Some fantastic players in that lot

Id kill to have a Jeff White clone running around for us these days

I wonder where White would rank on a list of the greatest Demons

Free Agency had changed the dynamics of a players value.

Jones is head and shoulders above Frawley and look at the figures being spoken about with him.

Jones will have no doubt already had offers from other clubs already. Probably in the order of around $750k and 4-5 years.

FWIW I would match any offer in this vicinity and I also think that if we did he would stay. Obviously if he was offered 'way, way' overs by another club then that would complicate things.

Loyal city boy is our Nate :-)

As soon as they changed the centre square rule, his influence was pretty much entirely alleviated. I'd still take him back in a heartbeat though. Ten times the player Jamar has ever been, minus perhaps 2010.

Question for everyone. Given how some DLers reacted to Frawley putting off contract talks, how will you react if Jones hasn't signed by Round 1?

Posted

What a resounding response. :P

He is in contract negotiations now so all going well should be ok and as Demoneyes has said should be announced within 3-4 wks.

If he is not signed by r1 that would indicate IMO the the MFC aren't offering enough $ and or term or both.

That would pizz me off.

I wouldn't be annoyed at Jones though.

There happy now!!

Very. Thank you, DO. :)

I can see us offering a $600-700k contract. I suspect Roos will look to build a culture where blokes will take slightly less, in order to achieve slightly more. ie. the Geelong model.

If we show no improvement, I know for a fact he'll be seeking greener pastures. That doesn't mean he'll leave but he won't be signing a contract before preseason let alone before we've played a game next year. This will draw out but the onus is on the other players to create a side he can see at least competing while he's still playing.

If this is true, I'd like to read a few of the views from Demonlanders now. :P Those that had a go at Frawley and said that he was a follower and not a leader, and expected those around him to drag him up. With this line of thinking, what would opinions of Jones be?

For the record, this is the way football contracts will be played from now on. To borrow Mark Neeld's favourite phrase: "It is what it is". We need to get used to it.

If this is true then why would he be negotiating a new contract now as Demoneyes has suggested?

How could any Demonlanders begrudge Jones if he did.

He deserves success.

Hmmm, played golf again today with my mate and the dreaded word "stalemate" came up (in regards to $$$ and term). Don't like hearing that word. The positive thing is that we are in discussions with NJ, unlike Frawley last year. Still very confident he will sign before end of November.

I dont see this as a negative, he is talking to us with a deal that probably means he is a Dee for life. I hope the club realises that an extra year on the deal with all the salary inflation going on is nothing in the bigger scheme of things. As for the dollars we have to realise what the market is. Most so called stalemates have seen the player sign..

Not sure how I'll react by round one, as it really makes no difference from now til the end of next season, other than the media circus...

However if he does end up leaving as a free agent, I'll be [censored] furious. Not at Jones, he tries his guts out and never stops improving, he just deserves success and if it's another rubbish season who will blame him?

But I'll be furious at the club.

They should (could?) have been into Jones heavily as soon as they knew Frawley was out the door, which was blatantly obvious by the North game at the G, probably even earlier.

Roos himself has been most understanding and vocal about getting value for players who aren't going to re-sign before they become free agents.

So if Jones ends up leaving for nada and we didn't trade him for maximum return while we had the chance and saw all the writing on the wall, it'll be yet another monumental [censored] up.

But Jones will sign I think, and be an MFC legend.

I know there is no one player that is bigger than the club but I tell u now if we fart this up I will be absolutely furious.

We can not afford to lose him.

Get it done FFS.

Jonesy leaving would leave a scar on the joint bigger than when Junior was sacked. The MFC need to get this done.

Posted

He is also a RFA so we can match any offer if we like. Would think he would be gone if it got to that stage though. Can we do a clock ticking down to when he signs???

I find this thread pretty funny, when I recall how many on Demonland wanted Jones out a few years ago.

I can picture it now (as I wasn't around in those halcyon days):

We can't be a premiership team and expect to carry players like Jones.

To be a great club, we need to be RUTHLESS! If that means getting rid of players like Jones then so be it.

With Scully, Trengove, Gysberts and Morton coming through, there will be no room for the likes of Jones.

What other Demonland cliches did I miss out on?

Posted (edited)

They should be offering him a 6 year deal he cannot refuse. I think a return of 3 blueys on the trot should give them the confidence that he is worth the risk.

venom denham just said he wants a 5 year contract and a pay increase. Denham said melbourne have paid unders for Jones and he is on 1/2 what dawes is on and a 1/3 of what Mitch got. He said give him want he wants because he bleeds for that club. The way he was talking melbourne didnt jump at it.

Greg is right though, Give him what he wants, lock him away and it is done.

Repeat of my post (#98) earlier in this thread:

I'm staggered MFC is even debating this! We have plenty of cap room in 2015 so front end it!!

The average payment with a $10m cap is $250K. I could give payment patterns to show the cap is not an issue going forward. Suffice to say there will always be new low paid players to offset valuable high paid players and the cap will automatically go up over time.

On the contract 'term'. He will be 27 next Jan. 4+1 years takes him to 32 in his last year. So 5 years seems a very small risk to the club.

Jonesy will (rightly IMO) be mighty peeved if he has to accept high 500's so we can get a 'star FA' @ $1m for 5-7 years. I wouldn't blame Jonesy for walking away - Crikey he does all the hard yards just so some FA comes along and collects. No way Jose! If we think that Jonesy can't get more than the high 500's + 5 years somewhere else we are kidding ourselves. eg. GCS would take him in a heartbeat to support young midfield (Ablett will be 32 in 2016). Plenty of surfing up there!

Lets remember, if Jonesy walks next year and we get a 'star FA' there will be NO FA compo pick for Jonesy!! The FA's more than offset.

Pay what it takes to keep him, MFC and stop mucking him around!

Still think the same today.

We must be saving our money for our plethora of stars.. FFS Melbourne, you are a joke! Just get it done!

The fact that negotiations are going on are a positive. Jones wants to stay at MFC and I expect a deal to get done.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
