You gotta admit this is a super strange move, well it's not really if Malceski doesn't care about winning another flag and wants to cash up before his career finishes. Bizarre turn of events.

I've always loved him as a player, but this makes me question his motives. Very odd.

I'm assuming that Gold Coast still have a bigger salary cap than other clubs? If so, first casualty of Sydney losing COLA.

That being said, I think there's every chance GC will be in flag contention towards the end of his contract

Hmmmm Sydney vs GC.

I know who I've got money on to win a flag in the next 3 years.

GC haven't even made finals yet.

Yes, indeed Sydney are better placed for immediate success, but this is a guy who already has already played in a flag - Maybe (likely) there was a significant gulf in the money being offered? Also IIRC Sydney weren't keen on offering three years, so this gives him a bit more security in case his body breaks down again.

not to mention paying 2 players 25% of their cap at the expense of other loyal servants (-1 now)

Sydney premiership star Nick Malceski has quit the Swans to join the Gold Coast Suns on a three-year deal.

The All-Australian, who was one of the Swans' few good players in the grand final loss to Hawthorn, told coach John Longmire on Monday afternoon he had decided to accept an offer from the Suns believed to be worth about $1.5million over the three years

Big investment if true. Not many rebounding defenders (let alone 30-year old ones) would be on that sort of money

Deal is done with GC. A shame as I thought Roos might get him across somehow.

I reckon we would've baulked at that price tag. Dodgy knees, already 30... quality player but that's a huge risk.

Not as dumb as the Higgins 400k/4 years deal though.

I'm happy for him and the Suns. Disappointed that in the current footy climate we'll see less and less one club greats like Schwartz and Neitz but as it stands, it's a good decision for him and Gold Coast.

Not really before Ablett went down they were looking certainties for Finals and Top 6. The AFL will pay for a good quality coach and bankroll an increase in the footy department. Sydney were only prepared to give him 2. If the Suns keep tracking the way the scribes believe they are headed then he may be there for a flag tilt in 3 years

We have Cross, we're getting Lumumba, and we don't want to jeopardise our Frawley compensation pick. No reason to have gone after him at all.

I think we determined a cheaper, safer option very early on. That option is obviously the younger and less injury prone Lumumba. I'd say Gwilt is also a chance in there somewhere too.

I was under the impression it was a gradual phaseout rather than an overnight thing. If anything Goodes should have retired.

I think it is starting to take effect. Mike Pyke mentioned in an interview recently that because of COLA going his contract took longer to negotiate.

His motive is cash, that's been apparent all along. And that is OK.

As to why we didn't go after him, I would think the "no free agents after trading a compo pick" rule would have played a big part. Given the sounds Roos has made about using early draft picks to their full currency on the trade table, I can't see him compromising pick 3 for any but the absolute best free agent.

To put it on to perspective: pretend this Dangerfield thing was real for a second. Taking Malceski would have caused out compo pick to be downgraded, thereby strongly weakening our bargaining with Adelaide; taking Malceski might have cost us Dangerfield. You can apply the same logic to any real deal that might be cooking in the background.

Not only is that OK, that is how Free Agency becomes an equalisation force in a salary cap regulated sport.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THE AFL GAVE SYDNEY A SECOND ROUND PICK FOR A 30-YEAR OLD BEARDED HOBO AND MADE US USE PICK 42 INSTEAD OF PICK 41 ON BILLY STRETCH!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
