I reckon it was us that went cold on him.

I think this is the case.

His manager last year made note that out of all Victorian club's we were the most vocal for his service but Prestia wanted to honour his contract.

This year we have heard nothing from the Dees in regards to Prestia which suggest to me that we have said thanks but no more stuffing us around, we are moving on to bigger and better things.(Clayton Oliver)

Prestia has had his chances over the journey to join us and be part of something special.

Well let's be frank here, why the hell else would you go to Richmond except if they were insane enough to offer you $1M more over a contract? Especially if you had concerns about your ability to play football for much longer; I'd be setting up my superannuation fund as well.

The post was from May 27 this year so something has changed since then. Richmond must have shat themselves and thrown bucket loads of cash at him.

Yep ET, I think this is the most likely scenario. Twelfthmond weren't staring into the abyss on May 27.

Well if three consecutive straight-sets finals losses wasn't hint enough, it seems the abyss of 13th place hasn't hit home yet either.

On Footy Classifieds, Hutchy, Barrett and Lloyd were all pumping up Melbourne, and Roos in particular. They asked Judd for his opinion, fully expecting him to agree. Judd basically said that the season should be seen as a failure because we didn't make the finals. And if we were content with our incremental improvement, we're destined for failure.

This from the guy who in late 2007 chose to join the basketcase Blues for a mega contract instead of accepting a lower offer from the Hawks who would go on to win 3 flags over the course of his Carlton career.

We are heading in the right direction for the first time in a long time. We still have one of the youngest lists in the AFL. We have accumulated perhaps the best pool of potentially elite self motivated talent this club has had in my lifetime. We have come an extraordinarily long way since Roos, Jackson et al took over. Next year I'll be disappointed if we don't play finals. This year I'm happy that that we have improved greatly again on the field and are in contention for the 8 with 2 games to go.

Yep, I'd say he and his manager are trying to secure his future. Disappointing. I'd like to think I wouldn't do it in his place, but who knows?

Is it possible, for example, that we offered him a stratified "incentive-based" contract where he's paid according to performance, while Toigs just offered him a flat wage irrespective of whether he plays or not? If it's reasonable money, he'd choose us, but if Toigs are offering insane money, then like Scully he'd be insane not to take it.

It's possible, but I'm inclined to think we just offered him less cash and possibly less years too.

Prestia would have had a better offer at tigerland, and lets be honest, his prospects of getting a run every week are increased at Punt Road compared with his prospects with us.

Frankly I think our inside midfielder stocks are perfectly fine without Prestia. Let's look for more aggressive outside run this trade period, and probably for half the cost (draft pick wise and salary cap wise).

I think the club had the decision between Oliver and Prestia last year, had he chosen to come to us. He honoured his contract, we took Oliver, the rest is history. Why bother pursuing him at that price one year later? Let him be a burden on another club's salary cap.

I still think we need more midfield depth. If it's not Prestia, then we still need to be on the look out in the coming 2-3 years. As they say, midfields win premierships.

And hopefully, the more we improve, the easier to land free agents that don't cost us anything.

Prestia is a good player and will add something to the Tiges...but they still don't really understand their own list.

They may well push back into finals contention next year but if they're reliant on the likes of Prestia and surely not Cloke then they are going no further and just delaying the rebuild another few years.

The outside noise is rattling their cage.

You shouldn't make list decisions on this basis but they had to get him, the media and fan noise was just too great for them. After missing Treloar they had to get a name player over the line.

We are lucky we have Roos in charge of the FD.

PJ made a statement early on about him along the lines that he'd never met anyone who went about his business without any care for the outside noise. I would say PJ is similar. They set a direction and make decisions to make sure they reach their destination.

Excellent post. Agree with the implications of the first part that Toigs seem to think that they need just a top-up rather than a rebuild. They're still looking for the spectacular Hail-Mary punt to redeem them, without the hard work & pain of bottoming out.

And agree too with all your points about outside noise.

It's actually possible that Richmond could remain in the 7th-12th bracket for another ten years purely off topping up alone. They will most certainly never get close to a Grand Final, let alone a premiership, with the current core they have.

And they clearly have no intention of bottoming out and rebuilding from the ground up, despite how obvious their garbage list is for every non-Richmond supporter.

It's going to be a glorious period of Anzac Eve matches in years to come; one that could rival Colonwood's QB record over us.

What a joke this club is turning into.

Gale comes out admitting that they compromised their recruiting strategies in order to not bottom out, costing themselves any realistic chance at going deep into finals......

Then someone comes up with a brilliant idea. Lets do the same thing AGAIN!

And Cloke?

Really?

My understanding is Dion will choose us. Hogan will re-sign along with McDonald.  We are unlikely to lose regular 22 by choice.

As I have previously said, I will retire GNF if I am wrong.  This is the firm belief of our club.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
