Raines and Lions to part company

Raines isnt an earth shatteringly brilliant player. But he'd probably eclipse a fair few of ours.

He'd have a few seasons left and hes fairly consistent.

If gotten cheaply he might be another Dads Army type to bolster and guide the kids in the middle?

just thinking out loud really

No love ??

Thought it might be of interest.. A tagger , who can run , who can KICK

I do like players that can kick and hit up leads.

ah well..again....just a though

No way we have enough on the list who can't kick or handball properly

We don't need to add to it further.

Fair enough to many comments , but he CAN kick...and his handballing would shade many at the Dees currently.

If this is the case which when I have seen him play he kicks like a demon why are Bris getting rid of him?

I thought Raines was meant to be a bit of a hook foot?

not familiar with that aspect of his game..Maybe he is :)

watching some of his reels he seems ok by foot.

I know...just ribbing OD :) but that aspect alone isnt necessarily a choice killer. other aspects maybe..lol

It's a no from me as well although I can see the reasoning behind it.

I think we need to be careful with who we select in terms of experienced players at the latter stage of their career. Getting an O'Keefe, for example, would see us take someone who is a different player from Cross and who also plays a completely different role (half forward, where we struggle). There isn't anything that really sets Raines apart from our list outside of his experience and, like I say, I don't think that's enough to warrant us getting him. Decent tagger but doesn't bring a whole lot else to the table IMO.

Thanks Wiseblood.. :)

My thoughts centered around the notion that Jordie is desperately lacking in most things other than being able to negate players. That , hes ok, indeed quite good at. Checks and balances tip against him for mine.

Raines by all accounts is a good trainer and has seemingly the qualities and history of showing kids what to do etc. I simply thought another older wiser head who CAN tag, who isnt a butcher with the ball and knows how to get his hands on the pill might be worth more than a cursory glance. Some of our kids wont really come on for another year or so and he might be a filip.

other than that...happy to move along :)

But you'd happily trade Watts.

Dead set, this is like watching a session of housie at the local CWA.

The relative costs and advantages etc...yeah just ignore that Ron

The money Watts gets ( under false pretenses ) might go towards a REAL player

We might get something useful in a trade for Watts instead of the wet sock he is. Raines might fill a role which is the mantra of Roos.

Thought you were a thinker Ron...mea culpa

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi
