Steven Motlop

I noticed the Gaz Man this morning in the Age was suggesting that if Geelong make a play at Chip (as is rumored) then we should make a play at Motlop as some kind of 'revenge' signing. He did make a good point in that Geelong consistently pay unders for a lot of players to keep the collective together and if we present a good deal to him, we might be a chance.

It would be a turn up for the books to see us doing something as provocative as that. Not sure if we should be signing and trading on that basis but it would be amusing for a bit to see us actually swing back at clubs who we have been told in years past that we can 'learn so much from' (i.e. take it in the rear from).

What likelihood do my fellow 'Landers think this is of coming to fruition?

I think motlop is good because those around him are, wouldn't look nearly as good in our side

and I don't like the idea of recruiting a player for revenge unless it's Jeremy Cameron

The best revenge would be a huge rise in 2015 and Geelong falling away

I also realize the last time we listened to the Gazza on personnel acquisition... well, we all know what happened! Perhaps he might want to leave the role of Jim Cardwell to someone else!

Ask Collingwood and Richmond how that works. It just about (well it did really) sent them both broke and the Tiges are still recovering. It was kinda their Norm Smith moment.

Likelihood is absolutely zero.

"People say, 'Why would he leave Geelong to come to Melbourne?' Well, he wouldn't. But it might just cause them a little bit of pain because right now they are making life very difficult for Melbourne and James Frawley," Lyon said on Triple M."

It seemed to me that Garry just plucked a name out of the hat.

"Demons great Garry Lyon says his former club needs to respond aggressively to the Cats, who have approached impending unrestricted free agent James Frawley, and used Motlop as an example of the way the club can hit back."

That was the laziest piece of writing I've seen for some time. Smacks of someone to had to submit something to meet a deadline. Meaningless drivel. Couldn't even be bothered to find out Motlops contract status. He just plucked a name out of his9

"Motlop, one of the AFL's most exciting players and crucial to the Cats' premiership hopes, is contracted until the end of 2015."

You guys actually bother to read the article before forming your well founded opinions? Hope you appreciate the irony of blasting someones research when you haven't even read what you're commenting on. FMD.

Agree. Thank christ Lyon has no involvement in our club.

Revenge trading is one of the most stupid things a club could do.

I know Motlop was used as an example and while he is a beautiful player, paying him 700K is irresponsible.

HE finishes a lot of good work at Geelong but would look terrible at MFC.

Fcuk you guys like to smash G Lyon.

The article was presented as an example.

You lot are the lazy ones.

We are the lazy ones ? Its a crap piece of journalism with no research done at all - Motlop was a poor example. Tell me exactly how we would get Motlop (as an example) to the MFC. Number one he is contracted and number two if he was out of contract this year he wouldn't be a free agent. So the only way we could guarantee Motlop coming to us is if Geelong traded with us - sweet revenge - not.

Had he done his research - there is only three real ways to get revenge trading. Finish bottom of the ladder and persuade a player becoming uncontracted to not re-sign and go into the PSD. Grab an unrestricted free agent ( Corey Enright is the only unrestricted at Geelong). You can also offer player coming out of contract but not a free agent a gazillion dollars to come to your club but you have to hope for one of three things - that the opposition club will say - we ain't paying that and then deal with us fairly - or the player goes into the PSD and you hope every other club below you won't pay the hefty price you are offering - or they decide to keep the player and thus you have inflated his price.

He deserved a whack for lazy journalism. The thrust of the article was get nasty in your trading - at least get a plausible revenge scenario.

It wasn't that I hadn't read the article - it is I am gobsmacked by the lack of research ( or lack of thought) he gave with his choice of example.

It just seemed that he was just appealing to Gazza's perceived authority. No leaks, no research, just 'Gazza said it so it must have credence'.

Steve Motlop is the type of player we have a big need for. JKH may fill the spot, but he would have to be good to be on par with Motlop.

Chase him or someone like him because we need to, not for revenge though.

agree...this ought to be just what we keep doing....trying to entice good ( really good ) players top the club on a continual basis

We are well placed to cherry pick more players from GWS and Gold Coast of similar calibre to Tyson I reckon. We have Roos and Co, a young list and the go home factor in our favour as well as showing that we are willing to trade.

There will be other teams we look at of course but those two will struggle to accommodate all their early picks and GWS in particular seem to want to continuing getting their hands on early picks.

Would be interesting to compare Motlop's first season with this one by JKH. Think we have a good one there.

Haha was about to write something similar - running short of ideas for copy with only 4 games on the weekend? Seriously don't understand how some of these guys get paid for speculative drivel. Here's an idea - analysis! Original but may just work.

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form
