Whilst I generally agree with your post here, mate, I'm concerned that our midfield is still alarmingly weak. If we have to draft two kids, no matter how good they may be, they'll essentially be thrown to the wolves again, given our lack of depth in the middle. We really do need that A grade star to come in and take the pressure off young kids coming through. Hi Patrick. (Yes, seeming very unlikely)

Not disagreeing with you but where do we get these A grade stars from......Dangerfield will not come to us...Who else?.....Shiel?(wont move) I cant see anyone, who would fit this bill wanting to move or wanting to come to us

Where do we get these super star midfielders from??????

Agree, pick 2 for a talented kid, pick 3 for one ready made talented AFL player eg. Shiel.

But at the moment it appears no one wants to give up that player or that player doesn't want to come to us, So picks 2 and 3 will need to be taken to draft.

Yeah, agreed, but I hope it doesn't come to that. I'd much prefer to see Shiel or Dangerfield (or both!) in Melbourne colours. ;)

It is weak but improving and as I said unless you are going to get one of those players I put in there I would go to the draft, you can still get kids ready to go and just need to manage them correctly. Lets not also forget Roos will be working on having a list of players who can rotate through the midfield so next year you will see Jones, Vince, Tyson, Viney, Cross, Trengove, Toumpas, Salem, Michie, Bail, Riley all with the ability to rotate through.

Whilst not star studded I think natural progression will see improvement along with Picks 2 & 3 getting some game time (or who we may trade in for those picks) and Pick 23.

I think trading in the wrong players may increase our wins next season but could have a long term effect of stepping backwards in 2017

I agree. I think we'll see some improvement. That is natural. I also concur with your final line. It's a tricky one, because obviously I'd rather set our list for long term success, rather than short term, mid table success.

I know. It's easier said than done. But I can't imagine Roos would have said it's Shiel/Treloar or Dangerfield, otherwise we take the picks to the draft. His track record indicates he'll have a number of plans up his sleeve and these plans may surface in unlikely places. It's not answering your question, but if I knew, I'd probably be apart of the MFC recruiting team.

Not much is being said about Mitchell or Christensen.

It was originally stated that Carlton were after Mitchell , but nothing since.

Mahoney said we wouldn't be doing our job if we didn't talk to Christensen's manager .

Either could be a smokey for us, but I'd also be surprised if Frost was the only GWS player we are talking to,so Shiel or Treloar might also be a chance.

I still get the feeling if we don't get Danger that one of these guys might come to us,mainly because we know that Roos really really wants another experienced mid.

too soon to right off these young up n comers.

Danger has apparently just returned?

Monday it would say it will hot up for us I think we've been waiting patiently Re Danger, & if there is any truth he was out of contact? then things may change over the weekend?

Just see that the Patfull to GWS trade might get done giving the Lions 21 for Allen Christensen from the Cats.

Would it be fair to ask Geelong for that pick for Clark?

It was mentioned on fox sports news last night that Cameron was spotted in Adelaide yesterday. Cameron denied it saying he was playing golf in Sydney. Did anyone else hear this rumour?

We could get in on this with a three way trade

Adelaide ins: Cameron Outs: Dangerfield

GWS ins: Pick 2 and 23. Outs: Cameron

Melbourne ins: Dangerfield. Outs: Pick 2 and 23

I don't believe bucks went to Bali just to talk to Varcoe??? he must be chasing another over there. who is outa contract & in Bali Indo?

Schapelle. A tough hard mid.

I wonder if we could work out a deal that saw us target Devon Smith from the Giants, i rate him quite highly and seems like the sort of player who would be less of a priority for them to retain than Shiel and Treloar, float some dollars under his nose and see if we can work a deal out

It was refuted straight away by Cameron himself and the Giants. He's training here in Sydney and I haven't heard anything so far that suggests he's going anywhere.

Neil Balme has said they would take pick 21 for Christensen, why don't we try and get pick 21 for Clark from Geelong?

Bulldogs fans reckon they'll get pick 4 and Jeremy Cameron in exchange for Griffen.

Yep, agreed. Brisbane's second rounder to Geelong for Christensen, and pick 21 to us for Clark.

Then just like we are asking for 21 from Cats for Clark, Pirs will ask for that for Lamumba. [censored] Lamumba, I'd rather go 21 for a player like Gore and go 22 on Greenwood. Lamumba can be a straight three way for Varcoe.

Fair enough, keep us updated if you hear anything.

Not much of a difference between pick 21 and 23, i don't mind what one we trade.

Pick 4 is more than enough for Griffen.

one wonders why the beams trade is holding up the HL swap, after all collingwood does not want HL and they want Varco regardless of whether beams is there or not. So what is the problem with those damn birds cannt they multi-task.

Varcoe was talking to Buckley and one or both of them is in Bali.

I think it is more to do with what we want for Clark and that will be tied into what Brisbane can give for Christiansen. I very much doubt we are doing a straight 3 way swap as has been predicted. Clark is worth a lot more than that.

edit; sorry posted this before I read about the pick 21 thing but it seemed logical.

I don't share the expectation that we will land a high quality midfielder each year at trade time. We got lucky last year with Tyson, but young, high quality mids don't move around that often and when they do, are we realistically any more likely than any of the other clubs to land them?

If we can somehow lure and make a deal work that lands a high quality player once every few years or so, I think that is all we can hope to expect. I am sure we have plenty of cracks at quality players, but very few of those inquiries will result in a completed trade.

The rest of the time, we need to improve the list small increments at a time via deals such as we completed for Garlett or by making the most of what we have left at draft time.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
