WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN NEWTON

Sorry to upset you with the DL groupthink reference P-man, but we all have our barrows to push. I refer to "DL groupthink" on the occasions I reckon it exists and this is one of those occasions.

I do think that groupthink is common here and by my reference to it I'm trying to make people aware of it and challenge them to critically evaluate their position.

Yes but it's not always wrong. Grimes has had a terrible couple of years.

Reminds me of our old friend Rhino who spent thousands of posts telling all of Demonland how stupid they all are. He had to constantly assert his superiority.

Amusing that you are lecturing the poor plebs on the virtues of objectivity.

I know it's only highlights, but Newton does seem very willing to lay a tackle. Probably an attractive feature from the coach's viewpoint.

lay 'em....and stick them too !!

This is from Liam Pickering...now he is a manager and you can't always believe what comes from their mouths but...

Speaking on NAB AFL Trade Radio on Tuesday, Garlett’s manager Liam Pickering said he was confident a deal would be achieved.

"It’ll get done," he said.

Pickering said he had spoken with Carlton head of football operations Andrew McKay and Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney.

"We’ve agreed on terms of a contract, they (the clubs) just need to organise a trade," he said.

Pickering said Essendon had also expressed an interest in securing the out-of-favour Carlton forward.

"Essendon were in it as well, so there were two clubs that were pretty keen on Jeff," he said.

"'Roosy' (Melbourne coach Paul Roos) had been really adamant that he wants Jeff - (he) sees a role not just in the forward pocket (but) maybe more up the ground around the midfield with his speed.

"A fresh start for Jeff is going to be really important."

Okay, so Roos didn't say it.

He may spend some time in the midfield but he is here to help kick winning scores.

Well if you believe Pickering he did but it doesn't really matter. As we know Watts was going to play midfield last year according to Roos and within the first half of the first game he was forward again.

Anyway I will stick to where I came in and say Tyson is a gun and Newton will play the first game.

hehe..Tyson is a YOUNG gun, but he won't be a top 5 player in the league by the end of 2015. And if he is, I will claim you to be the guru of all gurus :)

As for Newton, I'd love for him to impress the coaches enough for him to start in Round 1, but he may be made to earn it which isn't a bad thing either. I do hope that Michie gets a decent crack at things next season minus any broken jaws. If given the opportunity I think he can solidify his spot, and hopefully Newton is the same.

Agree with you on Mitchie, he had the problem with the jaw which didn't help and then was made to learn his defensive game. He shows some poise and thinks his way through the game which is a plus.

I'd hoped you'd put me on ignore but no such luck.

I'm not lecturing Jabba, I'm challenging them to examine their conclusions. It's a distinction you either don't understand or are ignoring.

I don't really care which.

Newton is in exactly the same position as Michie and Riley last year in that he's a youngish mid who couldn't crack it for a game with his club. Most expected too much from Michie and Riley and I'm just expecting Newton to be a possible mid at this stage.

Yep, was pilloried for suggesting Mitchie at the start of last year wasn't a lock for our best 22. He had played 1 game. Managed 6 for us this year. Not unusual for people here to have inflated opinions of the talents of some new recruit.

Yes. His welcoming thread is full of people getting ahead of themselves - as is their right...

If someone disagrees with you it doesn't mean the opinion can automatically be dismissed as "groupthink" and doesn't mean they aren't being objective.

And just because you disagree with everyone doesn't automatically equate to you being the objective one.

If you consider this objectively you will see this.

Back: Jetta, Frost, Dunn

Half-back: Grimes, TMac, Lumumba

Mid: Vince, Viney ,Watts

Half-Forward: Kent, Dawes, Howe

Forward: JKH, Hogan, Garlett

Followers: Jamar, Jones, Tyson

I/C: Garland, Salem, Pedersen

Sub: Cross

Wouldn't have him in there just yet.

I'd have him ahead of Salem (at this point), Grimes and Howe.

I'd have him starting ahead of Salem maybe, although Salem is the better sub for sure. Grimes I can understand. But no way Howe.

And if you took out Howe AND Grimes then who the heck is playing half back. We haven't seen or heard anything that says Newton could do the job there.

True. I'd play Vince off half back though.

Right now I've got 18 starters:

Back: Jetta, Dunn, Garland

Half-back: Grimes, TMac, Howe

Mid: Vince, Tyson, Lumumba

Half-Forward: Viney, Dawes, Watts

Forward: Kent, Hogan, Garlett

Followers: Jamar, Cross, N.Jones

There has to be a 2nd ruck/fwd = Gawn, Pedersen or Fitzpatrick

That leaves 3 spots for mids (including the sub) and Newton has plenty of competition: Salem, Toumpas, McKenzie, Michie, JKH, Riley, Bail, M.Jones, Pick 2/3 and I could be missing someone ...

Frost doesn't squeeze in, yet.

Assuming we go into with two flanks and 2 bench players and 1 sub as those in the rotation then that gives Newton at least 10 opportunities to make the best 22.

N Jones, Tyson, Cross, Vince, and Viney will be the first picked. After that Michie, M Jones, JKH, Salem, Brayshaw, Riley, McKenzie, Bail, Toumpas, and Kent will be those in the mix for the other 5-7 spots.

I hope Grimes is added to this list; he was a junior centreman and is currently being pushed out of the backline from Howe's form and Lumumba's and Frost's arrival.

Newton would be a good show to be in that rotation but some thought that about Michie last year; a player still wanted by their contending club intending to find more time at a lower, midfield-deficient club.

There was talk of the sub going and heading back to 4 interchange for 2015. Has anyone heard anything on this?

With the inclusion of La La La Lumumba i reckon you'll see him and Grimes down back and Howey will move to the wing/forward line.

No co-captain Grimes and again who gives Jamar ruck relief?

I find it very hard to fit Grimes in- co captain or not.. Pedersen gets no love around here and I think he gets the ruck relief role.

Will be interesting to see how Fitzpatrick, Gawn and Pedersen are used and how long we hold on to an antiquated tap ruckman (Jamar) who offers next to nothing around the ground, and by which round we hand over the first ruck role to Gawn. I'm tipping either by form or injury Jamars out by round 10

I am more concerned about the Jamar ruck releif rather than including Grimes but if you use Gawn for this purpose, who would you omit of those named?

Will be hard having such a young and inexperienced forward line of Hogan, McCartin (should we draft) and Gawn, with Dawes being the only real experienced older head- for that reason, I have the fridge (Pedo) in until someone pushes him out. Salem or Toumpas makes way for the fridge on first glance but of course that comes down to our opponents line-up and team balance

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
