After this draft we'll have somewhere in the region of 18-22 players who will be 23 or under.

They will form the core of the side that should develop and grow into our next finals contender. On field growth is crucial this coming year and I think next year really is the year we should start attacking free agency.

I'd be surprised if we didn't throw our top draft picks at a trade next year (GWS should be vulnerable), plus a huge contract at a free agent.

That should balance it up a little.

At least our youth is looking a little more talented this time around (not assuming anything..).

What I find very interesting is that this trade/draft season we will have turned over 25% of our list with 10 players gone from the primary list.

The big problem for me is the lack of quality of our older players, compared with basically every other team. Jamar, Pedersen, Bail, M.Jones, even Cross to a degree, are fringe players at best. It's alright to say that we should have X players of a certain age, but they have to be able to play. N.Jones is the only top liner amongst our 27+ year olds.

I'm glad, Chaser. If we were relying on our Over 23's to the core to take us to finals I'd be very nervous.

I appreciate the term "top liner" is somewhat amorphous, but I think Lumumba and Vince would get a game in any team and should be classified as "top liners"

Quite revealing about why we have been so poor in the last few years.

Our hopeless drafting from 2001 to 2004 means that only Jamar and Dunn are players drafted then that still remain.

Our disastrous efforts from 2007 to 2011 means that we have only 11 players aged 22-26 that we drafted - that is a crucial 5 year age range for AFL clubs. The most promising 5 players of those 11 are McDonald, Jetta, Watts, Howe, and Grimes. Another 6 of that 11 may not be on the list for much longer: Trengove, Fitz, Gawn, McKenzie, Spencer, and Bail.

Prime years of a football career and we don't have many and we don't have much quality.

Gawn will be on the list for a while yet - but your point still stands.

More damning, is the number of high drafts picks in that period that aren't at the club anymore. Unprecedented.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
