Frees when we play WA Teams

A bit bored so was looking some free kick stats when we play in Perth.

At Subiaco

The last 7 games against Freo we have received118 Frees and given away 142

The last 5 games against WCE we have received 60 and given away 95

So in 12 games we have received 178 and given away 237

At the MCG and Etihad

The last 4 games against WCE we have received 67 and given away 72

The last 4 games against Freo was have received 54 and given away 59

IN 8 games we have received 121 and given away 131.

That is one massive home ground advantage the WA teams have and should be the basis for a complaint to AFL house.

Anything to do with getting to the ball first perhaps ?

Its a good discussion Jnr Mac

It obviously wasn't (and I am not implying you're saying this) that we lost the game becuase of the frees - but it really annoyed me that so many soft free kicks were paid. real soft incedential stuff, then the Dees lay a good tackle the ball spills out (no legal possession) and no free....

The AFL will say they pay free kicks what the umpire sees... blah blah blah

I am not sure 100% sure what other games have been like but the inconistent interpritaton really annoys me...

Apologies I didn't really add to your discussion Jnr, i needed to get that off my chest.... their [censored] weak free kicks really kick a struggling team in the guts - it's equivalent to kicking a bloke when he's down IMO

They're free kicks based on supporter noise and the umpires are being influenced by that, simple.

The noise of the dominant Dockers/Eagles crowds over here make something that shouldn't be a free kick a very soft free kick.

I guess I was drawing a conclusion as to when we play them in Melbourne the frees are much more even as you would expect over time. In WA its vastly different and getting worse. There is a definite home crowd advantage. I can't be bothered looking at the Swans, Adelaide etc but it seems every time we go to Perth we get well and truly rogered.

I remember a couple of years ago the frees were 23 to 2 at half time against us. The most disgraceful performance I have ever seen.

Not the first time it's happened at Subi and it will continue. Not the reason we lost but 3 frees we should have had for trips, a tackle Josh Hill laid inside 50 dropped down to Jones legs and he ended up being tripped, they scored a goal directly from it, Mckenzie manhandled Dawes in the forward pocket about 12 meters from goal no free paid and they rebounded straight up the other end in what was a 12 point turn around.

Wouldn't have changed the result but it certainly needs to be looked at

jnrmac - the free kick count is the least of MFC's problems.

Yep But I didn't say it was.

But it doesn't help.

Nor does the fact we get the cra p umpires every week because we are a bottom club and we aren't on the TV

God help us if we ever get 'Razor Ray' (small man syndrome if ever there was one)

That was last year "the day of the duck" West Coast dropped their knees in every tackle and the umpires paid a high free every single time.

This helped WC to the 8 goal first quarter in that game, free count of 20 plus to 2 at half time.

AFL changed interpretation after other clubs screamed about it

I don't think it was crowd influence, they were very quiet on Saturday night at the ground, just crap umpiring.

Also enjoyed watching that Eagles player run all the way from HF flank across the top of the centre square (about 30 meters) without bouncing the ball.....with the umpire running alongside him.

My theory is the percieved "low value" games get the less experience "L" plate umpires

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
