Given I have no confidence in the club selecting top 10 draft picks, I'd have to say Frawley.

He was the only player on our list capable of containing a Hawkins, Franklin or Roughead to an extent.

His absense down back will hurt us greatly.

He was... until we got Frost.

I think he'll slot straight in as a KPD who can stay with the mobile "gorillas"

I don't think Duggan has much chance of being anything more exceptional than a Jordan Russell type player.

I answer by saying at the beginning of 2014 we had Clark at FF and Frawley at FB. We've how got Lumumba and pick 3.

Tell me we're lucky. I'd take Frawley any day over pick 3. At some point we've got to get over the fetish of early picks and actually get blokes on the park that can play competitive AFL footy.

Losing Frawley and starting again shytes me.

He will be but I will reserve judgement on whether his exit was a good or bad thing for us till 2016 at least.

It's also very dependent on how the Frost trade works out.

Jayden Laverde, is absolute standout for me, just ticks all the boxes, of the modern big midfield , great mark too, and quick and tall and strong. Classic footballer. Laverde and Mccartin for me. If St Kiilda don't take Petracca, then he overrides all other considerations, then would take Petracca and Wright, assuming McCartin goes to saints.

I see Laverde as much more upside and growth potential compared to Brayshaw, who to me lacks the x factor.

Exactly what is it that makes frawley much better than average? His foot skills are not great, his creativity is poor, not a big intercept player, he doesn't look to break the lines. His strength lies in being strong, and spoiling. But so often in the modern game players receive delivery on explosive leads which can be unstoppable on a lot of occasions. So I see a key defenders role as minimising his opponents impact, and damaging him back the other way. At best Frawley will receive the ball , go back and kick long over his mark..... That's is 80's football. His work rate over the last two years offensively is embarrassing.

Also the fact that we are not going to be in any sort of a premiership window over the next 5 years leaves me very happy to cash in and bring in a player whose role can have greater impact on the performance than a full back (eg mid/fwd)

Also, as I said earlier, a key full back may be involved in defensive contests 10-15 times a game. At least 5 of those they will have no influence on, as pressure up the ground is the only thing that can stop a lace out pass. Plus offensively Frawley offered very very little that would damage an opposition as far as run or creativity from the def 50 in concerned. Without stats, so only opinion, I would guess Frawleys average involvement in scoring chains would be very low. A quality mid would have closer to 50 opportunities to influence a game, and for a bottum club like melbourne could have much greater impact.

Just my opinions, happy to be shot down, but I am more than happy to trade 26yr old frawley for 18yr old mccartin or brayshaw.

I both agree and disagree.

I agree that Frawley is a very good player and there many posters here who cannot see it for some unfathomable reason. He's a very good lock down defender and he provides some very good rebound for a player of his type. He will do an excellent job at Hawthorn, probably even more than he has for us given the class that he'll have around him. I also think that, overall, we have done very poorly to get 3 and Lumumba for Clark and Frawley, based on where we were 2 years ago.

The bit that I don't necessarily agree with is whether we would be better off with Frawley, based on where we are now. Frawley is an exceptional player, but the role he plays is not super important for us at the moment. Pick 3 may give us more improvement than a mature shut down defender would. Our resources are probably better invested in positions that have more impact on games, such as running players or key forwards. I think that this is especially the case now that more number are getting back to help in defence, rendering the shut down tall defender a luxury when you get to the top of the tree rather than a key plank that helps you rise from the depths.

That said, I would have preferred to turn pick 3 into a mature player.

Wright (not competitive enough)

McCartin (dunno, the diabetes thing maybe an issue)

Lever (already done knee, risky proposition)

I think Frawley can be a great player, just not at our club, and pick 3 gives us the ability to work on rebuilding the midfield, where we need to inject talent.

Paul Roos proved that our backline can function just fine without Frawley, as good as he is.

There will undoubtedly be busts, there are every year. And it may even be a draft that doesn't produce any outright superstars. But it sounds like you're being different for the sake of being different!

I think Frawley is a good player but IMO the deal can work out for both sides. He will be good in the Hawks side but he is not a leader like we need and I don't think he would have improved on what we have seen at Melbourne.

We have been given the opportunity to make the most of a good deal it's up to us now to get it right
