sitting on the Dogs' bench at the time.

    Gotta say, I find Careys journalism refreshing. Seems to rate a lot of our list highly and always defends them when due.

    That said if something negative is deserving he also doesn't shy away from saying it as it is.

    Personally I'm not fussed if Hogan kicks a bag or not.

    If he has 21 possession, 9 marks, 8 score involvements and 2-3 goal games every week I'll be ecstatic.

    The ideal would be a triple-double - 20+ possessions, 10+ marks, 10+ score involvements.

    Carey is actually my favourite person in the media. He isn't influenced by everyone else like so many in the media but actually says what he believes rather than conforming to the norm. Not afraid to give anybody a bit of a serve but also gives credit when it's due. It's pretty encouraging when you hear his speak of Hogan, he is one of his biggest fans. For Hogan there is no better endorsement than from the greatest player to ever play the game (In saying that, another of the greatest in Leigh Matthews obviously was making comments without understanding Hogan's game).

    Hogan is so damn impressive because he along with Jeffy are the ones that the opposition are trying to stop, and with the exception of the Fremantle game, he has still managed to have an influence every game. Just knows how and when to impose himself through work rate and sheer aggression. He doesn't have senior forwards to hide behind but rather than shy away I think he relished the opportunity. He wants to be the man.

    Will be ok, Boyd, but I stand by what I posted pre-draft, that he was massive and beating up on kids who couldn't compete with his reach, without doing anything particularly impressive.

    He has some good attributes, but he doesn't have "it."

    Agreed machsy, it's far more difficult to rate young key position players because often they have a huge physical advantage over the kids they're playing on,

    Actually without making that clear, the impact of Hogan's remark is pretty much lost on those who were not aware.

    anyone else think that Hogan will feel queens birthday is a big stage for him and he will be pumped for it. No pressure on him and its totally the opposite for when Watts debuted, but Jesse has this presence about him and I just feel he'd love the big crowd and atmosphere and would want to perform. I cannot wait.

    Obvioisly had a quiet game today, not through a lack of effort but just didnt bounce his way today, expecting a big game next week against lesser oponents.

    He would have scored more if he wasn't forced to play up the ground for so much of the match. The shot for goal from the 50 metre line unfortunately tested him, especially when (after his overly-long run up) he din't have enough energy left to roost it.

    It's funny, that was probably his worse game, I think Frost beat him one on one, and it was killing him. But he was far from our worst, still competed well, had a few score involvements, for such a young player, even when down he contributes.

    We struggled to bring him into the game. Amazing how this week, when we actually match the opposition through the midfield and with i50's, that we struggle to convert these to shots on goal.

    He was outnumbered or in the wrong position in nearly every marking attempt. Couldn't decide how much of this was was due to Hogan, his opponent or the ball being delivered to the wrong spot.

    Good chance it was a combination.

    Frost continually worked him under the ball and he wasn't able to counter. It wasn't helped by us continually bombing the ball on top of him instead of putting it out in front. He'll learn, he'll get better.

    I reckon he learns more from bad games than good games to be honest.

    It's good experience for him to play in big games, and have a struggle with his opponent.

    At this stage of his career every game is a good game. We put a lot of pressure on him, but realistically he is still traveling better than most KPFs his age have historically.

    All year he's been caught under the ball but has done a good job of making a contest and in many cases still taking the mark. Yesterday Frost read him very well and simply didn't let Hogan get a sniff in a marking contest. He needs to learn how to break off from an opponent into space because he's struggled with that all year. But his effort up until mid-way through the third was good. At that point he dropped off. Soundly beaten but still a competitor. All we can ask, really.

    Frost worked really hard in that regard. Gotta hand it to him. He out muscled Hogan from the start.

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

      What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
