Signs you're a Melbourne supporter #134

You [censored] bricks over a NAB Cup game, with the quiet chant of "please don't suck" running through your head on a continuous loop hours before the game.

I said almost the exact same thing the other day to a friend (fried).

I'm heading to the Lieghoak club to watch.

As a demons club they have the big screen projector downstairs and nice to sit with demons diehards. Pretty good food to.

I went there for a game last year. The food was cheap, decent value for money pub grub, but could be better. The decor of the place is a mess though and the big screen was in the bistro only and was pretty poor quality projector set up if I recall correctly.

My local pub doesn't have the MFC die hards and might even move the MFC game to a second screen instead of the big screen. But the big screen is a proper TV not a projector and the place is cleaner and more youthful.

Does that game start at 4:10pm? The AFL website have it as 4:10pm EST.

6:10pm Bris, really pumped for this game and seeing the new blokes run around.

You are not alone

I'm actually a little excited at the prospect of seeing Hogan and Garlett up forward... not only just to see what they are capable of, but also to see what kind of an impact that has on the games of Dawes and JKH. Also pretty excited to see what sort of run Lamumba gives us out of defence.

We should go to Brisbane, watch it an hour earlier!

It will be a great night hardtack. Also keen to look at the backline with Frost and Salem injected!

Spoke to the Bentleigh Club yesterday mdemonski2 and they are not showing it in the big room upstairs where MFC games are usually broadcast.

Said it will be on in the Members Bar, which has big screens but will also be showing the racing no doubt.

This is the slack thing about the MFC investment in the Bentleigh Club. They only treat it as a passive investment and pokies venue (plus a piece of real estate). They should be hands-on managers and get it really cranked up as a Demon venue. When they first bought it, they had (injured) players working behind the jump and put on the big screen in the function room downstairs and had round tables and a good meal. Great atmosphere, in interstate matches, everybody wore their footy gear and I seem to recall they also had a raffle. It was actually a fun place to go. Now it is more fun down the pub!

It would be better to go at quarter time so you can warn them about what's going to happen, take advantage of this time loophole

Damn were they at Windy Hill?

Calling it early, Kent, Garlett and JKH to be very dangerous in this game, if they all play well i'm not sure freo have the small defenders to cover them, they will be more worried about Hogan, Dawes and Gawn

truth be told, more nervous about playing the mock bombers in two weeks time

If the Saints give them a pasting this weekend I won't be that nervous.

Thanks grapeviney. Will have to watch in the bar it looks like. Appreciate heads up.

2008 game vs Freo is on Fox Footy at the moment, if anyone wants to whet the appetite... :)

Have just signed up for the AFL Live subscription since the NAB games are free. Going to give it a crack casting the screen from my phone to the telly through the chromecast. Hope it works, can't be bothered going to the pub tonight. Bloddy excited to see Hogan play!!!

Would be nice to put up a fight in Perth for the first time in 9 years, even if it is only the NAB Challenge

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • AFLW: 2025 Season Preview

Ten seasons. Eighteen teams. With the young talent pathway finally fully connected, Women’s Australian Rules football is building momentum and Season 2025 promises to be the best yet. In advance of Season 10, the AFL leadership has engaged in candid discussions with all clubs regarding strategies to boost attendance and expand fan bases. Concerningly, average attendances in 2024 were 2,660 fans per match, with the women’s game incurring an annual loss of approximately $50 million.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.

The Demons return to the MCG this time as the visiting team where they get another opportunity to put a dent into a team's top 8 placing when they take on the Hawks on Saturday afternoon. Who comes in and who goes out?
