This is a huge factor. People talking about his one game. This was not against even the best players of his own age group. Not against picking him if the recruiters who have much more detail on him think he is the right pick. But don't get to carried away on how good he looks from one game against junior opposition. I also can't think of a single top 3 pick from the NT. Or even a top 10 pick. There have been some terrific players from the NT but they are coming from along way back in elite development.

It's all fun and games being a recruiter. In that one game Cockatoo treats his opposition with contempt, out-muscling them and out running them, he clearly had physical dominance over them. So a recruiter has to decide how much of that was due to the age difference and how much of that will transfer to AFL level in time. It's why anyone who says we must take this player or that player can't be taken seriously. There are so many factors to consider when selecting these kids.

Unlike RPFC though I don't necessarily see the inexact science of recruiting of 18 year olds as a massive problem The intrigue of it all adds something to the game for me. Clubs have shown that if you recruit and develop well you can rise quickly. We just haven't done it well in recent times. We can whinge about the system or get better at it. A lot of people wil beg to differ with me, but the team who makes the recruiting decisions make or break the club. Bailey and Neeld as coaches never stood a chance.

If you were ordering a player purely on a MFC needs basis then Cockatoo is the type. Line breaking mid who uses pace and strength to clear the contest is what we lack. That said we still take best available.

I would do both.

The AFL is constantly trying to improve the game, if they spent half as much energy improving the recruitment and contract infrastructure they would the game immeasurably by having more even teams.

I think we can agree to disagree even though I see some merits in raising the draft age by a year and spending an extra year in the TAC.

We are the poster boy for being a poor club that recruits poorly, and there are others like Port Adelaide have shown what can be done. I don't think raising the draft age is necessarily going to assist equalisation.

The bottom clubs get the highest picks and raising the draft age will allow clubs to have a better idea of the talent they are selecting.

The bottom teams get better players than those above them, and then are able to compete.

And evenness of the teams is a bit different to the equalisation argument. Although it is linked.

I was more pointing out that the number of blow outs affects the entertainment value of the game and having a greater spread of talent will of course help that.

I'd avoid Indigenous players from remote backgrounds. Or even those with heavy ties to remote backgrounds. Maybe even anyone from Alice Springs.

Josh Simpson, Zephi Skinner, Jurrah, Wona now Barry. For those with homes and hearts in communities it's a lot to leave behind.

If Cockatoo is from down town Darwin just like Matty Whelan and Davey or from Bunbury in WA like Jetta then I don't think his go home risk is that significant.

There's no AFL team that plays in Darwin.........
